New Trends and GF Finds in Natural Products 11.03.2019

Natural Products Expo West 2019 wrapped up in Anaheim, CA. last week. This annual trade show features natural, organic, speciality and functional products from over 3500 companies. Baltimore will play host to Expo East in 2019. Trends spotted in products were lower sugar, higher (healthy) fat, plant based products and use of oats. On my list of products to find and try are Brazi Bites new line of...

We have to represent the GF Community, not Gwyneth 08.03.2019

There was an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow published yesterday in the New York Times. In it, she deemed herself responsible for the gluten free market being as large as it is now. She tied it to one of her products, a gluten free cookbook, released in 2015. Besides the fallacy of her claim, why spend time even talking about this crazy statement? Because it’s hurts those who are gluten free for me...

Dental Issues and Celiac 07.03.2019

Studies have connected dental enamel defects and Celiac Disease. Now, another study adds to that body of data: a study out of the University of Salerno found that recurrent mouth sores, dental enamel disorders and non specific tooth were higher in the celiac patients then non-celiac patients. Dentists are in a good position to flag those with Celiac. You can read the full study here: https://www.n...

Recreating Food Memories 06.03.2019

Food and memories are tightly intertwined. It's often around holidays and celebrations that we can miss those family traditions the most. One of my favorite resources for recreating special dishes is from Jules Shepard aka GF Jules . Her recipes include traditional foods like King Cake, Beignets, Irish Soda Bread, Pierogi and Holiday Cookies to name a few. She has worked hard to perfect her recipe...

Samra Blanchard, MD Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity 05.03.2019

Happy Fat Tuesday! I hope everyone enjoys a gluten free treat on this day traditionally celebrated with fatty, rich foods. The Red Bandana Bakery near me in Bethesda, MD is selling gluten free King Cake - a traditional Mardi Gras dessert. Any bakeries near you doing something special? In the first part of my recap of the Celiac Project Screening Q and A with Samra Blanchard, MD in February, I want...

This was a voluntary recall issued by Nature's Path due to an error in production scheduling and possible air contamination. Money Saving Disney Tips 01.03.2019

My family has been lucky enough to visit  Walt Disney World  almost annually for the past 10 years. Why so often? Not only is it so much fun (for all ages) but it’s a true vacation for my gluten free family. We don’t worry about buying food for meals, preparing meals, researching places to eat (other than to decide what suits our preferences). Disney has dietary restrictions down to a sc...

Fun Events: March and April 27.02.2019

Mark your calendars, there are two great events quickly approaching! The first is the Annual Celiac Education Day put on by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Center for Celiac Disease on March 31st. This family event is free but registration is limited to the child with celiac disease and a caregiver. More info here via  Gluten Free Philly :  http://www.glutenfreephilly.com/2019/...

Annual Celiac Tests 26.02.2019

This weekend, our Baltimore Gluten Free Meet Up group screened the Celiac Project film . After, we held a Q and A with Samra Blanchard, MD from the University of Maryland Celiac Center. One question that came up had an answer that surprised many. It was: After a Celiac Diagnosis, how often should I have a Celiac appointment? Answer: After diagnosis, it’s important to be checked annually . The...

Modern Bread and Bagel in NYC 25.02.2019

Modern Bread and Bagel just opened on the Upper West side of Manhattan this past week. In addition to bagels and house-made spreads and cheeses, this gluten free and kosher bakery serves breads, cinnamon buns, babka, pop tarts, donuts and more! Check out their website for their other delicious brunch items which is served from 7 am - 4 pm. In the next few weeks, a Mediterranean restaurant named Ar...

Facebook Fallacy Friday - McD's French Fries 22.02.2019

McDonald's French Fries are NOT gluten free in the US. This is a fallacy that seems to rear it's ugly head frequently in Facebook groups. One of the fries' 19 (!) ingredients is Natural Beef Flavor, made from wheat. Not only that, McDonald's announced the fries are fried in the same fryer as their new donut sticks. I would love to hear from you! Leave your messages for Andrea at contact@baltimoreg...

The Celiac Project 21.02.2019

Everyone with gluten sensitivity or Celiac Disease has a story. Unfortunately, it's usual a long one typically with lots of bouncing from specialist to specialist and mis-diagnosis. As a celiac patient not diagnosed until age 40, Michael Frolichstein was compelled to capture stories from celiac patients all over the country. He spotlights them in the film: The Celiac Project , along with info from...

Oat Flour in Gluten Free Products 20.02.2019

Oat flour seems to be showing up in more gluten free products then ever. But even if a package is labeled gluten free, we have to dig further to determine the source of the oats used in the flour. Jules Shepard (aka GF Jules ) has the perfect example. Kellogg's has come out with an Eggo Waffle labeled Gluten Free on the box. However, the oats in the ingredient label don't mention gluten free oats....

Gluten Free Watchdog 18.02.2019

One of my favorite resources is Gluten Free Watchdog. Started by Dietician Tricia Thompson in 2011 as an independent testing organization. In addition to detailed product reports, Gluten Free Watchdog is a tireless advocate for the gluten free community. They accept no ads or sponsorships, the consumer is their one and only priority. I would love to hear from you! Leave your messages for Andrea at...

Quinn Snacks just released to market Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate filled pretzels, sold exclusively at  Whole Foods Market .
