Give Attendance to Reading

Welcome to Give Attendance to Reading, with Max and Charlie Taylor. This podcast was born out of our love for reading and discussing theology and Christian ministry, and it has grown to include topics such as culture, geo-politics, and practical Christian living. Our goal is to cover the best books in Christian literature, one chapter at a time. By listening in each week, not only will you hear a summary of each book, but you will also get commentary on the topics discussed along with our take on how to apply the information to our everyday lives. Thanks for listening, let’s get into it!

102. Ch. 12: Sabbath Made Simple 05.10.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Charlie Kirk closes out his book with some practical ideas on how to implement the sabbath into each week. While most of his ideas are not bad, they are lacking and insufficient for the believer, as we discuss. We must be careful not to make the day of worship about ourselves or too mystical, but we should instead use this time to center our thoughts and...

101. Ch. 11: Now It’s Your Turn to Act 28.09.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   There are plenty of obstacles and hurdles that make practicing a sabbath challenging, but this chapter leaves us motivated to be disciplined, take responsibility for our time management, and to be intentional about unplugging and being present once a week.   Next week we will discuss chapter 12 of Stop, In the Name of God.     Our next book is going to be...

100. Ch. 10: Jesus Doesn’t Offer a Day—He Offers Himself 21.09.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   In this chapter, Charlie Kirk discusses support for why the believer is not bound to keep the Sabbath. It is a really balanced perspective, and we hope the dialogue around these arguments is edifying.   Next week we will discuss chapter 11 of Stop, In the Name of God.     Our next book is going to be Letters to Auntie Fori by Martin Gilbert   Thriftbooks:...

099. Ch. 9: Are Christians Bound to the Sabbath? 14.09.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Today we discuss the heart behind the sabbath and how Christians ought to relate to it. We hope this conversation prompts you to do your own study on this important topic and follow the Spirit’s leading on how best to rest in Christ personally each week.   Next week we will discuss chapter 10 of Stop, In the Name of God.     Our next book is going to be L...

098. Ch. 8: Melachah, Eved, and Your Dog 07.09.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   In this chapter we see how Christian influence, going all the way back to the command to honor the Sabbath, gives us the grounds for finding meaning in our work, rejecting slothfulness, treating animals well, opposing slavery and tyranny, pursuing freedom, and giving dignity to all people.   Next week we will discuss chapter 9 of Stop, In the Name of God....

097. Ch. 7: The Sabbath Improves Your Sleep 31.08.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Sleep is part of God’s design for us, and yet, our culture glorifies running on less and less sleep. Technology ties us up later into the night. And functioning without sleep gives us the illusion of self-sufficiency. All of this is counter to God’s plan, and the answer is to respond with faith in God’s provision and rest in Him through a disciplined slee...

096. Ch. 6: The Sabbath Improves Your Health 24.08.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Just as Jesus said, the sabbath is for man’s benefit, not the other way around. Today we discuss some of the many benefits that come when we take a break from the busy routine of life for one day each week in order to find deeper meaning in Christ. At first, the call to take a break from our phones and create a rest from our work may seem daunting, but it...

095. Ch. 5: Science, Stuff, and Power: The Age of Counterfeit Worship 17.08.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Beyond anti-racism, the earth, and self, there are three additional counterfeit religions discussed in this chapter—scientism, consumerism, and power. Each of these offers a false sense of security and robs us of worshipping God. Until we set our hearts on worshipping God, we will not see the benefit of honoring the sabbath.   Next week we will discuss ch...

094. Ch. 4: What Do You Worship 10.08.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Why do we worship things other than God? What happens when we focus only on ourselves? How are the anti-racism and climate control movements religious causes? What should our generation do in light of modern-day idolatry? All of these questions come up in this discussion over chapter 4 of this book.   Next week we will discuss chapter 5 of Stop, In the Na...

093. Ch. 3: The History of the Sabbath 03.08.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Join us as we walk through history from creation to the present to see how the sabbath has been followed and interpreted at different stages down through time. This is not merely a passive rest or recreation, it is a taste of the future Messianic Age, a rest from creating or striving, and an intentional choice for presence and consecration.   Next week we...

092. Ch. 2: Nothing Doesn’t Create Something 27.07.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Faith in God is reasonable, and we happen to have evidence and arguments on our side from every discipline of study. Today we get into a discussion on the absurdity of atheism and the warrant for creationism. This is something we desperately need to understand in our lie-saturated culture. Belief in the God of the Bible is a warranted claim that is accept...

091. Ch. 1: Genesis 1:1 20.07.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   We start the investigation into the Sabbath by looking at Genesis 1:1 for an entire chapter (it actually extends into the next chapter as well). One of the best lines from this reading was, “Work finds purpose when it moves toward rest; rest finds holiness when it reflects the Creator’s own pause” (16). Everything from creation to history having purpose t...

090. Charlie Kirk’s Message for Weary Souls 13.07.2026

Stop, In the Name of God by Charlie Kirk   Today we cover the foreword, prologue, and introduction to Charlie Kirk’s seminal work before his assassination. We talk about Charlie’s legacy, friendship with Dennis Prager (who this book is dedicated to), relationship with Erika Kirk, and his mission to restore people back to life as God designed based on Scripture. Joining us to introduce the book is...

Season 3 Trailer 06.07.2026

In Season 3, we are reading Stop, In the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform Your Life by Charlie Kirk. We are excited to read from an author who was so devoted to his Christian faith on a topic that is so needed. May this not just be an interesting read, but a soul-refreshing practice that we can adopt for the rest of our lives. We are thankful you would listening and/or read alo...

089. The Happiness of Heaven 06.07.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   What a glorious entry into heaven we read about in the final pages of this allegory.   Thank you for reading Pilgrim’s Progress with us.   Looking forward to kicking off Season 3 of Give Attendance to Reading next week.

088. Through The River 01.07.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   We so appreciate John Bunyan’s realistic description of the danger of backsliding and facing fears of death and disappointing God. This reading details our pilgrims’ final two challenges before entering the celestial city. Next week we will finish the book and share some personal takeaways.   Next week we will discuss pages 212-218 of Pilgrim’s Progress.     Ord...

087. Fallacies of the Faith 22.06.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Some who profess faith in Christ fall into one of these two fallacies discussed in this section: putting confidence in good deeds or merely positing a faith in Jesus without any commitment to Him (which commitment is required in the definition of true faith). Christian and Hopeful have a profitable discussion with Ignorance and amongst themselves as they continu...

086. Our Conversion 15.06.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Most of the reading today covers the conversation between Christian and Hopeful about Hopeful’s conversion story. There are so many good reminders from this portion, especially the fact that we should be eager to share our own conversion story with those around us. We hope this episode encourages you to do so.   Next week we will discuss pages 194-204 to “Manner...

085. The Hour of Temptation 08.06.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Christian and Hopeful are faced with one test after another on this leg of their journey, but they continue to make progress towards the City of Zion. This section is a good reminder that regardless of any failures you may have encountered this past week, continue to walk by faith, pursue God’s Word, and be mindful of the danger of turning aside from Him, even j...

084. The Story of Little-Faith 01.06.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   After a crazy three months, we’re back and excited to pick up where we left off in Pilgrim’s Progress and see this classic through! We rejoin Christian and Hopeful as they leave the shepherds and continue on their journey. After encounters with Ignorance and Turn-Away, Christian and Hopeful talk at length about a traveler named Little-Faith.   Next week we will...

083. Instruction from the Shepherds 23.02.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   The tired pilgrims reach the Delectable Mountains where they encounter four shepherds, Knowledge, Experience, Watchful, and Sincere, who resemble faithful pastors imparting wisdom to their flocks. During their time with these four shepherds, Christian and Hopeful are instructed and given timely cautions for the rest of their journey.   Next week we will discuss...

082. Giant Despair and Doubting Castle 16.02.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Shortly after their time of reprieve at the River of God, Christian and Hopeful go astray into the By-Path Meadow and are caught by Giant Despair. We get to preview the effects sin has in the life of a believer as the two pilgrims are brutally beaten by Giant Despair and trapped in Doubting Castle. Next week we will see how they escape.   Next week we will discu...

081. Worldly Travelers, Demas, and Lot’s Wife 02.02.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   As Christian and Hopeful continue their journey, they are confronted by By-Ends and his three companions. After this encounter, they meet Demas beside the path who invites them to turn aside to see a silver mine. Finally, they come across Lot’s wife, who was turned into a pillar of salt. These meetings serve as sobering reminders to Christian and Hopeful as they...

080. Faithful is Martyred 26.01.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   In this section, Faithful is martyred for his faith. His courage and stand for the truth cost him his life, but ultimately he was ushered into the presence of God even before Christian was. May we have the same conviction and spiritual strength in our own lives.   Next week we will discuss pages 134-146 to “The River of God” of Pilgrim’s Progress.     Order the...

079. Vanity Fair 19.01.2026

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   In their journey, Christian and Faithful encounter their old friend Evangelist who gives them wise counsel and exhorts them to withstand the coming trials they were sure to face. Then they head into Vanity Fair, where they meet with new challenges and persecution. We will see what happens to them next week.   Next week we will discuss pages 123-133 of Pilgrim’s...
