Sunday February 16th Matthew 5:1-16 A lady by the name of Gladys Dunn moved to a new town and she decided to visit the church near her new home.  She loved the beautiful sanctuary and the powerful worship, but the sermon just went on and on and on. She looked around, and saw that many people in the congregation were actually nodding off.  Finally, when it was over, she turned to sleepy-looking gen...

Sunday February 2nd Matthew 3 (Baptism) We actually don’t know very much about Jesus’ childhood years. Luke chapter 2 tells us about Jesus being dedicated, and then says in verse 40 “   The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.” Luke also includes the story of Jesus in the temple at 12 years old, teaching the elders of Israel. He ends t...

Sunday January 26th Matthew 1:18-2:23 Even though we’re almost at the end of January, we’re going to take a look today at Matthew’s account of Jesus’ birth. And I think that’s just fine since the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on January 7th and the Feast of the 3 wise men was on January 6th. So here’s what Matthew has to say, starting in chapter 1 verse 18:   Now the birth of Jesus ...

Sunday January 19th Matthew 1:1-17 The gospel of Matthew has been described as “a book written by a Jewish man to his Jewish countrymen about the Jewish Messiah”, and that fact is established from the very first verse: “The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:” To our modern minds, a genealogy, or list of someone’s ancestors, can seem pointless or bor...

Sunday January 12th Job 38-42 So now we are nearing the end of the book of Job. We’ve seen terrible tragedy come into Job’s life and we’ve listened to Job’s three friends try to explain to Job WHY these things happened. They all agreed that Job MUST have deserved these terrible things because God is FAIR and it would be UNFAIR to let bad things happen to good people. Job defended himself each time...

Sunday January 5th Job 32-37 In  1st Timothy 4:12  the Apostle Paul reminds young Timothy that even those who are in their youth can have something valuable to offer. He says:   Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but  rather  in speech, conduct, love, faith  and  purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. As the whirlwind conversation/argument between Job and his three old frie...

Sunday December 22nd Job 4-7 Now that Job has spoken his words of grief, Eliphaz speaks up in Chapters 4 & 5 with this advice for Job: Would you mind if I said something to you? You have done this plenty of times - encouraged those who were about to quit. Your words have put fresh hope in people. But now  you’re  the one in trouble! You’ve been hit hard and you’re still reeling from the blow. But...

Sunday December 8th To start off chapter 2 of Job, here’s a little picture of what it looks like to go from bad to worse:  So, to remind you of what Job has suffered so far… in chapter one he lost all of his herds, all of his servants, and all 10 of his children, on the same day! Amazingly, Job kept his faith and he actually blessed God rather than cursing Him. But now things are going to go from...
