Give Attendance to Reading
Welcome to Give Attendance to Reading, with Max and Charlie Taylor. This podcast was born out of our love for reading and discussing theology and Christian ministry, and it has grown to include topics such as culture, geo-politics, and practical Christian living. Our goal is to cover the best books in Christian literature, one chapter at a time. By listening in each week, not only will you hear a summary of each book, but you will also get commentary on the topics discussed along with our take on how to apply the information to our everyday lives. Thanks for listening, let’s get into it!

029. Vol. 3, Ch. 5: Victory over the Devil 28.10.2024 40:26
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones We’re back! Thank you for bearing with us as we took a few weeks off to deal with things in our personal lives and recover from a cold. We are glad to be back discussing another great chapter from Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ book, Life in Christ. This week we are looking at Christ’s purpose in coming so that He could destroy the kingdom of the devil. We discuss th...
Monologue from Max 14.10.2024 8:20
We are coming off of an insanely busy week that was filled with several scheduled activities and some unexpected events, and did not have time to record our full episode. We are really sorry to our listeners for missing today, and we plan to get back on schedule starting next Monday. May you reflect on the goodness of God and all that we have to be thankful for over this beautiful fall season.
028. Vol. 3, Ch. 4: The Sinless Savior 07.10.2024 40:55
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Continuing the appeal for holiness, this epistle now shifts the attention to our perfect Messiah who came to address our sin. This chapter puts a razor-sharp focus on the reason Christ came, to rescue us from sin and give us His righteousness. We want to view Jesus properly and understand that He saves us from the guilt of sin and the power of sin. Contrar...
027. Vol. 3, Ch. 3: Holiness 30.09.2024 48:50
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones This conversation is so important. Charlie and I both known people who have been affected by wrong teaching on holiness. This includes Keswick (pronounced “kezick”) teaching, entire sanctification, and the holiness (synonymous with sinless perfection) movement, which has gained a lot of traction through many of the dispensational or arminian denominations...
026. Vol. 3, Ch. 2: Destined for Glory 23.09.2024 46:24
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones As Christians, we are confident and fully persuaded that we are destined for glory, but glory itself is not the highest prize, rather being with Christ is what we look forward to most. Our motivation in life or death should be our fellowship with him. Today we are discussing the truths that believers have confidence in our current standing in Christ, we ha...
025. Special Guest: Caison Britt - Vol. 3, Ch. 1: Children of God 16.09.2024 55:32
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones This is a special episode because we got to record it in the living room of a good friend of mine, Caison Britt. While down in Florida for a wedding of a former youth group student and a friend from college, I got to visit with Caison, and since he is a regular listener we decided to collaborate for this episode. We hope you enjoy getting to hear from Cais...
024. Vol. 2, Ch. 11: The Truth and the Lie 09.09.2024 44:41
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones It is easy to downplay the danger of a lie. In this episode, we are looking at the truth, lies, and how we should fight false doctrines that try to creep into our lives. Jones gives several reasons as to why we should be so harsh in our response to deception, and we also share some thoughts on the topics of interdenominational unity, pragmatism, and theolo...
023. Vol. 2, Ch. 10: The Anointing of the Holy Spirit 02.09.2024 38:41
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones This week we discuss the role of the Holy Spirit as it applies to doctrine as well as daily leading. After a description of the chapter’s content, we give our own take on the topic. What exactly does it mean that a Christian has no need that any man teach him? How has this historically been taken to the extreme? What are the differences between inspiration...
022. Vol. 2, Ch. 9: Of The Church 26.08.2024 42:47
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones We all see the dwindling numbers at church and the statistics paint a bleak picture for the church’s future, so what are we to do? Some say it is time to set aside nonessential differences and band together to fight the enemy, but D. Martyn Lloyd Jones preaches a different premise from this passage in 1 John. As we discuss in today’s episode, the guiding p...
021. Vol. 2, Ch. 8: The Antichrist 19.08.2024 43:15
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Before we get into the topic on the end times and the literal antichrist, we first discuss some applications for believers today, from pastors to lay church members. We must ask ourselves how we are protecting ourselves from false teaching that rises up from within the church? And are we treating our pastor as a functional Messiah rather than looking to Ch...
020. Vol. 2, Ch. 7: The Love of the World 12.08.2024 47:19
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Worldliness is a complicated and often-misunderstood topic in Christian teaching, but it doesn’t have to be. This chapter discusses what worldliness truly means (and, maybe even more helpfully, what it does not mean). From politics and technology to history and eschatology, we discuss the basic principle that worldliness is intended to mean as well as seve...
019. Vol. 2, Ch. 6: Children, Young Men, and Fathers 05.08.2024 40:52
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones This chapter was not laid out in the way we were anticipating, which was refreshing. Rather than breaking down the intricate connections and structuring of these principles, Lloyd-Jones focuses on three simple truths we need to be reminded of. These simple assurances are (1) knowing that our sins are forgiven, (2) knowing the way in which our sins are over...
018. Vol. 2, Ch. 5: Loving the Brethren 29.07.2024 39:37
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Have you ever wondered how love for the brethren affects our walk with Christ? That is what we discuss in today’s episode. We think this is a very important topic since brotherly love is the chief distinguisher of a follower of Jesus. We also touch on the seriousness of dealing treacherously with the brethren, which also leads to dealing treacherously with...
017. Vol. 2, Ch. 4: Knowing That We Know Him 22.07.2024 38:36
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Today’s discussion revolves around confidence of salvation and the importance of being assured. Probably all of us have doubted the surety of our salvation at one time or another for one reason or another, and that has an extremely limiting effect on the Christian life we are intended to live. Throughout this episode we discuss reasons for questioning our...
016. Vol. 2, Ch. 3: The Advocate 15.07.2024 38:33
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones It is such a comfort to those who are sensitive towards sin and distressed at their own potential to stray from God that we have an advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous! Once we got the episode started (😂), we were able to discuss our need for a mediator and talk about how great of a go-between Jesus is. This only magnifies the gospel in our view and caus...
015. Vol. 2, Ch. 2: Doctrine and Life 08.07.2024 50:04
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones ‘Astute’ is the word that comes to mind when we think of this chapter. The importance of doctrine being connected to life is on full display all throughout these pages. We hope the conversation is edifying in two ways (1) in seeing the utmost importance of living out the clear imperatives and instructions of Scripture, and (2) in discussing these specific...
014. Vol. 2, Ch. 1: More on Sin 01.07.2024 35:18
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones In this episode, we discuss one of our favorite chapters yet. This is one of the most comprehensive explanations of whaat sin is and why we should not commit sin that we have heard, and we are excited to talk about the content. If you haven’t read this chapter of Life in Christ, we highly recommend that you do! The struggle against sin is something that Ch...
013. Vol. 1, Ch. 13: Jesus, His Son 24.06.2024 39:28
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Christ is the theme of all of Scripture. In this episode Max and Charlie look at the historicity of Jesus and the heresies that have been taught concerning Jesus. It is of utmost importance that we understand Jesus as Scripture reveals him. The conversation also touches on other topics surrounding Jesus such as visiting the land of Israel, watching “The Ch...
012. Vol. 1, Ch. 12: The Blood of Jesus Christ 17.06.2024 39:06
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones When we truly understand how impactful the blood of Christ is, we can see why such powerful hymns have been written about it, messages preached on it’s meaning, books written, and even places dedicated to commemorate the sacredness of it. Christ’s blood bought our justification, which is the basis and the very foundation of our fellowship with God. And it...
011. Vol. 1, Ch. 11: Walking in the Light 10.06.2024 40:41
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Sadly, we are missing a co-host today. Zack is not able to record with us for the time being so cut us a little slack haha! Today we get to look at what it means to walk in the light. It involves repentance, holy living, and confessing our sin to God on a regular basis. As usual, there are many potential errors we could fall into related to this topic. We...
010. Vol. 1, Ch. 10: Sin 03.06.2024 39:28
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Thank you for listening to this increasingly unpopular yet very important topic! After looking to God, we must look at ourselves to see our sin. This requires looking into God’s Word and believing what it says about us. We have to confront what it means to “walk in darkness” before we can have fellowship with God, in whom there “is no darkness at all.” Eve...
009. Vol. 1, Ch. 9: The Holiness of God 27.05.2024 33:59
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones How does God’s holiness fit with the main theme of first John—joy? It all goes back to our fellowship with God, which we cannot know fully without understanding God’s holiness and pursuing holiness in our own lives. This conversation touches on the fact that preaching should start with God and not man’s perceived needs, the importance of education in and s...
008. Vol. 1, Ch. 8: Mysticism 20.05.2024 36:10
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Christianity can be categorized into two primary approaches: Mysticism or Evangelicalism. This becomes important in today’s chapter because it affects how we seek to have fellowship with God. One of the greatest takeaways from today’s conversation is to base our faith on intellect and reasoning from God’s Word rather than on our feelings. It all rests on t...
007. Vol. 1, Ch. 7: Knowing God 13.05.2024 37:32
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones What does it mean to be a Christian? What would you say is the essence of Christianity? This question is explored in this week’s episode as we seek to explain what fellowship with God is, what it is not, and how it is practiced. Topics such as support for Israel, prayer, and closeness with God are major themes in the conversation. We hope this episode make...
006. Vol. 1, Ch. 6: All Because of Christ 06.05.2024 33:17
Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones “That which we have seen” refers to Christ, and it is He Who is the pinnacle of the chapter we are discussing this week. We will see that Jesus can only be fully appreciated through a proper view of sin. This is one reason we cannot shy away from the honest preaching against sin if we want to cultivate real fellowship with God. We will also discuss the pro...
