This Day in Philly Sports History - February 22, 2023 22.02.2023

On this day in 2001 the Sixers traded Theo Ratliff, Toni Kukoc, Nazr Mohammed, and Pepe Sanchez to the Hawks for Dikembe Mutombo and Roshown McLeod.  Mutombo was the missing piece that helped lead to Sixers to the NBA Finals.  We spotlight the Philadelphia Giants.

On this day in 1988 the #1 Temple Owls beat the #5 North Carolina Tar Heels 83-66.  The Owls would head into the tournament as the #1 ranked team before losing to Duke in the Elite 8.  We spotlight the Philadelphia Stars.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 20, 2023 20.02.2023

On this day in 1996 the Drexel Dragons defeated Maryland Baltimore County 87-55 behind Malik Rose.  The Dragons would go on to make the NCAA tournament and knocked off the Memphis Tigers in the first round.  We spotlight Sonny Hill 

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 19, 2023 19.02.2023

On this day in 1993 the Temple Owls beat the St. Joe's Hawks 66-65 to go over the .500 mark for good on the season.  They would go on a run to the Elite 8.  We spotlight Dawn Staley.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 18, 2023 18.02.2023

On this day in 1983 the Sixers beat the Rockets 127-98.  Moses Malone had 26 points and 13 rebounds.  He also scored the 4 millionth point in NBA history.  We spotlight Hank Gathers.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 17, 2023 17.02.2023

On this day in 1971, the Villanova Wildcats beat Canisius 82-59 at the Palestra.  The win sparked a 9 game winning streak that ended with the Wildcats losing in the National Championship to UCLA.  The Final Four run was later vacated due to Howard Porter signing a pro contract in the ABA.  We spotlight Joe Frazier.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 16, 2023 16.02.2023

On this Day in 1970 Smokin' Joe Frazier defeated Jimmy Ellis in the 4th round to win the WBA and WBC Heavyweight Championships up in Madison Square Garden.  The win set up Ali-Frazier I in 1971.  We spotlight Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. 

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 15, 2023 15.02.2023

On this day in 1958 #7 Temple beat George Washington 62-55 for their 17th straight win.  Guy Rodgers led all scorers with 18 points.  The Owls wouldn't lose again until the Final Four when they lost to eventual National Champion Kentucky.  We spotlight Lurline Jones.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 14, 2023 14.02.2023

We're still in mourning in Philly but on this day in 1981 the St. Joe's Hawks beat the Temple Owls 61-58 at the Palestra to move to 15-5.  Coached by Jim Lynam, the Hawks went on an improbable run to the Elite Eight.  We spotlight Allen Iverson.

It's a somber Monday.  On this day in 2010 the Flyers went into the Olympic break on a 4 game winning streak after beating the Canadiens 6-2.  We spotlight Tina Sloan Green.

On this day in 2023, The Eagles take on the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.  We get you pumped for the game and give our pick.  We spotlight Malcolm Jenkins.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 11, 2023 11.02.2023

On this day in 1985 the #19 Villanova Wildcats lost to the #2 Georgetown Hoyas 57-50.  It was the second loss to Georgtown that year but the Wildcats would get the last laugh beating the Hoyas to win the National Championship.   We spotlight Bill Ellerbee.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 10, 2023 10.02.2023

On this day in 1939 The Dad Vail Rowing Association was developed.  Named after Wisconsin Rowing Coach Harry Emerson "Dad" Vail, the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest intercollegiate rowing event in the U.S.  We spotlight Frank "Tick" Coleman.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 9, 2023 09.02.2023

On this day in 2009 Penn lost to Princeton 50-49 in what became known as Black Tuesday.  After leading 33-9 at halftime and 40-13 in the 2nd half, Penn allowed Princeton to storm back.  Penn would go on to win the Ivy League and would go on to win their next 25 league games over the next season plus.  We spotlight Octavius Cato.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 8, 2023 08.02.2023

On this day in 1936 the first ever NFL Draft was held at the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia.  The Eagles had the first pick and selected halfback Jay Berwanger out of Chicago.  We also spotlight Charles Blockson a star athlete at Norristown and Penn St. who turned down a pro contract to fight for bigger purpose.

This Day in Philly Sports - February 7, 2023 07.02.2023

On this day in 2015 Hall of Fame coach Herb Magee won his 1000th career game at Jefferson University (Formerly Philadelphia Textile and Philadelphia University).  Magee coached 54 seasons and is #2 all-time in wins for all NCAA divisions trailing only Coach K.  We take a look at the Eagles rich history of black quarterbacks.

This Day in Philly Sports History - February 6, 2023 06.02.2023

On this day in 2005 the Eagles lost to the Patriots 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX.  The game was actually tied heading into the 4th quarter but Tom Brady and the Pats D led the way for the Patriots.  At the end of the day, the Eagles had 4 turnovers compared to 1 for the Patriots.  We spotlight Dick Allen, the Phillies first black superstar.

On this day in 2000 the #21 ranked Owls beat the Rhode Island Rams 74-40 in a game in which they held the Rams to 2 field goals and 9 points in the first half.  We also spotlight Bob Trice, the first black player for the Philadelphia A's.

On this day in 1976 the NBA All-Star game was played at the Spectrum.  The East won 123-109 behind MVP Dave Bing of the Washington Bullets.  Doug Collins and George McGinnis represented the Sixers in the game.  The NBA, NHL, and MLB all played their all-star games in Philly due to the Bicentennial.  We also spotlight Earl Lloyd who was the first black player to play for the Syr...

On this day in 2002 Bernard Hopkins successfully defended his undisputed middleweight title for the 15th consecutive time (a division record) when he beat Carl Daniels at the Soveriegn Center in Reading.  We also discuss Ralph Goldston, who was the first black player for the Eagles.

On this day in 1968 the Flyers tied the Oakland Seals 3-3 to snap a 3 game losing streak.  They would go on to win the West Division in their inaugural season in the NHL.  We also discuss John Kennedy who broke the color barrier for the Phillies.

On this day in 2002 longtime Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas was named the Ford C. Frick Award winner, etching his name among the all-time greats.

It's a SUPER victory Monday.  Great win by the Birds.  On this day in 2001 the Sixers had their 4 game winning streak snapped in a 96-89 loss to the Raptors.

It's NFC Championship day.  On this day in 2007, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized after a lengthy battle from surgery to repair a broken leg suffered at the Preakness.  He is one of two horses to have a statue at Churchill Downs.
