James reproved his readers for their worldly behavior with strong language which pointed them toward the implications of their actions. They should have known better that such association with the world was enough to make them enemies of God – the opposite of what they thought they were. Worldliness is not tolerated by God.

“But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14) Everywhere he went, Paul told people about the cross. What did he tell them about?

Jesus gave the reason for the Jews rejecting Him and wanting to kill Him – “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.” (John 8:37) Some give no place for the word in themselves, and will be disobedient to Christ as a result. We must guard ourselves against such.

This sermon continues a study on Hebrews 11 with verses 17-22. Abraham’s greatest test is considered, along with the faith of his progeny.

The way a Christian lives is vastly different than those in the world. One of those areas discussed by James is the way a Christian goes about planning. Some of James’ readers were showing themselves to be presumptuous and arrogant in their planning by leaving God out (cf. James 4:13-17).

The Hebrew writer mentions the faith in action of Abraham to urge his readers to their own activity in faith. Abraham and his wife are considered in light of the text.

The apostle Paul urged his gentile readers, “Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.” (Romans 11:22) Both God’s goodness, and His severity must be understood and appreciated.

The Philippian jailor asked what he must do to be saved (cf. Acts 16:30). Paul and Silas told him to believe on the Lord (v. 31). However, in Romans 10, Paul explains that you cannot believe on Him of whom you have not heard. What must I hear to be saved?

Disobedience manifests a lacking trust in God. If we trust Him we will obey Him.

When God created by His word He implemented unchangeable laws to uphold His creation. God’s creation consisted of both the visible (material) and invisible (spiritual). The natural law cannot be defied without consequence, nor can the spiritual law. We must submit.

Some seem to become embittered toward the requirements and restrictions of God’s word. They dislike the Lord’s restraints. However, we must constantly be reminded why the Lord has taken us prisoner to do His will. He has captured us that we may capture the prize (cf. Philippians 3:12).

Our initial image of rebellion consists of an openly defiant individual. However, rebellion at its core is simply a resistance, or opposition to authority. Rebellion does not necessitate a defiant disposition. This sermon considers rebellion, and our need to call sin what it is – in any context.
