This Day in Philly Sports History

On this day in 1958 the NFL held rounds 5-30 of the draft.  The Eagles selected an offensive lineman out of Cal Poly in the 21st.  While this player would never play a down in the NFL, he did go on to become a Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster.  He also is the namesake for one of the most iconic video game franchises ever.

On this day in 2002 the Eagles lost to the St. Louis Rams 29-24 in the NFC Championship game.  It was their first of 4 straight NFC Championship appearances.

On this day in 1983 the Sixers beat the Suns 113-102 for their 2nd straight win.  This just 3 days after their 14 game winning streak was snapped.  Over the course of the 1982-83 season they had six win streaks of 6 games or more, including 7 straight to open up the postseason.

On this day in 1981 the Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders 27-10 in Super Bowl XV.  It was all Raiders as Ron Jaworski threw 3 interceptions to Rod Martin.  Kenny King put the game out of reach with an 80 yard TD reception....at the end of the 1st quarter.

On this day the #3 ranked Temple Owls lost to the #8 ranked UNLV Runnin' Rebels 59-58.  This was the Owls first loss of the season.  They would go on to win their next 17 in a row and were ranked #1 heading in the NCAA Tournament where they ultimately lost in the Elite 8.

On this day in 2005 the Eagles finally got over the hump and beat the Falcons 27-10 in the NFC Championship game.  They would go on to play the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX.

It's victory Sunday.  Great win by the Eagles.  On this day in 1997 the Sixers snapped a 13 game losing streak by beating the Celtics 127-125 in overtime.  This was AI's rookie year and the first year of the Wells Fargo (Corestates) center.

On this day in 2018 the Eagles beat the Vikings 38-7 in the NFC Championship to advance to Super Bowl LII.  This was the night that the legend of Nick Foles was born.  

On this day in 2000 the Sixers lost to the Hornets 109-100, snapping a 4 game winning streak.  Despite the loss the Sixers were in the midst of a breakout year.  A.I. would make his first All-Star Game and the foundation was laid for the magical 2000-2001 NBA Finals run.

On this day in 2003 the Eagles lost to the Buccaneers 27-10 in the NFC Championship game.  After a hot start the Eagles couldn't get much done offensively in the last game at The Vet.

On this day in 2009 the Eagles lost to the Cardinals in the NFC championship game.  Donovan led the Eagles back and gave them a lead in the 4th quarter but in the end Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald proved to be too much.

On this day in 1985 the Flyers beat the Red Wings 7-5 in the 2nd game of back to back, home and home series.  Tim Kerr led the way for the Flyers with 4 goals.

On this day in 2022 the Eagles lost to the Buccaneers 31-15 in the NFC wild card game.  They were not ready for Primetime but the young players were able to gain valuable playoff experience that will help to lead them toward this year's Super Bowl.

On this day in 1965 the Sixers traded Lee Shaffer, Connie Dierking, Paul Neumann and $150,000 to the S.F. Warriors for Wilt Chamberlain.  Chamberlain would win 3 MVPs and a championship during his 3 and half seasons with the Sixers.

On this day in 1922 Ben Shibe died.  He was part owner and president of the Philadelphia Athletics.  He is the namesake of Shibe Park and is credited with the invention of the machine that standardized the stitching and manufacture of baseballs.

On this day in 2007 the Eagles lost to the Saints in New Orleans 27-24 in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs.  Also what's up with Doc's substitutions?

On this day in 1994 Steve Carlton was announced as a MLB Hall of Famer.  Carlton was at his best with the Phillies, spending 15 years winning 241 games, striking out 3031 with a 3.09 ERA.  He won 4 Cy Youngs and helped to lead the Phillies to the 1980 World Championship.

On this day in 1981 the Eagles beat the Cowboys 20-7 in the NFC Championship game to reach their first Super Bowl in team history.  It was their first appearance in a championship game since 1960.

On this day in 1993 the Eagles lost to the Cowboys 34-10 in the Divisional playoff.  This would turn out to be Reggie White's last game as an Eagle.

It's victory Monday.  The Eagles clinched the NFC East and the #1 seed with a 22-16 win over the Giants.  On this day in 1995 Mike Schmidt was announced as an inductee to the Hall of Fame. 

On this day in 1985 the Flyers beat the Canucks 5-3.  Pelle Lindburgh had 30 saves and newly called up Todd Bergen scored 2 goals.  Bergen had an interesting career that we take a look at in today's episode.  We also talk about the Phillies acquisition of Gregory Soto and give out our final regular season Eagles pick.

On this day in 1980 the Flyers lost 7-1 to the Minnesota North Stars at the Spectrum.  The loss snapped the Flyers 35 game unbeaten streak.  That streak is the longest for North American sports franchises. 

On this day in 2019 the Eagles beat the Bears on a "double doink".  Codey Parkey's game winning 43 yeard field goal attempt hit the upright then bounced off the crossbar giving the Eagles a 16-15 win in the Wild Card game.

On this day in 1991 the Eagles lost the NFC Wild Card game at the Vet to Washington 20-6 in a game where they didn't get much going.  The game ultimately cost Buddy Ryan his job.  Also, were we wrong about Doc Rivers?

On this day in 2012 the Temple Owls defeated the #5 ranked Duke Blue Devils 78-73 at the Wells Fargo Center.  Khalif Wyatt led all scorers with 22 points.
