It is not the GNU, it is the carry trade 21.06.2024 1:57
The rand is stronger and the stock market is up and everyone is talking about how positive the markets are about the election result and the government of national unity, but here and there you find an economist who says, no, local politics is not as important a driver as what we think. So what is it that counts? This is known as the so-called "carry trade". This episode is supported by...
Inflation unchanged, but the chance of an interest cut looks better 20.06.2024 2:00
Statistics South Africa released May's consumer price inflation figure yesterday. It was unchanged from April at 5.3% after economists expected a slight increase. Month-on-month, the index figure rose by 0.2%. The good news is that food prices continue to rise more slowly. This episode is supported by the NWU Business School.
What is urgent and important economic policy for the GNU? 19.06.2024 2:02
The media is full of advice on what the government of national unity should do and different groups are calling for attention to be paid to their interests. Just think what one can do with that R940 million that the cabinet was costing us. This episode is supported by Economic Research Southern Africa and the NWU Business School.
Catching up with indicators 18.06.2024 2:00
A week is a long time in politics and ten days without the Economics Minute feels even longer. I thought I'd start with a brief summary of the indicators we missed. This episode is supported by the Bureau of Economic Research in Stellenbosch and the NWU Business School.

The MPC keeps their foot on the brake 31.05.2024 2:13
Imagine the South African economy is a fairly old bakkie and the Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee is occasionally behind the wheel. They want the bakkie to keep running, that's economic growth, but they're worried the engine is overheating, that's inflation. The repo rate is their foot on the brake. They left it unchanged at 8.25% yesterday, but what do they say about the p...
The exchange rate, the election, and the MPC 30.05.2024 2:04
Yesterday in line to vote someone asked me if the rand had started to fall yet. It is the case that sentiment, especially around an election, can play a role, but then I thought it might be interesting to talk about the factors that determine the exchange rate. It is not this week's changes in the rand-dollar rate, but the underlying, fundamental drivers of the exchange rate. This episode is s...
Hierdie episode wo...
How strong is the link between IQ and income? 29.05.2024 2:03
One hears people say that emotional intelligence is more important to your success than IQ. Exactly what determines people's income is something that economists are interested in and it is harder to determine than it sounds. This episode is supported by Economic Research Southern Africa and the NWU Business School.
29.05.2024 2:07
A last (economic) word before the election 28.05.2024 2:19
Much has been said about tomorrow's election. Our problems are economic in nature and how the various parties promise to solve them lies on a spectrum from the developmental state to the free market. This struggle is as old as our democracy and to put it in perspective it is worth reading an old research article by Nicoli Nattrass. The title is Gambling on investment: Competing economic strate...
'n Laaste (ekonomiese) woord voor die verkiesing 28.05.2024 2:23
Daar is al baie gesê oor more se verkiesing. Die titel is Gambling on investment: Competing econo...
Comments are nice, but clarity is better 27.05.2024 2:01
What central banks say is as important as what they do. In the past week, the rand has weakened based on comments from a member of the US Federal Reserve Board who said that interest rates in the US may remain high for a long time. Here in South Africa, analysts expect the Monetary Policy Committee to leave the repo rate unchanged but are ready to listen closely to the tone of the statement. Why d...
The election and economic policy 24.05.2024 2:13
With less than a week left before the general election, analysts and the markets seem to be very calm about the outcome. The result is more or less the ANC in coalition with smaller parties and reasonable stability or rather, more of the same. This is good and bad. This episode is supported by the NWU Business School. I received a NWU prize this week for media engagement and it is all thanks to Th...
A bit of good news about inflation 23.05.2024 1:48
There is a piece of good news in April's consumer price inflation figure that was announced yesterday. The year-on-year rate decreased from 5.6% in February and 5.3% in March to 5.2% in April. It may not sound like much, but the pressure on food prices is lower. This episode is supported by the NWU Business School.
'n Bietjie goeie nuus oor inflasie 23.05.2024 1:49
