Pathfinder Church Messages

The mistake many of us make is to get “fixed” on who we are, even when part of who we are is taken away. This leads to feelings of irrelevance, depression & worthlessness. Although God’s opinion of us never changes and must remain the foundation... Too many of us try to create and live out our true identity on our own, but that’s foolish. On your own you’ll either believe you are better or worse than you actually are. The “true you” can only emerge while being a part of a community, which... In the pursuit of goals and dreams, one of our great temptations is to get so caught up in where we are going that we fail to focus on who we are becoming. The world rewards success at all costs, but Jesus warns us that HOW we get there matters more... Once we have listened to what God says about us, our journey toward a new identity can begin. The next step is to focus on what we’ve been given in life, our unique God-given skills, gifts, and passions. Too often we try to pursue a life that is... Despite what Jesus had told them about his resurrection, the disciples accepted the false reality that he was dead and gone forever. Like them, we have bought into a false reality about who we are (based on our mistakes, our family of origin, what we... Good is the enemy of great. We assume God wants to make us into good, polite, obedient, dutiful (IOW-“religious”) people, but God wants to make us great. Greatness is found where would never expect, however, by laying down our lives for the most... We want to be taught, to learn, to be inspired, but that’s where we often stop. God’s desire isn’t to make us smarter but to change us into the people we long to be. We see horrible situations all around us. Good people who struggle with illness, innocent children are mistreated, faithful workers are displaced. When we are overwhelmed by injustice, crying out to the God who loves them is the place we need to start. We come to God seeking protection from so many things that we fear; we even call our churches, “sanctuaries.” But what we really need is formation. Sometimes our instinct for protection prohibits God’s work of using hardship to form us. After using his life to care for widows and share Jesus with others, Stephen is viciously attacked. But in that moment of persecution, his prayer is dumfounding. He prays not for revenge but forgiveness. Church can (and should) be entertaining; there’s nothing wrong with that. But how often do we come to church to take in the show and forget to engage God himself, who is present when we gather? God wants us to experience closeness with him as friends... t is said that prayer simply changes the prayer, but prayer changes circumstances & hearts, too. Sometimes we do not have, because we do not ask. Too often we want to be told what we, or especially other people, are doing wrong. We expect God to be our cosmic drill sergeant who will whip us into shape. Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” so contentment is clearly a good and Godly thing. We all know people who do bad things, but in the Bible there are people who do bad things because God seemingly forces their hand. Sunday is still the most segregated day of the week. Christians divide themselves up by denomination, race and class. It seems grossly unfair that God would create someone to love someone else and then condemn them for acting on it.
