Equinox Deschanel (Joe McMahon)
Etheric Currents
Listen for Etheric Currents every Monday. Host Equinox Deschanel (aka Joe McMahon IRL) explores the RadioSpiral library, looking for both seldom-heard gems and audience favorites, mining the vast reaches of Creative Commons music, and may indulge in an occasional Equinoctal improvisation from time to time. With a relaxing combo of beats and ambience, we hope you’ll tune in, groove a bit, and relax.

Odcinki
Una Voce 27.10.2026
It’s been a minute since Equinox did an artist feature, and today he was reminded of the music of Rus Foster aka Una Voce — and we just happen to have enough tracks from him to do a show.
Unexpected weather 20.10.2026
This week in Equinox’s neck of the woods, we had a sudden jump from fall weather back into the heat of summer and then back again, so this week’s music is an imitation of that. We’ll have music cool and hot to reflect that weather: Hendu’s Groove, Paul Nagle, Cousin Silas, deeB, 4T Thieves, and lots more.
Off Beat 13.10.2026
Tonight’s show features tracks from five new albums, all of which take rhythm-based music and go interesting places with it.
Goodbyes, Farewells, Returns 22.09.2026
Equinox is just back from a trip to Malaysia, and it was kind of hard to come back. So many new friends and experiences, and a truly lovely place to be, this trip. But he is back, and it's good to be closer to friends here too, so tonight's show is about those feelings of leaving and returning, of farewells and hellos.
Loren Nerell 1961-2026 28.07.2026
I was saddened to hear that Loren Nerell, who I’d exchanged a few emails with about Indonesian gamelan, had died this past week, so I’m doing a show in honor of him this week. We’ll hear tracks from a number of his albums.
Captain FOG’s 80th 21.07.2026
A very special event tonight: we’re featuring the music of John DuVal for his 80th birthday. We’ll hear music from his various solo albums and from mind1spiral. It was hard to cut it down to only two hours! So much great music.
New releases and… 07.07.2026
Two new releases tonight: Romantic, Visceral from Mahorka and WeirdWired from Jawhinge. After that we’ll see what I feel like spinning.
Sphere and spheric 30.06.2026
Great new album, Sphere, from Stratosphere, and what better accompaniment than spheric lounge? Be there and be round.
Starting the summer with brioskj 23.06.2026
To start off the warm weather, Equinox is having a dance party at the Beach Shack in SL. The Italian artist known as brioskj released a fun new album this week, The Persuaders, in all its neon glory, and it’s time to give him a feature.
Melange, with beats 09.06.2026
No new releases that worked for the show this week, so Equinox dug back into the music he’s downloaded this year. We’ll have some bloopy beats, some Middle-Eastern electronica, and a Morandi Experiment EP.
New releases 02.06.2026
We have a TON of new releases. Equinox will be playing music from Mahorka, from Kahvi, from Projekt.
100 Miles 26.05.2026
Tomorrow will be May 26, 2026: the 100th anniversary of the birth of Miles Davis. Those of you who are jazz fans are nodding; for those of you who aren’t: Miles was one of the major forces in jazz in the 20th century, with a career spanning nearly five decades. He heavily influenced many of the styles of jazz: bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, third stream, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. And as a trumpet...
Progressus Premiere 28.04.2026
Equinox has been away for a while and has missed a couple show announcements — sorry all! He will have a show tonight, featuring the music of Grosso Gadgetto (Christian Gonzales) from Lyon, France. It’s a mostly ambient show tonight, with a few beats; Grosso Gadgetto leans more toward the cinematic ambient than anything else, and it’s a trip through shadowy streets and rainy nights.
Clouds I 11.11.2025
Tonight’s show features music about clouds. In fact, there are so many tracks in the library about clouds that we’ll have to do at least one more show of “cloud music”, and maybe more. Some quiet tracks, some ambient, some beats.
Pot Luck 08.07.2025
Guess who has two thumbs and didn’t plan a show? Yep, this guy.
Timeless 01.07.2025
I don’t know about you, but I could use a release from tension, at least for a couple hours, so tonight’s show is all about contemplative music. All of it has beats, but moves slowly and gives you time to sink in and enjoy: Thom Brennan, Tone Ghost Ether, The Lovely Moon, and EugeneKha tonight.
Summer’s Here 24.06.2025
We’re just a bit past the summer solstice, so some summer music seems appropriate. All the tracks tonight reference summer in one way or another, and we’ll kick back and let some warm wash over us.
ø 17.06.2025
A new-to-us artist, Wave Resistance, has released the intriguingly-titled ø, which we’ll be hearing from tonight. ø refers to the planet Saturn, so we’ll be pulling a number of other saturnine tracks for the rest of the show: Brother Saturn for sure, and a number of other tracks that also reference Saturn or its moons. Maybe some Jupiter in there too, and other outer planets!
Lynch Tribute II 13.05.2025
Tonight is the second of three shows dedicated to Jack Hertz’s 5+ hour David Lynch tribute. Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti are both close to my heart; I first heard their music on Twin Peaks and it’s been a deep influence for me ever since. I’ve expanded my Lynchian listening since then with the Eraserhead soundtrack, among others. Tonight’s tracks are from many artists, including a bunch who’ve not...
Green! 18.03.2025
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, so Equinox has chosen a bunch of tracks from the library that all have “green” somewhere in their titles. We’ll have a more beaty first half, and a very ambient second half to wind down with. Come on by for the, uh, listening of the green?
Another Neglected Evening with Mark Cotton 06.02.2024
Tonight we’re going to feature one of my favorite long-form ambient artists, Mark Cotton, also known as Another Neglected Hobby. I’d heard Mark’s music in passing on The Old Station, but I didn’t really become a fan until I heard his wonderful Steemer, which came out of a wild chance resonance at the place where he lives and a Stanley Steemer truck running its extractor. He spotted (and recorded)...
Radiant & Talking Pictures 25.07.2023
This episode features Stellaterra’s great “Radiant” release — a loving tribute to Berlin School. We also will hear Mahorka’s “Talking Pictures” release, with contributions from many Mahorka artists, each taking a still from famous movies as a prompt. We’ll round out the second hour with some extra tracks from Ether, Team Metlay, and Rinse, Repeat.
Numbers Stations 04.07.2023
This show features tracks built on sounds from the CONET Project: recordings of “numbers stations”. These radio stations are coded messages to spies, alerting them as to what decryption keys they should be using. On the surface, they are mysterious strings of numbers or letters in the international phonetic alphabet, recited by synthesized voices: excellent raw material for electronic musicians. T...
Thom Brennan’s “Aftermath” and Two Bump Foots (Feet?) 27.06.2023
We premiered (at least for our listeners) Thom Brennan’s Aftermath release, which came out the week before this episode was recorded, and rounded out the show with two releases from Bump Foot, the Fail EP from Drugstore, and the gnomic QX#55’s 6+6=12. Thom has come through with his usual smooth, deceptively simple sequencer-driven melodies, and the other two contrast nicely with a bit more attitud...
Away Space and Requiem for a Neural Network 20.06.2023
Two Kahvi releases, one featuring 4T Thieves and Pandacetamol, and the other featuring various Kahvi artists. Lots of beats and a couple of great remixes.
