The Sharp Square

Sports EN ↓ 253 episodes

Two amateur sports bettors take a more subjective approach to sports betting. The pros use analytics, Jeff and Mike use the eyeball test. There are plenty of podcasts to listen to the ego driven professionals mock the public and tell you how you should bet. This podcast has some fun with it and owns betting as the public.

Episodes

A Love Letter to Gambling 17.08.2022

Jeff is flying solo talking about his love for betting narratives in the NFL. It's a 15 minute dive into time-tested betting concepts.

Westworld Flacco 07.08.2022

If you can't see how your bet could lose, then you are missing something. Jeff dives into the need to have nuanced thoughts about each side of a bet to know your side is worth betting. It's okay not to have a sure fire bet, just a bet that has an edge.

Because it's Freakin' John Candy 07.08.2022

Quarterbacks have intangibles that the numbers just don't measure. Trust your eyes and know who win's you bets and who costs you money. Have an idea of how you value each starting quarterback and you could implement a strategy of betting nothing but the QB matchup.

Coaching in Cambodia 07.08.2022

Where have the great coaches gone. Great that teams are evolving with analytics, but it seems that calling plays on offense is all it takes to qualify for a head coaching job. Jeff digs into why this practice is intended by owners and gm's who want to play coach from the front office.

NFL Big Game; The Mercer Rule 09.02.2022

The season finale is here and Jeff's goal is not to bet. Mike has a like on the game and is looking to gamble, which makes this podcast much more interesting.

NFL Conference Championships; Fumbled the Utter 27.01.2022

Jeff and Mike are picking the Championship games against the spread. Each game has been bet already, giving two likes out of two games. Is Mathew Stafford the answer to Sean McVay's 0-6 record versus Kyle Shanahan? Does Joe Burrow have what it takes to outlast Patrick Mahomes? All of this and Jeff's rant on why the Packers should dump the hot girl.

Hindsight 20/20; post divisional round 24.01.2022

Jeff and Mike handed too many of their picks to Cam Akers this weekend as most winners were fumbled away. Mike continued his ultimate decision winning streak while Jeff got bungled by the Bengals.

NFL Divisional Round; Line Movement Quarry 20.01.2022

After a good week picking the wildcard games, Jeff and Mike give their picks for divisional weekend. Jeff is trying to figure out edges for the Chiefs versus Bills game, while Mike wants to Icky Shuffle against the Titans.

Hindsight 20/20; post wild card weekend 17.01.2022

Jeff and Mike were on it with their playoff picks.  Both ultimate decisions were winners, and some predictions on the other games went well.

NFL Wildcard; A very Super weekend 13.01.2022

Jeff and Mike are in the post season despite a losing regular season record. Bookmakers love taking money from losers.  The guys pick all six wildcard games and each provide an ultimate decision.

Hindsight 20/20; post week 18 10.01.2022

Jeff and Mike did not end the season at .500. It was more 2-3, so back to lousy. Jeff recaps the contest games before the guys move on to the playoffs.

NFL week 18; A Couple of Three Things 06.01.2022

Jeff and Mike are all in on their super-contest picks, trying to finish the season at .500. Some suggestions for final week, specific strategies and the 5 contest picks. Ugly Betty, share-of-square and ultimate decisions are back in play!

Hindsight 20/20; post week 17 03.01.2022

Jeff and Mike finally had a monster week in the super-contest, going 4-0 on Sunday. The first opportunity to brag about good picks is here and shall not be missed.

NFL week 17; Open concept betting 29.12.2021

This one is a discussion on betting strategies for an NFL with large favorites covering at what seems to be an extremely high rate. Should big under-dog bettors stick with a "too many points" mind-set, or is it time to start embracing a squarer idea of playing the favorites?

Hindsight 20/20; post week 16 27.12.2021

Mike was all over picking winners despite the spread. Of course, Jeff found a way to turn two winners into losers. A great system for staying away from big underdogs was discovered last week and completely forgotten about this week.

NFL week 16; air conditioner and carpet 23.12.2021

Jeff and Mike experiment with their super-contest picks. At this point it's time to test out strategies for next year. This week the guys don't look at spreads and agree to pick dogs and favorites, despite the number. Probably stupid, surely square, but a fun way to look at betting NFL sides. Happy Holidays, enjoy!

Hindsight 20/20; post week 15 20.12.2021

Jeff is trying to evaluate his bets and non-bets without being beholden to just results. This is not easy as he would rather just consider he is an idiot for getting one game wrong and not betting a winner.

NFL week 15; I Need the Wolf 16.12.2021

Jeff and Mike navigate the waters of a week riddled with uncertainty. Who's in, who's out, who knows. The ultimate decisions are in, but the other picks will have to wait until Sunday. Check out Facebook Sunday afternoon for the final picks (SharpSquare). Thanks for listening.

Hindsight 20/20; post week 14 13.12.2021

Jeff is in a mood after going 0-3 in cash games and seeing the contest games go 1-4. It's time to start re-thinking underdogs and how valuable "too many points" really are.

NFL week 14; Skip the Tomato Foam 09.12.2021

This episode will define what the podcast is all about. Jeff and Mike talk about how amateur bettors might consider what to spend their precious and minimal time on when it comes to choosing their bets. It delves into how the most entertaining way, which is what amateur sports betting should be all about, to pick game,s is to focus on what YOU think you are good at predicting. Please comment on fa...

Hindsight 20/20; post week 13 06.12.2021

Jeff and Mike went 2-2 in the super-contest, but Jeff faced financial ruin when every backdoor cover was slammed shut in his face yesterday. Betting football is fun!

NFL week 13; Something strange is afoot 02.12.2021

Mike is battling through this week, but the show is loaded with picks and concepts. Jeff's ultimate decision is the ultimate market correction.  Even the share-of-square is ugly, so maybe these picks are bad enough to win.

Hindsight 20/20; post week 12 29.11.2021

Jeff and Mike phoned in the super-contest picks this week and got the results that minimal effort yield. Jeff continued his cash play streak with another winning week although Lamar made it interesting.

NFL week 12; Everything plus the Freddie Kitchens Sink 25.11.2021

With only 12 games to choose from for the super-contest, trimmings are slim for that cold turkey sandwich of week 12 picks. Ugly Betty is to gross for Mike to even comprehend, and share-of-square might depend on who calls in sick to work on Sunday. Ultimate decisions and all of the unqualified opinions your squares like to deliver.

Thanksgiving Special; Goff Bean Casserole 24.11.2021

Jeff and Mike pick all three Thanksgiving day games against the spread. We are grateful for our listeners. Thanks!
