In the book of Proverbs, King Solomon advises his son on the practical ways he should walk in, including repeatedly addressing the importance of walking the way of hard work. This week, Pastor Michael Baker leans into the proverbs that encourage hard work, over laziness.

Long before Jesus came to embody The Way, God empowered other men to live and point the way. The prophet Isaiah encouraged the people of God to wait for God to make a way, and listen for the voice of The Spirit, to say “This is the way; walk in it.”

Long before Jesus came to embody The Way, God empowered other men to live and point the way. King David lived and led with a passionate and poetic heart, who earnestly prayed for God to teach him how to walk in his ways.

Long before Jesus came to embody The Way, God chose and empowered leaders to live and point the way toward what it means to walk the path that God intends for His people. Moses was entrusted with the timeless commands, or laws, that provide the boundary lines to guide our path.

Christians were first known as “followers of The Way.” Though often maligned and persecuted, historical writings indicate that early followers of The Way were also respected for their set apart generosity, love, and standards of living that sought to align with the character and heart of Jesus.

We all want to find the way… the “best way” to be successful, happy, healthy and relate to God and others. But when we are honest, the ways we’ve tried don’t always lead to this elusive destination- perhaps because The Way doesn’t lead to a place, but a person…

It’s a New Year. Every one of us gets to choose- anew- the way we want to go. The way we choose will either lead to more stress, discord and exhaustion or to more joy, peace and deeper connection to God and others. This year, will we dare to humble ourselves and pray for God to show us The Way ?

You and your loved ones are invited to spend Christmas with Hosanna as we celebrate the birth of Christ and why it still matters to us today. Services will include candlelight carols, stories and scriptures of the season, and the company of friends, new and old.

On the Sunday before Christmas, we culminate our Year of Good News by remembering what the baby in the manger ultimately came to do- sacrifice his life- to set humanity free from the control of sin- so we can live by the power of his Spirit. This was far greater news than anyone could ever have expected.

The good news that was initially proclaimed to lowly shepherds would eventually reach the pious ears of Paul… and for both, the good news about Jesus was simply too good not to be shared.

There are moments when God seems silent, and we might wonder if He has a plan. Then He shows up at unlikely times to unlikely people- like Mary- and all things become possible.

Grace. It not only saves our souls, but also day by day, it restores and heals our lives.

Grace. It’s all we need. And our times of greatest weakness are the widest portal for God’s grace to flow through.

Grace. None of us deserve it. We all need it. And it is freely given to us by Jesus. It is grace that saves our souls.

As Paul lists the pieces of God’s spiritual armor that believers must put on, he includes the shoes that allow the soldier to stand firm and be ready to move over any terrain- the sandals of peace.

In the midst of the challenges and turmoil of their day, Paul encourages the believers that they can stand firm, by putting on every piece of the armor of God- including the largest protective piece- the body armor of righteousness.

Good News- our battle is not against one another. But the battle against our common spiritual enemy does require us to suit up with armor- that protects and defends. Paul begins where soldiers must- the Belt that holds all of the armor in place… Truth.

In the midst of the social and political turmoil of their day, Paul proclaimed the Good News to Christians, that they could stand steady and strong, by remaining united against a common enemy.
