The Heights Baptist Church

When you think of beautiful places, what comes to your mind? For me, mountains and mountain streams. How about luxury and extravagance? Maybe a mansion in the French Alps. Hey, what’s the perfect life? Family, friends, good times, and of course good food. Is accomplishment and productivity a part of a perfect life? We have different ideas of perfection, luxury, and beauty, but we all have concrete...

Of all our what is series questions, we come today to one perhaps the most difficult: what is hell? Perhaps the most disturbing concept in Christianity is that one day vast numbers of people will go to hell. We will know some of these, love some of these people. Maybe so disturbing it is easier to ignore or deny. Christians can go to church for years and never hear a single sermon on hell. We don’...

Here we are at message #34 of 36 in our 'What is?' series. We started with what is the Bible, what is God. We got to questions like what is salvation, what is Satan. Heading to what is heaven and hell next, but today, what is death, or really what is the afterlife now? We tend to think in general terms, heaven or hell, which is true, but not technically. Heaven and Hell are future destinations. So...

Last week we looked at the return of Christ to this world. Jesus has returned as the victorious King. It’s time for heaven? Not quite yet. Revelation 20 is going to wrap up some loose ends. Let’s read verses 1-6, as we answer: What is the millennium? When is Satan dealt with? When are unbelievers dealt with?

The Second Coming of Christ is a huge theme of the Bible. The biblical story looks to this moment. Can we even grasp how big it is? Let’s try. The first coming of Christ, His death and resurrection, is obviously a very significant event for us. If God came to this world as He is going to in the Second Coming and there had not been a first coming, then not only would Satan be defeated, so would we....

Read Psalm 73:12-17. The psalmist has a complaint, a question, a frustration. 'Is there any advantage, any reward for following the Lord? I don’t see it. It’s not working for me and those that defy God seem to be doing just fine.' The psalmist struggled with this until he remembered the future. God promises righteous be rewarded, evil will be punished. There are a lot of days it doesn’t seem like...

We have been in a long series this year called, 'What Is?'. We’ve answered questions like what is God, what is Jesus, what is the church, what are angels and demons, what is a human and today we arrive at what is the end. We are going to spend 6 Sundays answering this with questions like what is the tribulation, what is the Second Coming, what is heaven and hell. Today, what is the rapture. This i...

Our What is series brings us today to the question, 'What are angels and demons?' Remember next week, Friend Day, we are looking at what is the rapture which will kick off a 6 week study of what is the end. We will look at the tribulation, the second coming, heaven, hell, a lot of really intriguing ideas. Use that to invite your friends. But back to angels and demons. This is an area of theology w...

Today’s question: very current and very divisive. What is Israel? That question is as old as the Bible and as current as this past week’s news. Politics demands we have an answer on this. Religion demands we have an answer on this. Much of the church today that believes in replacement theology, that the church has replaced Israel. God is done with them. From religion to politics, Israel is a hot t...

Before the foundations of the world, God had a plan -- and that plan was you. This week, Pastor Jordan West walked us through Ephesians 1:3-14 and the profound truth that salvation was planned by the Father, accomplished by the Son, proclaimed by us, and secured by the Holy Spirit. You cannot earn it. You cannot lose it. And you did nothing to deserve it -- which means the glory belongs entirely t...

Marriage is more than a contract between two people — it is a covenant designed by God himself to reflect the love between Christ and the church. When a husband and wife commit to one another, they are painting a living picture of the gospel for the world to see. Drawing from Ephesians 5:21-33 and Genesis 2:18-24, we are challenged us to see marriage through God's eyes — a sacred union where two b...

What happens the moment we take our last breath? It is one of the most pressing questions any of us will ever face, and yet it is one we often push to the edges of our thinking. In this message drawn from 1 Corinthians 15, we are invited to look directly at death and the resurrection without flinching. The passage walks us through the core of the gospel itself, that Christ died, was buried, and ro...

This powerful message takes us deep into the nature of sin and salvation through Romans 5 and 6, revealing truths that transform how we understand our identity in Christ. We discover that sin is far more than just breaking rules—it's fundamentally about doing things our own way instead of aligning with God's will.

What is a human? Just another animal? Is our existence random? Science has been answering this: we came from nothing and return to nothing. We’re just another living organism in a random creation. Does that view matter? Understanding what a human is more than a philosophical discussion. It shapes laws, views of life, and how we treat each other. We are continuing today out What Is? series with the...

Last week I made the comment that the only thing we are here to do, alive to do, is a be a witness for the Gospel. Today we continue our What Is? series by looking at what is the Great Commission and before we do, let’s look at the Great Commandment. Can we obey the great commandment without obeying the great commission? Can we love God, love our neighbor without the great commission? Why would th...

The message today is not about a particular form of government. The follower of Christ follows Him under whatever government they find themselves. Throughout history, most Christians have not only had no say, they didn’t even think about having a say in the government that they followed Christ under. We continue our 'What is series' today with what is government? A lot of ways to approach this: bi...

Graduation. Marriage. Parenthood. A new job. A hard diagnosis. An unexpected loss. Retirement. Every one of those moments turns our hearts toward the future and makes us ask what comes next. Now the answer may look different in different seasons. What comes next after high school is not the same as what comes next in retirement. But I believe there is an answer to that question that fits every sea...

In case you don’t know me, I’m Mike Osborne, and I’ve had the privilege of serving here at The Heights as Executive Pastor. Or at least I will for the next 16 days. At the end of this month, I’ll be retiring after 23 years in this role and nearly 47 years in full-time ministry. So today, I’m not standing at an ending as much as I am standing at a crossroads in a long journey. If you’ve ever walked...

In this series we’ve been asking some big theological questions, like: What is the Bible, What is God the Father, and what is God the Son, what is God the Holy Spirit. And over the past couple of weeks we looked at the questions What is Sin and Salvation and What is Eternal Security. Today we’re looking at another ‘What is…’ question—What is The Great Commandment—a question that is asked of and di...

Loss can come at a moment’s notice and strike anything we have. Most of the time, the chance we would lose our job or marriage or health, tomorrow, seems so slim, it isn’t real, but it is. Ask anyone who has experienced it. We can lose anything and everything without seeing it coming. That is why it is such good news that God has something for us we don’t have to fear losing. We continue our 'What...
