This Day in Philly Sports History

On this day in 2000 the #5 and 2nd seed Temple Owls lost to Seton Hall in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament 67-65 in overtime. We spotlight Kristen "Ace" Clement.

On this day in 1968 Wilt Chamberlain had an unofficial quintuple-double. The NBA didn't keep steals and blocks as official stats but Wilt had 53 points, 32 rebounds, 14 assists, 24 blocks and 11 steals in a 158-128 win over the Lakers. Let that sink in. Also on this day in 1991 the Sixers retired Wilt's #13. We spotlight Susan Francia.

On this day in 1995 #9 and 3rd seeded Villanova lost to Old Dominion 89-81 in triple overtime.  The Wildcats had high hopes but ultimately couldn't get out of the first round.  We spotlight Adele Boyd.

On this day in 1985 the #1 Georgetown Hoyas beat the Temple Owls 63-46 in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.  We sportlight the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). 

On this day in 2018 the East #1 seed Villanova Wildcats opened their tournament run with a 87-61 win over Radford.  The Wildcats would roll through the tournament enroute to their second national championship in 3 years.  We spotlight Theresa Shank Grentz.

On this in 1981 the St. Joe's Hawks beat #1 DePaul 49-48 in the second round of the NCAA tournament enroute to the Elite Eight.  We spotlight Andrea Kremer.  Remember to "check yourself before you wreck yourself".

On this day in 2015, Demarco Murray and Ryan Mathews were officially introduced as Philadelphia Eagles.  Chip Kelly brought both in to replace Lesean McCoy, whom he traded away a week earlier.  We spotlight Bonnie Rosen.

On this day in 1997 the Bulls beat the Sixers 108-104 but the big story was Allen Iverson giving the home crowd a glimpse of things to come when he crossed up the GOAT, Michael Jordan.  We spotlight Joanne Iverson. 

We're back in the home studio.  On this day in 2004 #1 St. Joe's lost their first game of the season, losing to Xavier 87-67 in the A-10 quarterfinals.  They would go in to be a 1 seed in the tournament and make a run to the Elite 8.  We spotlight Tara Lapinski.

On this day in 2013 the Temple Owls beat #21 VCU 84-76 to close out their last regular season Atlantic 10 game.  The would lose in their first A-10 tourney game before advance to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.  We spotlight Gina Procaccio.

On this day in 2002 Larry Bowa was thrown out of spring trining game against the Indians.  He was later suspended for a regular season game due to the ejection.  Wilt Chamberlain's #13 became the first number retired by the Globetrotters and we spotlight Billie Jean King and Sarah Edwards. 

On this day in 1971 Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali in the Fight of the Century by unanimous decision.  We spotlight Elena Delle Donne. 

On this day in 1982 the Sixers beat the Lakers 119-113,  Andrew Toney had a career high 46.  We spotlight Suzy Kolber. 

On this day 2012 the Flyers retired Mark Howe's #2 "sweater".  Howe is in the Flyers and Hockey Halls of Fame.  We spotlight Lisa Raymond.

On this day in 1987 #8 Temple Owls Beat West Virginia 70-57 to win the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.  We spotlight Dawn Staley. 

On this day in 1944, the Phillies attempted to rename themselves the Blue Jays.  The name change was an effort to "cleanse" the franchise of the stench of 5 straight 100 loss seasons and a scandal involving the former owner betting on the Phillies.  We spotlight Yolanda Laney.

On this day the Sixers lost to the Suns 125-115 in Charles Barkley's first game against his former team.  He almost had a triple double.  The big story was 7' 7" center Manute Bol hitting 6 of 12 3 point attempts in the second half. We spotlight Marilyn Stephens.

On this day in 1962 Wilt Chamberlain set the NBA single game scoring record when he dropped 100 points on the Knicks in a 169-147 win for the Warriors.  We spotlight Mo'ne Davis.

On this day in 2014 the Sixers officially retired Allen Iverson's #3.  We start our Women's History Month Spotlight with Nikki Franke.

On this day in 2019 the Phillies signed Bryce Harper to a 13 year $330 million contract with no opt out clause, essentially signing for the rest of his career.  It's played out fairly well for the Phillies thus far.  We spotlight Bernard Hopkins 

On this day in 1996, the Lower Merion Aces led by Kobe Bryant beat the Coatesville Red Raiders led by Rip Hamilton 70-65 in the PIAA District 1 semi-finals.  We spotlight Percy "Buster" Custus 

On this day in 1955 the #3 LaSalle Explorers beat the Temple Owls 59-57 at Convention Hall.  The Explorers would go all the way to the Final game before losing to San Francisco.  We spotlight Wilt Chamberlain.

The Phillies are back! On this day in 1972 the Phillies traded Rick Wise for Steve Carlton in a trade that worked out pretty well for the Phils.  We spotlight Jimmy Rollins.  Go Sixers!

On this day in 1975, Elton John released Philadelphia Freedom in honor of his friend Billie Jean King.  The song was inspired by the Philadelphia Freedoms World Team Tennis franchise that played in Philadelphia in 1974.  Ironically, the Freedoms were sold and playing in Boston under the name Lobsters when the song was released.  We spotlight Ryan Howard.

On this Day in 2019, the Flyers beat the Penguins 4-3 in OT at Lincoln Financial Field.  The game was a part of the NHL's Stadium Series.  It was the second outdoor game in Philly. (2012 Winter Classic at Citzen's Bank Park).  We spotlight the treat of Jackie Robinson by the Phillies.
