Print print print A pungent smell of ink and turpentine, smoking oil lamps when darkness fell, the pounding and thumping of the printing presses, shouts back and forth between the type-setters and pressmen, arguments when one or the other did not work fast enough… It seems hard to believe now, but that is how things were in this printing works for hundreds of years.

Bleilettern Diese Vorratskammer der Lettern und die Druckerei nebenan waren das Herzstück des geschäftlichen Lebens im Hause Plantin. Im Letternraum lagert ein bedeutender Teil des Unternehmenskapitals. Es besteht aus einem riesigen Vorrat an Druckbuchstaben aus Blei - insgesamt rund zehn Tonnen schwer!

Lettres de plomb Cette réserve de caractères et l'imprimerie attenante formaient véritablement le cœur de la partie professionnelle de la maison plantinienne. La salle des caractères contient une importante partie du capital de l'entreprise, sous la forme d'un énorme stock de caractères en plomb, qui pèse une dizaine de tonnes!

Lead letters This letter storage room and the Printing Room next-door were at the heart of what could be called the business side of the Plantijn house. The Letter Room contains a major part of the company’s capital, an enormous stock of lead letters, some ten tonnes in weight.

House friend According to family stories, one of the greatest Humanists in the Southern Netherlands stayed in this room: Justus Lipsius, a friend of the family for three generations: Christoffel Plantijn, Jan I Moretus and Balthasar I Moretus.

Hard cash This room is the closest anyone can get to Christoffel Plantijn. This was his room. This is where he had his private office and where he kept his liquid assets safe.

Der Druckteufel Korrekturlesen ist eine sehr anstrengende Tätigkeit. Plantin druckte vor allem in den Anfangsjahren außer niederländischen und französischen Büchern auch Werke in anderen Sprachen, unter anderem Griechisch, Latein, Spanisch, Italienisch und sogar Hebräisch, Syrisch und Aramäisch.

Titivillus La correction est une activité intellectuelle intense. Surtout au début de son entreprise, Plantin imprimait non seulement des livres en néerlandais et en français, mais également des œuvres en grec, latin, espagnol, italien et même en hébreu, syriaque et araméen.

Typesetting error Proof-reading is intense intellectual work. Plantijn printed works in Dutch and French as well as in Greek and Latin, Spanish and Italian and even in Hebrew, Syriac and Aramaic, particularly in the early days.
