The gale force winds over the last few days have been creating hazardous conditions for walking in the woods due to hanging limbs or whole trees ready to fall. It was a bleak day filled with sleet and snow. It was not a day to venture out. But then a beautiful male cardinal appeared - a bright spot that was a mood changer. There is an energy at the time of a full moon that has an effect on ocean tides, weather, people and animals. For centuries there have been stories and legends that relate to the full of the moon. Lately, I have been amazed to look out the windows and see turkeys roosting on lofty perches high above the snow. Some are resting and others are keeping watch for predators. Valentine’s Day is a special day in the year where everyone is given the opportunity to express love for others, nature, and for peace in the whole world. DOING OUR PART. We enjoy providing cracked corn for a flock of up to fifty wild turkeys that come by a couple of times a day. With the snow making it hard for them to find food, what we and our neighbors do makes a difference. The titmouse was sitting on the edge of the feeder gazing in the window. I smiled and wondered who was watching whom. Overnight another snowstorm blanketed the area with six inches of powder. The snow is really piling up, making it difficult to clear away. In life, our things and thoughts can pile up, and unless we clear them away from time to time, we get stuck. The winds have been really blowing across the mountains with an icy blast creating designs in the snow. The designs are an inspiration for creating works of art. My wife has a basket full of scrap material that would normally be thrown away, but she decided to design a scrap pattern and make a sample square. Living in snow country, it is important to have a good foundation under your vehicle that can be reliable in all kinds of weather. For us it is studded winter tires. Today is a day I have been waiting for all winter long. It is the day when the sun doesn’t set until 5 pm. Winter may be around for a while longer, but I am thinking about playing in the springtime. The outhouse that rests near the cabin was built for that purpose before we purchased the property but was never finished. We moved it to a better resting place and filled it with wood. I paused at the edge of the orchard on an overcast day and became aware that there was not a sound to be heard. I felt a connection to the great Cosmos. Finally, today is Groundhogs Day, halfway through astrological winter. Here in the mountains the ground is deep asleep. With the lack of snow this year I have been able to set a groove to follow driving up to the Orchard. With more snow the groove will disappear, and I will need to wait until spring. When we are in the groove of life, things flow until we get off track. The trick is to find it again. www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show

A couple of years ago we had a small wood end heater installed in our unfinished cabin to provide a little warmth and to heat some water in the spring and fall. The day can be clear or cloudy and, suddenly, an intense snow squall happens, creating a whiteout where it is impossible to see just a few feet ahead. It often lasts only a few minutes. The cold winter winds blowing over the mountains can create big snowdrifts on unsheltered trails. It can make for an interesting hike. There are people who drift along in life without direction. Ever since we became guardians of a very special piece of property, we have considered and developed a lot of its potential to make a difference in other peoples’ lives. The tall pine stands magnificently alone against the setting sun. It reminds me of people that stand tall and, often silently, alone in doing their good deeds.
