The yellow leaves are still lingering on the tree while in other places the colors have faded. I enjoy the lingering color, but I think of negative habits people have that linger because they don’t want to or know how to change. As the daylight wanes and the sun slides westward the shadows grow longer. This fall ritual of Nature creates an interesting pattern of light versus dark on the mountains. People often think casting a shadow mean an omen of negativity. Now that the foliage season is winding down, the ground is covered with a crunchy carpet of leaves. The woods come alive with the sound of movement not heard during the summer. Each day my goal is to set my intentions to experience magical moments following my soul’s path. One such moment happens when I see the mountains across the valley. I noticed several oak tree tips on the ground. Something was attacking them. Almost every species in the woods has a type of pest trying to get nourishment from them, causing damage. A lot of people feel that they are living under some kind of attack. It is comforting to believe that something is watching over us. www.michaelhathaway.com   Support the show

From the top of the Mountain I can observe the valley below and the ridges and peaks. Looking north  I can look into the distance and see the large mountains known as the Great Whites. I can feel the cold breeze and yet I can only imagine what is like to be up there. It is good to have different views wherever we are in life. www.michaelhathaway.com   Support the show

I took another walk from the cabin over to the Lupine field to observe the fading colors of the fall foliage. I knew that soon we would be in what many consider the bleak portion of autumn, before the snow arrives. I am fascinated by how the sunlight or lack thereof plays on the mountainside. I am fortunate to observe lighting as pertains to photography, and that causes me to see movement at a slow pace. Recently I had the opportunity to watch volunteers from the Granite Back County Alliance and Timberland Outdoor Equipment Company from all over New England help in the annual fall cleanup of our backcountry ski trails. Many people come to the mountains to experience the splendor of the fall foliage. Yet, many miss the valuable benefit of taking time to be one with Nature. The first snow of the season covered the top of Mount Washington, and, although there will be warm spells ahead, it is a warning that it won’t be long before the snow covers the foothills. Standing on top of the mountain, I can look down on the world below me which includes a small pond ringed by miniature houses. I am reminded of my grandmother’s tiny Christmas village with its cotton snow covered landscape. Lots of people will search for a four-leaf clover, considered to be a symbol of good luck. Is luck random, or is it more than that? Lori has been spreading much of the big load of woodchips over landscaping fabric and defining the edges of the paths in the gardens at the Center. Her efforts will help keep the weeds down next summer, allowing visitors to focus on the beauty of the flowers. The barrel planter in Barbara’s Garden is filled to the rim with beautiful annual flowers. They are living on borrowed time as there will be a killing frost in the near future. I intend to enjoy them while they are still blooming. A patch of wild blueberries in a corner of the Lupine Field is now dressed up in fall colors. I wonder how many people hike on by with their attention focused on the other leaves and miss the show right under their feet. Many people consider the first couple of weeks in October to be the best time of the year. The foliage is at its peak, and the weather is still relatively warm. We had been waiting and waiting for the leaves to color up, and it wasn’t until after a couple days of rain that, “presto change-o”, a magical change in the foliage took place. We have had a lot of rain recently from the northeaster that slowly made its way up the coast.  The water is flowing in the little brook that passes by our house and helps relieve the summer dry spell. People can go through dry spells in their lives when their creativity seems non-existent. Milton Erikson told one of his patients to go out and count the shades of green in grass. I imagine the patient must have had a very narrow view of life and saw green as only one shade. Lori put three beautiful well-rounded mums at the Center’s entrance where their silent beauty greets all. To get into their fall shape, they had had several prunings over the summer. I watched the succulent stonecrop grow all summer, and now it has finally turned red, brightening up the landscape. It is possible that people visiting could miss its beauty if they are preoccupied. I get great pleasure in finding things in Nature that brighten up the landscape, like the last of the bee balm flowers hanging on until a killing frost. This form of pleasure is what I call heart-based rather than ego-based.
