Our son spent a good part of the weekend mowing the grass at our house and at the Center. We expanded the lawn area last year and some of that area still has some rocks that are hard to mow over. Many people have a certain tune that plays in their head whether they want to hear it or not. The same can be true with conversations. Although I do not hear either in my head, I do replay the feelings. Right now, I am experiencing “A Daisy a Day”. The other day my wife heard a clang from the ladders in the late afternoon. I grabbed my camera and just caught a picture of a yearly bear trying to find his own way. As I record this Message, the recent five inches of rain has washed out the road, making it necessary to take an hour’s detour for a drive that normally takes ten minutes. The first yellow day lilies are now open. They bring a smile to my face as I know I will be treated to a succession of different varieties of lilies all the way through the fall, each bloom lasting just one day. First, I saw a fresh footprint and then the game camera caught a photo of a young male deer, and I knew that one of my childhood favorites stories was alive and well, not only in my heart but on the mountain. We have black bears here that are a problem when it comes to leaving food, including bird feeders, or garbage where they can get their paws on it. We like to feed the birds, and our feeders are on the second level of the house, so I put out a defense of unstable ladders that tip when they try to climb up. We have a bridal wreath in full bloom that we transplanted from my parents’ home that had been brought there by my great aunt from her family homestead. It is from a different period. A good friend sent me a picture he recently took with the lupine in bloom and the mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop. We have domestic flowers in the flower gardens that last only one year and some flowers we have planted come back year after year. Then there are natural wildflowers that are spread by birds or the wind. I am reminded of acts of kindness that can take root and spread like wildflowers. CREATING A DESIGN. In my opinion Nature is the primary designer on the planet. My goal for the land is to design elements that help enhance what Nature has created. The small red flowers of the dianthus give me a pleasant greeting as I spend a little time with it in the Ormond Garden. It reminds me of how I feel when I receive a pleasant greeting from people I know or people I don’t. The flower also inspires me to greet others pleasantly. There is something special about seeing a bluebird. It wasn’t until my son built and put up bluebird houses that we first began to see them. There is a white snowball-like shrub at the Center called a viburnum that creates a vibrant energy before most of the other flowers have bloomed. There are vibrant people in life that have a beautiful vibrant positive energy that is connected to everything they do. I don’t know why birds decide to nest on the light by the Center’s door. They tried last year but gave up before laying eggs. I often wonder about the choices people make, including my own. Our purple iris is in bloom and for some reason I thought of a phrase, “I wish for iris.” Then I thought of the many things I have wished for in my life. Many I didn’t believe were possible, so my heart energy was not in tune with attracting what I was wishing for. The lupine are just beginning to bloom, and now is the time to take in their beauty, perhaps with photographs or paintings or songs or poems.  In a week or so the show will be over for this year. It is easy to miss the opportunities we have in life when something holds us back. Lilacs always seem to take longer to establish than other flowering shrubs. Finally, the one planted near the cabin several years ago has some beautiful white blooms this year. I knew that the season would soon be over, so I hurried up to the Orchard where several lady slippers were holding court in a corner close to the stone wall. Fortunately, I got there in time, and it reminded me of people who I only communicate with occasionally and how when we do connect, they have just been thinking of connecting with me. Waiting to mow the lawn until June provides us with several flower treats that we would have missed had the grass been cut earlier, like the fragrant lilies of the valley. The little crab apple tree on our lawn is totally covered with fragrant flowers. The fruit is tiny, and many people think the tree is worthless. On this Memorial Day in our country we remember all those that have served in the military to protect democracy. Nature has also paid tribute by creating a heart surrounded by beautiful blue forget-me-not flowers. A pair of swallows have taken up residence in the bird house at the top of the Lupine Field. It is fun to watch them dipping and diving as they sweep across the opening, collecting insects. It has taken a while for the ground phlox to spread into beautiful pink and blue flowers, but they creep a little more each year. Like the phlox it can take time to develop goals in life.
