Hawkeye Talk with Jimmy Hawk

Kris Murray and Payton Sandfort were great on Thursday night. Josh Dix had quite a performance off the bench, as well. Jett Howard couldn’t keep scoring at will, and the Hawkeyes advanced to 3-3 in the Big Ten Conference. Go Hawks!!

At 0-3 in the conference the Iowa men were struggling putting the ball in the basket. After a big win over top 20 Indiana in an amazing comeback, the Hawkeyes beat Rutgers on the road in a game where Iowa never trailed. The football team has received some good news in the portal, and a couple of key defensive players are coming back for another year.

Iowa’s defense dominated by shutting down Kentucky’s offense and scoring two touchdowns on interceptions. The offense didn’t make any big mistakes and did enough to help the Hawkeyes move to 8-5 on the season, capping it off with a bowl win. Captain Kirk was emotional talking about the seniors taking part in the bowl game.

They Iowa Hawkeyes and Kentucky Wildcats face off on New Years Eve…at 11 AM Central Time. Both teams will have young QBs starting and facing good defenses. It looks like rain in Nashville. Iowa lost to the 356th best team in the country on Wednesday. It was the biggest upset in the last 30 years and maybe ever. It was a tough three game stretch, made tougher with an injury to Kris Murray. The Hawkeyes football team had a lot to play for on Friday, but they couldn’t get the offense going until it was too late. The Hawkeyes men BB team are playing in the Emerald Coast Classic championship against TCU after a nail biter win over Clemson!

Fran McCaffery landed a solid 2023 basketball class with two players from Moline, one from Waukee, and a power forward from NJ. Is the portal still open for a 5th? This year’s team is a high scoring unit led by Kris Murray, and they have quite a schedule coming up. Get to Carver or watch on tv if you can’t!! This is a fun team!

Iowa needs a win on Friday to secure a Big Ten West Championship and a trip to Indy to play the winner of Michigan and Ohio State! After starting the season 3-4, Kirk Ferentz has led his team to four straight wins, despite a struggling offense. The Cornhuskers are traveling to Iowa City to play spoiler, while the Hawkeyes are looking for the 8th win in a row over the Huskers.

Huge road win for the Hawkeyes to move to 7-4 and 5-3 in the conference. With a win against Nebraska, the Hawkeyes will be headed to Indianapolis to score an upset win over the Wolverines or the Buckeyes!! GO HAWKS!!

The Hawkeyes beat the Badgers with excellent defense and special teams play. Both teams struggled offensively, but the Iowa offense was able to put the ball in the end zone a couple of times after good field position. Spencer Petras was distributing the ball to wide receivers under duress, hitting tight ends deep. The running game was rolling with true freshman Kaleb Johnson piling up 200 yards. Purdue’s game plan to throw to Charlie Jones over and over didn’t work against the Hawkeyes. Charlie got 104 yards receiving but on 19 targets and 11 catches. Iowa’s offense looked good against Northwestern with a nice passing game and running game and improved line play. The competition was down a notch, but it was fun to see. Iowa repeatedly gave the Buckeyes offense a short field, and the defense did what it could to keep Ohio State out of the end zone. Turnovers have become a huge problem for the Hawkeyes offense. The Iowa offense finally saw Alex Padilla take over in the second half, but it was his first game action of the season. It was a rocky start, to say the least, but a change was needed. Iowa’s offense struggled to move the ball consistently and couldn’t score touchdowns in the red zone. Top five teams go to Kinnick to die, but Michigan broke the code on Saturday with a mistake free offense that used long drives to chew up the clock. Iowa had a late run but couldn’t execute well enough to get a TD that would have put pressure in the Michigan offense.

The Doughboyz scored two touchdowns, one on a pick six and one in a scoop and score fumble recovery. Iowa’s offensive line keeps improving and the Hawkeyes were able to move the ball against Rutgers. Petras was slinging the ball well, and three running backs had seven or more carries. Nice road win for the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

The Hawkeyes opened up the offense on Saturday with more passes down the field against a 2–1 Nevada team with a new coach. It rained all game, and three rain delays made for a long night. It was great to see Keagan Johnson, Nico and Brody Brecht getting a lot of playing time. Kaleb Johnson led the ground attack and looks like an explosive running back!

The offense led by Brian Ferentz had another very bad performance on Saturday in a loss to the in-state rival. Iowa’s offense ranks last or close to last in every offensive category. Changes are needed now or this could be one looooong season once the Big Ten starts!

Iowa struggled on offense but notched a W over FCS power South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits were undersized but well coached with a coach who has been the head coach longer than KF has been at Iowa. What went well and what didn’t in a 7-3 victory with zero touchdowns and 21 punts?
