As I gaze out at the nearly bare mountainside, it has the look of spring, but I know it is only mid-January, and Winter still has plenty of snow in it. I stood on the shore of the lake looking across the frozen water to the mountain on the other side on a cold winter day. Actually, I was on top of the mountain and the lake was the snow-covered ground in the orchard. Our lives are filled with illusions. Every day since the winter solstice, the sunsets have been moving northward, and the daylight is now over ten minutes longer. We are also moving on from 2024 with new goals for 2025. Nature is in tune with all of mankind. www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show

I am always on the lookout for signs of Nature such as a heart shaped rock. I see positive words and acts of kindness from others that result in feelings of gratitude and often change a negative mood into a positive one. It was time to erect a new sign at the Center to go with the freshly painted building and the growing Ormond Gardens, and it was designed by my wife and put in place by two of our female members. If all the rain we have had recently been snow, we would now have at least a couple of feet on the ground here in the mountains. Instead, the backcountry ski trails at the Center need more snow. Life is often measured in a matter of inches, and the reality is to make the most of it the way it is. www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show

So far, this has been an up and down winter. Just when we begin to establish a snow pack, the weather turns warm and much of it melts. This has been at least the fourth time we have started over again. Our flock of thirty wild turkeys seems to have taken up residence between our place and the neighbor’s. They come by several times daily and often take naps after they have eaten. In the summer, it is only a five-minute drive to the Cabin on top of the Mountain. It is so near and yet, with the winter snow, it is far away as I do not hike well on uneven ground. In life, there are things that are so near, and yet seem far away. Many people seek to escape the complexities of modern life and live in the back country as it used to be some time ago. Old-fashioned values are great to have, but the world is constantly changing. Today, here in the foothills of the White Mountains, the old song, “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”, has come true. The day before Christmas and Hanukkah is a day of anticipation for children of all ages waiting for the dawn of the next day. They go to bed with visions of candy canes in their head. Winter has, for the moment anyways, reached out with its icy fingers and taken hold of the season. Today the sun begins its six-month journey to the longest day of the year. At first it moves very slowly, only a few seconds at a time. It is a great time of year to set our intentions for positive changes in our lives. It only takes a few seconds. With a recent coating of white snow we now have a realistic hope of having white holidays here in the foothills of the White Mountains. “Hope springs eternal” is an old saying that when we live with hope, we may be manifesting something positive for ourselves and others.   www.michaelhathaway.com/message-from-the-mountain Support the show

The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. Now, second by second, we start our journey towards the longest day in six months. My eyes caught a glimpse of what I thought was a leaf floating out of the sky and landing close to a lilac bush. As I got closer, I saw it was a tiny bird’s nest wreath celebrating the holidays. Just when I thought Winter had chased Fall away, Fall came back and melted much of the snow with rain and warm temperatures. In life, our expectations may not be realized because of other circumstances. We can flow with life with love and gratitude in our hearts.   Support the show

Nature has begun slowly laying the groundwork for its ice sculpture exhibit in the brook: one drop of frozen water at a time. In the winter we often throw out some cracked corn on the snow for the turkeys to find for nourishment when their food is scarce.
