Wildcatdojo Conversations
Karate is for everyone. So, join us each week for a 20 to 25 minute conversation on all types of subjects. We go from managing the distractions of daily life, through martial arts history and people, and common sense concepts to add to your self defense armor. Plus we have interviews and so much more. After spending over 40 years discussing life's challenges in a dojo, (both as a student and as a teacher) I decided it would be fun to share the conversations with everyone. And it is! We're having a great time with our guests each week thinking, talking and very importantly sharing a laugh or tw...

Interview with Sensei Carrera - Suikendo Karate and More 06.07.2026 24:15
A friend, Sifu Mike Allen, introduced us to Sensei Victor. What a pleasure to interview him and learn about his background, history and style. Btw - Some great stories are enclosed. One of them includes hitting the makiwara. We did an episode on that. Listen to it here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8708384 When we began talking about weapons, we touched on an ancient weapon - the Tin...
Talking Adamant, Ai and Actionless Action - Letter A Abounds 29.06.2026 22:52
The first thing we say as the episode opens is that we love Letter Episodes; exploring ideas and not really sure where the conversation is going to go. The 3 of us talk, laugh and learn. The conversation travels all over the place. Let's start with a term used often in America in the dojo - oos (This spelling is a nod to Master Kelljchian. It's commonly spelled osu). Back in 2019, we di...
Interview with Sensei Robert Lasorsa about his Dad - a WW2 Vet 22.06.2026 23:17
For the past year or so, we've been trying to create this opportunity to interview Sensei Lasorsa about his father, Frank. There is so much love, laughter and history in this episode. Two of the long stories Sensei told us had to be cut for time. We'll share those in December in our next episode of outtakes. Definitely check out our Insta to see the pic of Frank in WW2. Thanks Sensei, fo...
Fathers as Warriors 15.06.2026 23:31
In the 7 years of doing this podcast, I've never been "on time" to connect our episode to the holiday that is happening. (For those of you who might be interested - I'd need a bigger staff to pull that off.) However, this year, this episode is about Fathers and is airing the Monday before Father's Day! Congratulations to all - us and all dad's who go the distance. I...
Stories, Laughter and Mistakes from the Past Six Months 08.06.2026 23:29
I love that I don't discard our mistakes. I love sharing them and I especially love the chance to bring back guest stories. We have plenty and here are some of the episodes we're referencing. In the first few minutes we mention the term wabi sabi. Here's one of our episodes on that: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/16898149 Just in case you missed some episodes in the las...
Reality Self-Defense: It can be Fun - An Archived Episode 01.06.2026 24:46
This episode was one of our first 10 shows. That was 7 years ago! We're joined by Glenda and we cover many aspects of being prepared to defend yourself - just in case. We have done many episodes on Self-Defense. I randomly picked this one to tag in: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/3293584 Sensei Jackie mentions one of Master Kelljchian's favorite sayings about kindness. We di...
Opinions Abound on this Letter O Episode 25.05.2026 24:12
Welcome to another Letter episode. Today we're with Sensei Derek discussing over-extension, outside blocks and more. During today's discussion we mention that it might be fun to tag an old letter episode into the notes. I decided to tag our first letter episode, which is from 2021: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8108455 Also, along the way Sensei Derek brings up a great old s...
Dexterity: Another Page From 365 Days of the Warrior 18.05.2026 24:20
We love doing these homages to Master Kelljchian's thoughts and wisdom. This quote is directly related to weapon's dexterity. But, with Sensei Derek's help, we travel all over the place with it. (What else is new!). I'll tag 3 episodes here. First off we reviewed Master Kelljchian's book 365 Days of the Warrior in 2021. Here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/47737...
That's My Satori - A Conversation with Hanshi Malanoski 11.05.2026 24:38
Back in 2005 Hanshi Malanoski started a blog called That's My Satori and I'm Stickin to It. Today we discuss all kinds of things relating to the blog. We hope you enjoy it. Hanshi has been kind enough to be on the show six times. Our first two times were interview style. Here they are. Part 1: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/9551496 And Part 2: https://www.buzzsprout.com/47737...
Yogi Berra - WW 2 Vet, Baseball Great and Inventor of Yogisms 04.05.2026 20:02
Today we talk with Sensei Jay about the great baseball player, Yogi Berra. Whenever we have Sensei Jay on there's laughter and good stories. I'm attaching a couple of other episodes that Sensei Jay recorded with us. He did an episode about his dad, also a WW 2 vet back in 2021: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8329162 And since Master Kelljchian, and his individuality came up a...
The Power of Laughter 27.04.2026 23:30
Mark Twain said "The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter." Sensei Landyn, Sensei Jackie and I laugh our way through this serious subject (or visa versa). And to answer the question we asked ourselves - Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson wrote Monsters Inc. Congrats on a good job gentlemen. This episode was so jam-packed I had to cut a few great stories. You&ap...
Part 2 of the Interview with Mike's Dad: Ed Andrus 20.04.2026 24:23
A huge thanks to Mike and his dad Ed for hanging out with myself and Sensei Jackie. Thank you. Very much like last week, today's conversation is all over the place. We range from personal stories to our mutual love of self-control (self-discipline). If somehow, you've made it this far into listening and haven't heard our episode on Self-Control as a super-power - you can catch up he...
A Father, Successful Businessman, Warrior and more: Mike's Dad 13.04.2026 24:43
Tagged below is the interview where we met Mike Andrus. That led us to Ed....like our conversation with Mike - our time with Ed covers many subjects. You won't be bored. I thank Ed and Mike for their time and hope you all will get in touch after listening. Here's the episode with Mike in case you missed it: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/18782978 Don't miss our link to...
Three Weapons From India - a Conversation With Sifu Rob 06.04.2026 24:32
This week we discussed a push blade, infinity knife and sword from India. Sifu Rob Jones is familiar with all 3 and we enjoyed his company and his expertise. We first met Sifu Jones in 2021. Here is our first interview: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8931796 As the conversation went on, weapons laws in the UK came up. Here's the episode we did on that: https://www.buzzsprout.com/...
Movie Review - Miami Connection - So Bad it's Good? 30.03.2026 24:24
You'll hear right away that we watched this movie Exactly when we needed it. Laughter ensued with our guest Sensei Randy. If you've never met him, here is one of his earliest episodes: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/3554455 I actually did do a minimum of research to help us pick a movie. The research brought me to a site called The Bad Movie Bible. The host is funny and has g...
Strength and Power Part 2 - The Conversation Continues 23.03.2026 24:51
I love when the conversation is so full, it takes two episodes. We start by continuing Sensei Liam's challenge of picking if his example is one of strength or power. Remember to let me know, so I can let him know, if you liked the game and if you agree or disagree with our opinions. In this episode, where we talked a lot about internal growth, we also referenced a number of old episodes. Let...
Strength & Power Part 1; External / Internal and Amusing 16.03.2026 24:34
Sensei Liam is back. He brought the subject of Strength and Power with him. We enjoyed it so much, we've added Part 2 for next week. Today's show focuses on the external applications. But, as usual, we're all over the map. One thing we do is refer to a couple of the other times Sensei Liam joined us. He was on in 2021 talking about the relationship between Obligation and Opportunity...
Training, Security, Self Defense; An Interview with Mike Andrus 09.03.2026 24:47
I'm starting these notes with a shout out to Joy for introducing me to today's guest - Mike Andrus. We had so much fun learning about his journey, his Security Company - Safe Day Services, and his style - Systems of Combative Arts. Often, when talking to Martial Artists, the subject of self-control comes up. Of course, we did an episode on that. In fact it was one of our first episodes...
History: Karate comes to America - an Archived Episode 02.03.2026 20:47
This episode first aired in 2020. In fact it was our 19th episode! (This is our 330th:) Most of the things we mentioned in this episode we have subsequently discussed. Here are a few. When we talked about Judo, we mentioned women in training back at the beginning of the 1900s. (The memory of that episode makes me smile.) Here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/5247724 We men...
P Company (Paratroopers) - Talking with Hanshi McKinnon 23.02.2026 24:59
A few weeks ago, after recording the Fear episode with Hanshi, we got to talking about his time as a Paratrooper. Unfortunately, I had turned off the recorder. But fortunately, we realized we needed to invite him back to share the stories. I'm tagging in his first interview. (We met in 2021 and he's been a regular on the show ever since. Thank you so much Hanshi!) Here's his first...
O My, O Words, including One Knuckle Punch 16.02.2026 23:39
Sensei Jay joins us today to do a little history and a few personal stories on these terms: Obi, Out of the Line of Fire and One Knuckle Punch. Sensei Jay has been on the show quite a few times. One of his first visits is an episode called A Real Fight, A Real Mess. Here it is if you'd like to listen: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/3293584 During our discussions on the belt syste...
Sister Linda Sim 09.02.2026 19:53
So much going on in today's episode. Let's start with the fact that I'm using opening drumming furnished by the Fushi Daiko Drummers of South Florida. We interviewed the founder, Ben, and here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/15446850 We touched on alot of old episodes discussing the amazing Sister Linda Sim. One of them, an odd connection, was our show on A...
Fear is a Backstabber 02.02.2026 24:00
So much to say here....Let's start with the fact that I'm quoting our guest Hanshi TD McKinnon in the title. Thank you Hanshi. Now I'll include a caveat. When we do episodes like this, we're not claiming to have 'the answer' for anyone. We're just old-timers talking about karate concepts. Therefore, if you have great ideas on how you deal with anything we talk a...
Ever Heard Anyone Say: "Never say Can't"? 26.01.2026 24:56
Is it possible to spend 20 minutes talking about a 4 letter word and have fun? It is if you're as crazy as we are and the word is Can't. Listen and tell us your stories. Sensei Jay joined us today. At one point, the conversation turned to his dad. Back in 2021, Sensei Jay told us a lot about his dad's military experience. Here's the link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episo...
The Poison Garden at Alnwick Castle 19.01.2026 22:31
Yes, talking about a unique and poisonous garden in the UK. Did you all hear our episodes on poisons from 2022? Here's a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/10340583 That link does double duty. Yes, it's about poisons, but it is also one of the other times Sensei Lydia joined in the conversation! Enjoy. We also mention the Yew tree. Both Sensei Jackie and I think it came up...
