Data driven local policy? 20.06.2023 1:51
The National Treasury and HSRC announced the SEAD-SA program yesterday. It stands for Spatial Economic Activity Data and uses tax records and administrative data to paint a more complete picture of where economic activity takes place. This is a good thing, but must be used with care. This episode is supported by Jenwil financial advisory service and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions a...
Foute en weglatings is my eie.
Light in the tunnel 19.06.2023 1:46
In South Africa, we don't have to worry too much that the light in the tunnel might be a train. That's why I want to start the week with a few rays of economic light shining through. This episode is supported by the Bureau of Economic Research in Stellenbosch and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.

Business confidence is low 15.06.2023 1:46

Sakevertroue is laag 15.06.2023 1:46
Foute en weglatings is my eie.
The problems of policy advice 14.06.2023 2:04
Last week, in their so-called Article IV report on their member countries, the International Monetary Fund spelt out the dangers facing the South African economy and made a number of policy proposals. The advice comes right out of the textbook but doesn't really help us now. This episode is supported by Economic Research Southern Africa and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my...
Groei of resessie in die eerste kwartaal? 06.06.2023 1:47
Foute en weglatings is my eie.
Growth or recession in Q1? 06.06.2023 1:49
Statistics South Africa will announce the first quarter's Gross Domestic Product and economic growth figures later this morning. The economy contracted in the last quarter of 2022, so another contraction will count as a recession. This episode is supported by Jenwil financial advisory service and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.
Last week's data 05.06.2023 2:04
Indicators from the month of May were announced last week. ABSA and the Bureau of Economic Research's Purchasing Managers' Index was slightly lower. Naamsa's vehicle sales statistics looked much better than in May last year. The shares of consumer-oriented companies suffered on the JSE. This episode is supported by the Bureau of Economic Research in Stellenbosch and the NWU Business Sc...
WAAR ekonomiese aktiwiteit plaasvind maak saak 02.06.2023 2:33
Foute en weglatings is my eie.
WHERE economic activity happens also matters 02.06.2023 2:30
The auditor general's presentation to a Parliamentary committee on the audit outcomes of local governments made headlines this week. The deterioration at the municipal level is obvious, but I want to briefly explain why it matters for the economy. This episode is supported by the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.
Foute en weglatings is my eie.
What we can learn from SA's 1980s debt crisis 01.06.2023 2:21
Yesterday someone asked me what a sudden stop of capital inflows would look like. Such events are rare and always different, but maybe South Africa’s experience in the 1980’s can give us some clues to the nature of such a crisis. This episode is supported by Predictive Insights and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.
Warning lights flashing in the FSR 31.05.2023 1:51
The Reserve Bank's Financial Stability Review is a document that does not get much attention from the public because most of the time they tell us it is going well. Yet, the report published this week has important warning lights flashing. This episode is supported by Economic Research Southern Africa and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.
The buck stops here 30.05.2023 1:45
In an interview last week, Minister of Finance Enogh Godongwana said what concerns keep him awake at night. I want to add a few more to the list. This episode is supported by Jenwil financial advisory service and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.
Ek wil nog so paar by die lys voeg. Foute en weglatings is my eie.
Foute en weglatings is my eie.
What happened with the rand last week 29.05.2023 2:21
Along with last week's repo rate decision, something unusual happened with the exchange rate. After the repo rate increased, the rand weakened. This is not what the textbook says and worth talking about a bit more. This episode is supported by the Bureau of Economic Research in Stellenbosch and the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.
Foute en weglatings is my eie.
What the MPC says 26.05.2023 2:05
The repo rate was increased by another 50 basis points yesterday. It now stands at 8.25%. If one wonders if this was necessary after inflation was a little lower in April, and the economy is barely growing, it is useful to read the Monetary Policy Committee's media statement. This episode is supported by the NWU Business School . Errors and omissions are my own.
