BeQuest: A D&D Road Trip

The knights venture deep into the cavern of mysteries, where not even the oppressive desert sun can follow. The Knight of Bottles, restrains his baleful touch in a show of mastery or care, hard won across his journey. Scroll and Mask and dragged through the rituals of ablution, but the stain of their purpose is not so easily laundered. The Grey Knight comes face to face with a pale imitation, but...

The heat shimmer and dancing sands obscure my sight of the Knights, though four figures cast long shadows even in the endless noon. Four pillars extend from the sand, like fingers of some titan which lay beneath. First, the Pillar of Spines; warm but inane. It shares what has passed for arboreal wisdom in this barren place. Second, the Pillar of Pious Reach; Kind but passive. It tries to help but...

The knights retreat to a grand citadel amidst a field of cured meat. The Knight of Bottles hesitates when the rest fall behind him in unnatural lockstep. The Scroll grows dissatisfied with its casual use by scrivener and scribe. The Knight of Masks, he of the beguiling smile and silver tongue, is brought low by unexpected appearance of his own heart’s desire. Skull is scorned when their host does...

And so the weary Knights make to leave the great city, but even this cannot be without struggle. At their chariot, the horses are spooked. A man with no name presents an ending to this tale; but I see further still! Skull is laid bare before the Spectre of the King, who points onward ahead of the Knights but behind Bottle. For a moment Mask is seen clearly both by Knights and my own sight. He reve...

A shadow falls across the great free city, cast in the dancing red light of fire. Four Knights, five questions, fewer answers than can satisfy the Knight of Scrolls, but Bottle cracks under so little scrutiny. The knights enjoy a sip of unearned peace within the eye of the storm, but from there all destinations are the maelstrom. The pieces are arranged on either side for a great conflict, their p...

The sunken house sits empty but for the whispers of schemers. Hear them hiss: The Knight of Skulls is dead, all hail the Knight of the Cracked Skull. The lance of Knights don holy vestments, seeking to hide their shame. But hark! Hear the child's cry. To arms! To arms! The Knights claim that which they have no right to: Mask threatens a damnation he has no authority to utter, as the Knight of Bott...

And ‘lo they wept or’e the Knight of Skulls, broken in the arms of his brother, a voice from beyond echoing in their ears. To darkness they turn! Out of light! To darkness! The Knight of Masks speaks in a false voice to His flocks whilst the Knights of Bottle and Scoll wreak havoc in a room of bones. All the while the brother laughs with his infernal beast, that unholy marriage of canine and prima...

I see a dance, vulgar and bizarre. Mask leads the dance, though neither he, nor any dancer know the steps; Yet in its conclusion the Knights are welcomed into the heart of the festival. The knights bargain for knowledge forbidden. Two bottles of knightly ichor loom over the tale. One with the trickster, one with the jealous knight. Both portent disaster. The hireling pays the price, while Skull ga...

Now beyond where credit extends to their names, only the prince of metals and its lesser cousins will speak for the knights. The quartermaster spends freely on strands and sticks, be they half score in length or cast from pork, but the yellow and purple baubles will be left behind. A new foe suddenly appears and is crushed under a mighty tree, a new more suddenly friend crawls out from the fallen...

Once more, together are the knights. The forces against them lash out at that piece of knightly bulwark that has been broken before, the fallen king. The Knight of Scrolls is spared the title of oathbreaker by magnanimous release. The Knight of Bottles in search of answers rings in tune with the deathseer’s bell. The proud hen preens before her brood. Thus, the fourth wears the guise of the Grim C...

Fish and lentils spill over the smoldering edge, as the burn hole in the center of map spreads outward. The Knight of Scrolls is driven to rage by the visage of the Red Maiden inked with malice unto the curled parchment, but the Skull holds a defiant grin before the coalited attack of onescore such pages. The Knight of Bottles cannot avert his covetous gaze from the Colossus. The Knight of Masks h...

The knights find succor in a towne choked by the oppressive gaze of an unfocused eye. The Knight of Bottles heeds the words of the Prophet Profiteer, though the meaning of these missives is absent or occluded before my sight. A knight’s Mask slips aside to reveal that most ancient of curses, she of the Scroll has knowledge of the cleansing rites, but there is no time, and so the wound festers. The...

I see the knights gathered at a well-worn table, its grand symmetry made naught by an empty chair. No crown, no banner, no seal to bind the knights, yet they follow and do not forswear the shadow cast by the empty throne. A spirit, freed from torment, offers guidance. It is rejected and cast back into that frozen place. In the hall of the curse-tongue wheelwright, the Knight of Bottles shall call...

And there on the horizon, a great chariot did chase the setting sun, and the four knights each were bound to a spoke of the great wheel. Skull and Mask did weigh their might stone for stone in a struggle for the reins, futile for when the scales tipped, the horses would not be driven by strength alone. Hark! A destination! In shade deeper than oaks can cast, a gaol for inmate and warden alike. The...

And in the flames I saw four knights, traveling in their queer, el-shaped way to converge and surround a fallen king. I saw the Knight of Scrolls, her squire bewitched by a glittering pond beneath the earth. I saw the Knight of Bottles, offer his gifts to the people, and lo those bottles he did not sell, he smashed at the feet of the Red Maiden. There too was the Knight of Masks, removed from his...
