“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” (1 John 2:6) This sermon breaks down the principles of “abiding in Him” as seen in this verse.

The Hebrew epistle is addressed to Christians experiencing difficult times of adversity – they were being persecuted for their faith. They allowed this to shrink their faith. “For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” (James 2:13) God is just, and will deal with sin and sinners accordingly. However, we are thankful that He is a God of mercy, and that such is triumphant over judgment. This sermon considers the mercy of God.

This sermon is an exegesis of James 2. It is not a refutation of the doctrine of salvation by faith alone. James wrote this epistle to Christians, and the second chapter served as an admonition against faith that was imperfect, or incomplete. What kind of faith does God call the Christian to have?

The Bible describes the people of the present age as those who “will be lovers of themselves…boasters, proud…without self-control…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5) We must acknowledge that most of the encouragement from the world will be tainted with this mindset. We must rather listen to what Jesus tells us.

The Hebrew writer speaks of a “boldness to enter the Holiest” which the Christian possesses (cf. Hebrews 10:19-15). He encourages the readers with the matters which secure our boldness, and exhorts them to take action. We should have boldness in approaching God, and we should never take it for granted, or neglect it.

How and what we think of God is extremely important. It greatly affects how we live our lives before Him. This study considers the three “omni” attributes of God – Omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent.

Timothy needed encouragement to share in the sufferings of the gospel with Paul. To incite courage in Timothy Paul wrote, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7)

“This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11)

In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus gave an illustration about a demon returning to a man from which he’d been cast out only to find he had not filled the void left by him. As a result, the demon reentered the man with seven other’s worse than himself. Spiritually, when a void is left from the removal of sin it must be filled with righteousness that more evil might not return to fill us.

“For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” (Romans 15:4) This sermon considers the patience and comfort to be gleaned from the Old Testament scriptures, and the hope such brings.

Titus was left in Crete by Paul to “set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city” (Titus 1:5). We see that it is God’s will that elders be appointed in every church, and that a church without elders is “lacking.” What should be the attitude of a congregation lacking in this area, and what, if any, actions should be taken toward the goal of an eldership?
