After Howe's testimony Senators Benjamin Wade and Zachariah Chandler felt they had enough evidence to present to President Abraham Lincoln in order to have Meade fired. Instead, at Lincoln's behest, Meade himself would appear before the committee to defend his record during the Gettysburg Campaign.
