Wildcatdojo Conversations
Karate is for everyone. So, join us each week for a 20 to 25 minute conversation on all types of subjects. We go from managing the distractions of daily life, through martial arts history and people, and common sense concepts to add to your self defense armor. Plus we have interviews and so much more. After spending over 40 years discussing life's challenges in a dojo, (both as a student and as a teacher) I decided it would be fun to share the conversations with everyone. And it is! We're having a great time with our guests each week thinking, talking and very importantly sharing a laugh or tw...

A Class of Young Students Talk About Hard Work 20.02.2023 21:13
What a great time we had - and the "we" was Sensei Randy, Sensei Tim, Sensei Jackie, and, of course, me - talking with some young people from one of our advanced classes. We talk about the karate saying "Hard work, long hours and constant repetition." This was recorded at a dojo. Although we sound proofed as much as possible, the sound is a little 'tinny' compared to...
Weird Weapons From History 13.02.2023 24:50
We attack (get it?) 13 weird weapons from history. Go to our twitter or insta pages to see pictures of the weapons. In this case - a picture really IS worth 1000 words. Sensei Derek joined in the fun and we cover everything from a Urumi to the Tzar Tank and so much more. At one point we're talking about chariots, which we talked about in our gladiator episodes. Here's a link to one of t...
A Conversation With a Friend - Welcome Sensei Carlos 06.02.2023 24:15
Tune in to meet our friend - Sensei Carlos and discuss the karate saying "Our Biggest Opponent is Ourselves." If you're a regular listener, you won't be surprised to hear we had fun. One of the topics we talked about was Ego. Way back in 2020 we did a whole episode on that. Here is the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/2985007 In case we have a any new listeners, I though...
A Story from the book The Karate Dojo - An Archived Episode 30.01.2023 18:41
Sensei Jackie, Landyn and I welcome you to our first archived episode of 2023. We chose the episode where we shared a story from Grandmaster Urban's book - The Karate Dojo. (It's a fine book. Check it out if you don't already own it!) Here is another episode where we reference his book: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/2196104 Also, we spoke to a young man who spent 6 months in a C...
Spies - We Talk About Some Famous and Not so Famous Ones 23.01.2023 20:49
Today we're joined by Sensei Derek to discuss spies. We started espionage last week. And this week, we cover some famous spies from history. We were all amazed at the different characters that make up the spy game. After you listen, share your spy story with us . We'd love to hear it. Just to do something different, I went all the way back to year 2 and retrieved one of Sensei Dereks fir...
Espionage Was Always Part of Life 16.01.2023 24:22
We're joined by Sensei Lydia and Sensei Derek as we take a look through the history of Spy v Spy. There are surprises around every corner. (Hey, a spy joke!) Join in the fun. Can we talk espionage without talking about poisons? In case you missed our entire episode on poisons - here's the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/10340583 And we mention the episode we did on the karate say...
Continuing Letter Episodes with the Letter C 09.01.2023 20:23
Sensei Jay joins in today as we discuss words like courtesy and can't. If you've listened to letter episodes before then you know that they are based on an exercise I sometimes do with students, always unpredictable, and usually funny. Today does not disappoint. For example, Landyn and I start singing a song we recorded 8 years ago to remind us that consequences exist. It's worth...
Hercules - Man, Demigod, or Just Another Crazy Warrior 02.01.2023 24:32
We're Starting 2023 with Hercules. How much fun is this? Ryan joins us, of course. He is, after all, our mythology expert. Hercules was (is?) a hoot! We are all over the conversation map on this one. We bring up Thor and although he ran recently, I've tagged him below: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/11550495 In that episode we mention an app called Listenable. They have a great course...
Bloopers: Some Laughter As We Close Out 2022 26.12.2022 19:27
The end of 2022 is here. I can not believe how fast it went. We managed to get 2 full episodes of bloopers out of this year (The usual amount, now that I think of it.) Laugh along with us as we look back on episodes we recorded in the last 1/2 of the year - and scroll down to check out episodes you might have missed. We did a you tube video on Master Kelljchian's creativity. It is totally wo...
Classical Chokes; The Book Crew Read It 19.12.2022 22:36
Today's book - Classical Chokes - was written by our instructor, Master Joseph Kelljchian. In editing I realized that we never stated on air that choking is dangerous. It is not a game and shouldn't be used unnecessarily. Master Kelljchian put a warning in the beginning of the book stating all this. Having said that - let's get to the fun: We spend time talking about everything from...
We Interview a Non Karateka Who Loves Self-control as Much as We Do 12.12.2022 23:56
Join in the conversation today with Landyn's friend Raymond. Honestly, I couldn't describe this conversation if I tried. It ranges from elections, to dojos and from debate to talky 6 year olds. I bet you will be entertained and I'm always interested in your feedback. BTW- the conversation was supposed to be about self-control and we managed to occasionally stay on point! We didn&ap...
If Our Karate is Perfect - An Old Saying Discussed 05.12.2022 23:02
It is so difficult to pick which type of episode is our favorite. We love them all. But today, with just the basic crew of Sensei Jackie, Landyn, myself and another old karate adage we manage to have fun and learn (two favorite things!). Please listen and send feedback. We love your opinions. I have a quick correction. Somewhere in all the talking I said that another karate saying was 'Repeti...
Catapults and Trebuchets - Things That Fling 28.11.2022 23:13
Today we're joined by Sensei Derek to laugh as we look at the history, science and modernization of catapults and trebuchets. (With a few distractions as we start.) Need I say, there are a lot of opinions along the way. If you want to understand why Landyn dislikes the word Constantinople, you'll need to listen to our next Blooper episode. It will air on 12.26. Catch it anytime after tha...
We Take a Run at Words That Begin With R 21.11.2022 22:59
We had fun, with our guest Pam, as we talk about everything from ridgehands to responsibility. Of course we're all over the subject map during the conversation. For example: We mentioned that Pam first appeared on the show in our Home Safety episode. Here's the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/11142251 And somehow our element episodes came up. I'm linking in the water episode...
Finishing the Three Sayings: Thank you Master Lasorsa 14.11.2022 20:00
With a lot of help, we finish our trilogy on the sayings printed in Master Kelljchian's Beginning Karate Book back in the 1980's. We did my saying and Master Brown's saying earlier (they're tagged below). Today's episode is on Master Robert Lasorsa's saying. We made many references to other episodes and here are a few: We talk about the 10 Virtues, which we brought up...
Aging While Training Part 2 - So Much to Say 07.11.2022 23:23
This week we finish our series on Aging - that is unless you send us some feedback, or come on the show to talk more about it. We'd love to hear from you. Sensei Jay is on today's show and we have a fantastic interview with our friend Sifu Rob Jones in the UK. So much fun and discussion - listen and tell us what you think. We mentioned our first Aging episode that aired just 2 weeks ago:...
Warriors From Mythology: Thor 31.10.2022 23:08
Happy Halloween. This week marks our 156th episode; 3 years of podcasting! To celebrate we invited our friend and mythology correspondent on the show to talk about Thor - in both mythology and Marvel. What fun we had recording this. Btw - Ryan mentions a man on YouTube named Dr. Jackson Crawford. I checked it out and totally recommend you take a look. He's smart and entertaining. During the e...
Training While Aging; Could it be Any Other Way? 24.10.2022 20:03
I got a few requests to do an episode on continuing to train while continuing to age. Again I ask; Could it go any other way? I reached out to friends and got so much feedback that we've actually filled Two episodes. We hope you enjoy this first one that includes an interview with our friend in Tasmania - T.D. McKinnon . We mention our meditation episode in the podcast and I was correct - t...
Grand Master Urban's Guide to Self Analysis-An Archived Episode 17.10.2022 23:00
We hope you enjoy going back and listening to old episodes once in a while. We all kind of do! This one is great because it's a subject you could visit 100 times and still hear something new. Check out the graphic on twitter (wildcatdojo) if you don't already follow us! We mention the second episode on the same subject. Here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/2234144 And ou...

Here's a link: https://www.thebigeasycook.com/ You totally ne...
Revisiting the Monkey King in the Movies 03.10.2022 20:41
Each summer we try to watch a movie and share it with you all. This year two things are true: we're late - summer is over. But we finally sat down for an afternoon and watched the movie Monkey King Reborn. It's an animated film from 2021. We had fun and hope you have fun listening. Let us know what you think of the new take on this ancient mythical monkey. We mention the Sun Wukong ep...
An Interview with Our Friend from the Air Force 26.09.2022 21:39
Another great week here at Wildcatdojo Conversations, as we talk with my brother in law, Myron, about everything from his time in the Air Force to how life has been in retirement. Landyn, Sensei Jackie and I learn a lot of cool things and we hope you will too! We don't really mention any other episodes this week. So I thought I'd link a couple of our first interviews. Maybe this will en...
Is Karate for Everyone - We Weigh In 19.09.2022 23:06
Finally we got Sensei Randy back on the show to discuss an old karate saying - Karate is for everyone, but everyone is not for karate. Listen and tell us your opinions! Of course we digress throughout the show so here are some of the links to our lack of focus. Did you know we have T shirts: https://www.cafepress.com/wildcatdojo And of course we love our sponsor Honor Athletics: https://honor-ath...
A Word About a Bad Ass Warrior & A Word From a Bad Ass Warrior 12.09.2022 19:35
You can see in the title - this will be a fun day. Landyn, Sensei Jackie and I take a look at a female gun toting Onna Bugeisha from the 1800's. But more important; we spend the second 1/2 of the show sharing a note I received from Hanshi Malanoski regarding our last book episode. Just the amount of subjects we covered will tell you how jam packed this episode is. We touched on: An episode w...
