As many of you know, I am always on the lookout for hearts. To me they are signs of love. As I was watching the wild male turkeys outside my window, I noticed heart-shaped marks on top of their heads. I recently heard on the news that magnetic north is shifting twenty miles a year. That has an effect on compasses and GPS devices as they now read locations differently. The game camera captured a coyote walking in a straight line, and I thought of wild animals that move differently than dogs who move in a zig-zag fashion. People that walk a straight path in life may miss what is happening around them at the moment. We are currently living in a frozen world here in the foothills, with temperatures running below zero in the mornings. The little brook has frozen over. I think of people who feel frozen in life when they can’t seem to take a step forward. Nature has many different textures, like the bark on birch trees. I compare Nature to life and consider all the different textures that I experience every day through all my senses. One of our game cameras captured four deer out for a stroll after the fall hunting season. Our land is actually an animal safety zone, and I hope the deer know it. People are on a stroll through life and those that know rely on the sources that go with them to guide them safely. www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show

With a snowstorm coming overnight, we decided to take one more walk before it arrived. We checked the trail cameras and the cabin and retreated home. The bench at the top of the Lupine field was silently waiting patiently for hikers to pause for a rest. It was a little cold for me on that winter afternoon as I knew spring would eventually arrive. We are now halfway through meteorological winter, a very important point for me, as I watch the daylight grow day by day. In mid-January I do not expect to be able to drive up to the Cabin, but this year I was able to easily get there due to lack of snow. Of course, my truck has four-wheel drive and studded snow tires. A light dusting of snow has covered the foothills with a fresh white surface that is not enough to help skiing yet can cover up slippery spots that make walking hazardous. I am reminded of gifted people who do not recognize that their abilities can make a difference for others. TIME TO TAKE A HIKE – Many people take a hike in Nature to escape the stresses of life. It is a great way to see things differently and get a different outlook on a situation. “Take a hike” is also a reminder to walk away from confrontations that could produce negative outcomes. www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show

The turkeys have created a quilt design in the snow with their tracks. When the snow is fresh, we can keep track of them. It seems as though it is easy to lose track of our lives when we are lost in our minds. There is a cold wind whistling by my window as I record this podcast. It is a day to prepare for any adventures outside. As I gaze out at the nearly bare mountainside, it has the look of spring, but I know it is only mid-January, and Winter still has plenty of snow in it. I stood on the shore of the lake looking across the frozen water to the mountain on the other side on a cold winter day. Actually, I was on top of the mountain and the lake was the snow-covered ground in the orchard. Our lives are filled with illusions. Every day since the winter solstice, the sunsets have been moving northward, and the daylight is now over ten minutes longer. We are also moving on from 2024 with new goals for 2025. Nature is in tune with all of mankind. www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show

I am always on the lookout for signs of Nature such as a heart shaped rock. I see positive words and acts of kindness from others that result in feelings of gratitude and often change a negative mood into a positive one. It was time to erect a new sign at the Center to go with the freshly painted building and the growing Ormond Gardens, and it was designed by my wife and put in place by two of our female members. If all the rain we have had recently been snow, we would now have at least a couple of feet on the ground here in the mountains. Instead, the backcountry ski trails at the Center need more snow. Life is often measured in a matter of inches, and the reality is to make the most of it the way it is. www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show
