In the secular view, suffering is never seen as a meaningful part of life but only as an interruption. In the Christian worldview, we see suffering not as an interruption, but as a mysterious introduction to the grace of God. Pastor Garth opens this passage in a message titled "Patience in Suffering," which is full of encouragement and hope for us all.

James tells his wealthy readers to "come now, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you." Ouch! Does God want us to be poor? Is that the idea? Having money is sinful? Becoming wealthy is a terrible thing? Tune in to this message as our Pastor unpacks this warning from James' letter.

We have no idea how long we will live on this earth. In light of that truth, James 4:13-17 instructs us to forsake pride in our plans and to humbly submit our lives to God and His plans.

At the end of James 3 we read about God's wisdom that brings about peace. In sharp contrast, the next 12 verses are a warning to those who make war instead of peace. James warns everyone who would fracture biblical community with selfish ambition, and jumps right into the middle of all the action with some hard-hitting advice about interpersonal conflict.

You can ask for anything your little heart desires. So what is your request? Do you ask for a new house with seven bedrooms, four bathrooms, two cleaning ladies, and a pool in the backyard? Solomon asked for wisdom, and this passage in James helps us understand why godly wisdom is critical.

Too many churches, and too many believers take a watered-down approach to life and ministry. James wants us to understand that real faith is a faith to live by every day. Authentic faith is a faith that works, and he opens this passage with a question.

White collar, blue collar, no collar – we are pursuing “a faith to live by!” And The Gathering church must never be swayed. We must not show partiality to those who have money, power, or prestige. Today, Pastor Garth explains how deadly partiality can be.

Our topic today is divorce. Not a divorce between husband and wife. Rather, a divorce between theory and practice. We’re talking about the great divorce that takes place when a man or woman decides not to practice what they preach – when they decide that the Christian message can be divorced from Christian conduct.
