The Frankencast

Frankenstein's back, for the very first time! This week, we're going way back to the origins of Death Race, and the origins of Frankenstein. (And maybe the origin of Weyland-Yutani, the evil corporation from the Alien franchise?) Join us as we discuss the bizarrely stacked cast, the weird sexual politics of Death Race world, and protect Lists at all costs. Please rate, review, and tell you...

We're finally returning to the Death Race world, with the remake/requel/whatever series. This one stars the second coming of Arnold Schwarzenegger, aka Jason Statham, and it takes place in the far-flung future of 2012. It's um, believably dystopian. Join us as we gush about Ian McShane, give this film the autism representation seal of approval, and talk about the Mario Kart-ification of th...

Eric is back this week to talk about one of HIS special interests: Yokai. We're talking about a bizarro kid's film directed by a Japanese master of horror. Join us as Eric schools Anthony on various yokai, we try to understand the yokai rules, and we puzzle out the lore of a the most recent film in a long series we haven't watched. Oh, and Frankenstein is there. Find out more about Eri...

Tim Kirk is back, and we are headed to 1950s-era Germany, a weird time for Germany, and the world. Join us as we talk about this campy, bonkers, sci-fi romp that is almost certainly a response to some of the darker events of World War II. We both got way more out of this movie than we expected to! This week, Tim Kirk is back to discuss a... challenging film. We're both lovers of amateur and in...

Anthony is back with another Tubi deep-dive and this one is quite a gem! This is another present day sci-fi-focused Frankenstein story, similar to the Bernard Rose film we recently discussed. But this film asks the question, what if stem cell research helped up make a PSYCHIC FRANKENSTEIN?!? It's sad, brutal, and campy, and features modern-era scream queen Tiffany Shepis as one of many mad sci...

Tim Kirk is back to help us turn our Frankenstein double-feature into a triple feature! This week we're surfing the Greek Weird Wave with a strange stylized dreamscape mystery full of weirdos and strangers. It's hypnotic and sometimes difficult. But rewarding. Join us! This week, Tim Kirk is back to discuss a... challenging film. We're both lovers of amateur and independent films and w...

This week Hayden is here talk about Frankenstein. This time, specifically that heartbreaking modern adaptation by Candyman director Bernard Rose. It's a huge bummer and really really good. Join us as the Monster meets his enemies' energy 100% of the time, learns all about ACAB, and befriends an old bluesman. And CW: the dog dies. It's ROUGH. Please rate, review, and tell your fiends. A...

David Ullman is back and this week, we're talking about Frankenstein! Specifically the surprisingly faithful adaptation originally released as a TNT TV movie. Join us as we talk about the non-spurned Monster, psychic connections, and Victor's own "We belong dead" moment! Find more from David at davidullman.net ! (Or, for a more curated Frankenstein-specific experience, visit...

This week, we're talking about the new installment in the MCU that EVERYONE is talking about. That's right, we're talking Soulm8te, the newest spin-off from the M3GAN Cinematic Universe. Join us as we struggle to figure out why this film is connected to M3GAN, discuss the few moments where the creators were able to justify creating ANOTHER rogue sexbot movie, and rail against AI some,...

Anthony is back with another Tubi deep dive and this is a weird one! What happens when you adapt a novel into a TV mini-series, and then you hack that TV series down into a 100 minute long feature film? Surely a lot gets lost along the way, but if the story is fun enough, maybe it will still work. And that seems to be the case with Frankenstein's Aunt, although Anthony has not been able to tra...

This week, David Ullman returns to discuss a more narrative film, but still one this is not ENTIRELY fiction. It's certainly not entirely fact either though. Join us as we once again travel to the Villa Diodati to check in with our favorite members of the literati and dig deep into the metaphorical monster that haunted Mary Shelley's dreams. This episode goes long, because we had a lot to...

A few decades after Ridley Scott made the (completely non-philosophical) Blade Runner, another film critic darling decided to try his hand in the Phillip K. Dick's cyber punk playground, and he decided to make his film twice as long and with 10 times the thematic complexities. Join us as we talk about souls, choosing an AI girlfriend over the real girls in your life, and the most clever use of...

This week, we're talking about the iconic cyberpunk neo-noir classic with so many different versions that it can be kind of confusing. We're specifically talking about the Ridley Scott approved Final Cut version. Join us as we wax extremely philosophical about this film that Ridley Scott swears is not philosophical, and absolutely gush about the stacked cast. Please rate, review, and tell...

This week, we're talking one of the summer's most buzzy indie horror films! Sorry, Obsession really isn't much of a Frankenstein story (but that didn't stop us from taking a brief detour to talk about it). BUT, Backrooms very much is, in a lot of ways. Hayden pitched that we talk about this, and he was so right. Join us as we discuss the uncanny effectiveness of liminal horror, and...

This week, Tim Kirk is back to discuss a... challenging film. We're both lovers of amateur and independent films and we both really struggled with this one. It's a strange mess of a film with a couple really cool ideas that only make the strange mess of it all that more frustrating. But we did our best all the same, and definitely had a good time talking about it, even if we didn't hav...

Get ready for some intense tonal whiplash! 42nd Street's gutter auteur Andy Milligan moved to LA and tried his hand at more comedic fare. With this one, he goes from a brutal gang violence film RIGHT into a wacky buddy comedy where bros high-five about making a vengeance monster. It's intense, violent, sweet, and goofy. Join us! Tim's new music video for The Mountain Goats' "C...

The Frankencast Fiend Family continues to grow as we welcome a new cohost into our rotating stable! David Ullman joins us this week to discuss a documentary that has been on the "maybe" pile of the podcast from day one, and boy are we glad we saved it until now. Anthony and David have an inspiring conversation about Frankenstein the novel, film adaptations over the years, and the nature...

As promised, we're back with Monster Family 2. It's... certainly a sequel to Monster Family. Expect the expected. Join us as we learn that the Yeti is a Frankencast fan, the Monster Family secretly stole Dracula's super-spy jet after the last movie, and the obviously evil perfect family is... GASP... evil. Please rate, review, and tell your fiends. And be sure to subscribe so you don&#...

It's time for more Tubi Trash, baby! But this time, it's a classic of trash from WAY before the days of Tubi. That's right, we're talking about a film from famed director Ed Wood, known for making some of the worst films ever made, like Plan 9 From Outer Space. However, this one is a lot more fun and cohesive than what many expect from an Ed Wood movie. Join Anthony as he spends ti...

This week we go to Germany by way of London for a family friendly, fart-filled romp that asks the question: what if your family was so averagely upset with each other that they got monster powers? Join us as we visit with a stacked cast of beloved British actors bringing their C-games to a movie where a standard family faces off against supervillain billionaire Dracula. Oh, and there are bat sidek...

This week, we take a look at a late-90s kid-friendly film from one of the masters of low-budget exploitation. It's an amusing and surprisingly clever Frankenstein family comedy. Join us as we discuss coincidental casting connections, lovingly ripping off Young Frankenstein, and cameos from mysterious caped individuals. Please rate, review, and tell your fiends. And be sure to subscribe so you...

Tim Kirk is back to talk about Frankenstein! Specifically the TV movie Frankenstein from 1984. Join us as we talk about this unique take on adapting Mary Shelley's novel. We have a Victor Frankenstein who is more interested in his creation, and less violent/more sympathetic creation, and yet things still go wrong. These Frankensteins just can't win! Tim's book All His Damned Mother&#39...

This week, we're discussing a movie that asks what if the story of Mary Shelley writing Frankenstein was even weirder and more fraught than it actually was? And what if Percy Shelley and Victor Frankenstein were kind of the same guy? And what if Lord Byron was awful? (Okay, that one's true.) Join us as we discuss this strange mess of a movie that we both kind of liked, but really wanted to...

Tim Kirk is back to talk about a fun little cheapy anthology film with TWO Frankensteiny segments. We had a blast talking about 60s Batman transitions, Count Alucard, and the Most Important Mexican Restaurant in Exploitation Cinema. Join us! Tim's book All His Damned Mother's Sons is still availabile! Purchase it at https://pelekinesis.square.site?cc=FRANKENCAST or just go to pele...

Anthony's diving back into the depths of Tubi this week, and he's caught a good one! Join him as he holds this beautiful fish up to the camera and smiles.
