Jim, A.Ron, and Cecily talk about the latest things that have flashed before their eyes. This week's topics include the new sci-fi thriller from Netflix, I Am Mother (00:00:00), as well as the belated season five of Black Mirror (00:19:24), before wrapping up the stellar first season of Good Omens (00:42:36) and briefly discussing our lack of coverage for The Handmaid's Tale (00:57:40). If you wan...

Jim and I went to see the latest X-Men flick, Dark Phoenix. It's not as bad as it's Rotten Tomatoes rating would imply, but it's certainly not good. And it's unfortunately because once again a classic X-Men plotline is burnt (refried, in this case) and all-time great Magneto and Professor X performances by Fassbender and MacElvoy are wasted on a script with muddled characters and paper thin villai...

The final episode of HBO's Chernobyl, "Vichnaya Pamyat" derives it's title from the traditional prayer said at the end of an Eastern Orthadox funeral; "memory eternal". Our hope is that everyone who has watched this and will watch this in the years to come takes to heart this encomium, that we need to remember the cost of lies, the cost of taking our eye off our institutions and systems we setup t...

Jim and I have come to Deadwood at long last, to behold it in movie form. We've seen differing amounts, but we have a lot of esteem for David Milch's western epic, and we thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent this week at the old camp. We talk about our experiences with the show, how Justified informs our thoughts on Deadwood and vice versa, Milch's thoughts on mortality, and how amazingly the mov...

Jim, A.Ron and Cecily team up to take on the end of the world as envisioned by Amazon Prime's Good Omens. Adapted from the novel of the same name by co-author Neil Gaiman himself, it offers a warm, funny, and human take on the Apocalypse, focusing on the unlikely friendship between a demon (David Tennant) and an angel (Michael Sheen) who have decided they like Earth like it is, thankyouverymuch, a...

Jim and I are both long-time fans of Godzilla, and we're here to report that this here is a really great Godzilla... trapped in a really, really dumb film. Godzilla: King of the Monsters has never looked better, has never been more bad@ss, has never been a meaner lizard, the problem is the homo sapiens that keep interrupting the truly amazing kaiju action we're getting here. If you can find a dumb...

Hello, comrades! It's time once again to descend into the man-made hell of Chernobyl, now with 100% more puppy-murder! The deep irony of the episode's title, "The Happiness of All Mankind", underscores the misery of the people who were forced to evacuate, the soul and body destroying heroism of the soldiers and engineers doing the work that must be done, as well as the predicament of the people th...

Me, Cecily and Jim have some recommendations and thoughts for your weekend viewing! We rave about the nearly flawless two seasons of Fleabag we just saw on Amazon Prime (00:00:00), Jim gives a bit of a preview for Netflix's new dramedy Dead to Me (00:00:00), starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, and then... we get to our review of The Perfection (00:00:00). This is a movie that Jim wa...

If you're wishing for a three-way review of Disney's latest live-action adaptation, Aladdin, then listener you're in luck. Wish granted. Cecily, Jim, and I went to see it tonight with appropriately low expectations, but were very pleasantly surprised at how much fun and energy the movie provided. Better, the script smartly adapted the original, improving it's pacing while also adding depth to Jaf...

Jim and I have seen episode three of HBO's Chernobyl series, "Open Wide, O Earth", and are shaken by the graphic depiction of the Chernobyl first responders' last days. We get to see the horror from multiple perspectives, the victims themselves, the and the friends and family who struggle to cope with this strange manner of death and the danger it poses to them. Meanwhile as the Soviets manage to...

The Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy reaches it's thrilling conclusion with a look at 1998's Willow. The brain child of one George Lucas, directed by protege Ron Howard, and starring the delightful Warwick Davis, Willow still struggles to this day to find an audience. It suffers from simultaneously being curiously dark for a family film, but far too simple, uncomplicated, and broad to hold much in...

Jim and I take a belated look at the latest installment in the John Wick saga, Chapter 3: Parabellum. JW3:B, has some of the finest action sequences we've ever seen, but it's also rapidly approaching diminishing returns in terms of quantity over quality. We're all for combat innovations including insane knife work, horse and dog augmented combat, and up-armored adversaries, but there's only so man...

Jim, A.Ron and Cecily discuss their thoughts on the latest offerings from the gods of television. Catch-22 (00:00:00) - a new dark comedy/drama from Hulu based on the novel of the same name. Fleabag (00:22:50) - returning for it's second season for Amazon is this extremely funny off-beat comedy about a woman trying to get her life together starring the crazy talented Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Muhammad...

Jim and I strap on our lead shielding and check our dosimeters before doing a deep dive into the second installment of Chernobyl, the HBO miniseries about the doomed nuclear facility. In "Please Remain Calm", the stakes increase as the lives of over 60 million Europeans are threatened by the crisis, and decisions are made that will lead to the deaths of individuals to potentially save millions. So...

Excalibur is one of the most ambitious tellings of the legend of King Arthur. It's chock full of knights, castles, and excellent actors. Today we find out if Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir (?... probably) Liam Neeson, among others, can do enough heavy lifting to hold Excalibur on high or if it will forever be a stabbing pain in our rocky hearts. This podcast is an abridged version of the full, spoile...

Jim, Cecily, and A.Ron have a round table discussion about the new Watchmen trailer from HBO, the latest micro-comedy from Sundance, State of the Union, an update on Netflix's Tuca and Bertie, and Cecily and A.Ron pitch Hulu's Harlots to Jim.  Learn more about your ad choices. Novice Pokemon Trainer A.Ron is joined by S Rank Trainer Cecily to break down the action in Detective Pokemon. We were both surprised at how straightforward a kids film this was. To be fair, we weren't expecting Deadpool out of a Ryan Reynolds' starring Pokemon film, but parents looking to be thrown an adult bone over the heads of their children are probably going to be disappointed. Still, it's r...

Chernobyl is already one of the most fascinating and relevant disaster movies I can think of, and we're only one episode into it's five episode run. "1:23:45" does a great job of introducing us to the men and women that will be affected by the nuclear power plant's explosion, sets up the political dysfunction that will impede the increasingly desperate and heroic attempts to contain the environmen...

OMG! It's a movie with Sean Connery, David Thewlis, and DRAGONS? What could be better? I'll tell you what... A movie without Dennis Quaid. ANY movie without Dennis Quaid. Especially a movie without Dennis Quaid sporting a dime-store wig and an accent to match. But here we are. We've seen the movie and we have thoughts. This podcast is an abridged version of the full, spoiler-filled discussion ava...

We've got the whole crew together today, forming up like a TV-reviewing (and definitely the least rad) Voltron to tackle yet another Netflix original about piece about Ted Bundy, a powerful documentary on the fight to give power back to the people, a modern animated tale of the ups and downs of relationships and the final verdict on season two of American Gods. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil,...

The next installment of Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy features Reign of Fire, a movie so-close-to-sort-of-kind-of-good that it lands squarely into the realm of "cheesy fun." Aside from Game of Thrones, no film or series has done more to advance the art of CGI dragons as Reign, and no other film even comes close in the coveted shirtless McConaughey vs. Bale category. If you look carefully, you...

We have a buffet of TV offerings this week, including two documentaries (one about the history of marijuana in America and the other on the future of employment in the face of robotics and AI), one amazing concert experience, and one micro-comedy about BDSM and sex-work. Join our round table featuring Jim, A.Ron and Cecily as we discuss! Grass is Greener - 00:00:00Bonding - 00:14:35Homecoming - 00...

Jim and I have seen the climax to a decade's worth of world building in the MCU, Avengers: Endgame, and would like to certify it 100% awesome. Sure, you might quibble with a few cameos you don't recognize, and the more you're capable of rolling with the "Rule of Cool" the more you'll appreciate the spectacle they're putting on screen. But it's hard to imagine any fan of superhero movies not respec...

The Evil Dead trilogy are movies close to our nostalgic hearts. Join us for a discussion of how well the third installment holds up, both to its predecessors, as well as the passage of almost 30 years. Hail to the king, baby. This podcast is an abridged version of the full, spoiler-filled discussion available only to our club members. Check out our Club Bald Move page to find out how you can gain...
