Understanding Pain

Health EN ↓ 8 episodes

Understanding Pain is an educational podcast that aims to explain pain more clearly and more honestly. Pain is common, but it is often poorly explained. People are frequently given reassurance without understanding, or information without context, leaving them confused about what their pain means. Hosted by Paul Flynn, a specialist physiotherapist with nearly 20 years of clinical experience, this podcast explores how pain works, why it sometimes behaves in unexpected ways, and why scans, diagnoses, and treatments don’t always provide clear answers. All information presented is purely factual

Episodes

Episode 8 - The Challenge of Tackling Chronic Pain - Part 2 21.04.2026

In this episode, we build on the previous discussion and focus on what can actually be done to manage chronic pain. We explore how sleep and pacing influence how pain is experienced, and how small, consistent changes can begin to shift how the system responds over time. We also look at how flare-ups are often misinterpreted, and how changing that understanding can alter behaviour and progression....

Episode 7 – The Challenge of Tackling Chronic Pain - Part 1 15.04.2026

In this episode, we begin to look at how persistent pain is actually managed. Not through one treatment or quick fix, but through a number of approaches that work together over time. We break down the core principles behind current guidance, and explain how they link back to everything we’ve discussed so far. Episode 6 – The Effect of the Healthcare Experience on Pain 06.04.2026

In this episode we explore what happens when people seek help, the information they receive, how it is explained, and how different clinicians, systems, and pathways can shape how pain is understood and managed. Drawing on current evidence, this episode highlights how communication, expectations, scan interpretation, and repeated treatment cycles can influence how pain behaves over time. This is n...

Episode 5 - Why Pain Persists for some (and not others). Part 2 25.03.2026

In this episode, we continue exploring why pain persists for some people but settles for others. We look at patterns seen in research across large populations — including socioeconomic circumstances, differences between men and women, and body weight — and how these are linked with higher rates of persistent pain. We also introduce a different type of influence: medical treatment itself, and why s...

Episode 4 - Why Pain Persists for some (and not others). Part 1 15.03.2026

Why does pain settle quickly for some people, but persist for others? In this episode we explore some of the factors that research suggests may influence whether pain becomes long-lasting. We look at how stress, life experiences, fear of injury, and the way we interpret pain can affect how sensitive the nervous system becomes over time. You’ll also hear how the body’s normal protective responses c...

Epsiode 3 - Why Does Pain Continue After Healing? 08.03.2026

For years, pain was explained only by damage. But what happens when pain continues after healing? In this episode, we explore the science behind persistent, or chronic pain, and the real physical changes in the nervous system that help explain why pain can carry on long after an injury has settled.

Episode 2 - Scans, Imaging, and Pain: What They Show — and What They Don’t 27.02.2026

Medical scans are powerful tools, but they are merely a picture, they are not pain detectors. In this episode, we explain what different scans are designed to show, why many “abnormalities” are common in pain-free people, and why context matters more than the images alone. You’ll learn when scans are helpful, when they are not, and we'll discuss the role of clinicians in guiding patients regar...

Episode 1 — What is Pain and how does it behave? 15.02.2026

What is pain, and what is it actually trying to tell us? In this first episode, we explore why pain exists and how it works as a protective response rather than a diagnosis. Using simple, everyday examples, we explain how the nervous system detects potential threat and how the brain decides when to produce pain. We look at what “normal pain” typically looks like, how it behaves during healing, and...
