On the effectiveness of teaching evaluations 05.05.2022

I talk about the effectiveness of teaching evaluations in terms of understanding performance, and looking at ways to improve. Generally teaching a valuations are not a very good indicator of performance, and they don’t give you very much information and how to actually improve.

I talk about productivity, and in particular academic productivity, where we think about efficiency of what we’re trying to do, and maximize the efficiency of performing those particular tasks. I suggest that short run productivity almost always drowns out long run productivity. And we need to focus on Longterm productivity to do well in life.

They only care about whether it’s going to solve their own individual problems. And if it doesn’t, it’s your job to figure out how to convince him that it does.

it’s important to remember that when you have young kids at home to give yourself some leeway. Stop being so difficult on yourself. These moments are the things that you can remember. I looked back and I remember the number of times and I actually snuggled with my kids compared to the number of times I was in my office. I’ll never remember the times have been my office.

wanna remind everybody to keep up their battles. Remember that it’s OK to be you, and there’s gonna be a lot of people that are gonna suppress who you are, but you need to keep going with being a good person. It’s important for yourself to be you as much as you possibly are.

It’s important to teach your kids that manual labor is actually a fun experience. We’ve tried to teach them to do little chores around the house and pay them to do that. It’s a really fun experience, and kids get to understand pride in their work.

it’s important to remember that most people‘s lives are pretty ordinary and pretty boring. We do ordinary things because that’s what people do. Don’t get diluted with the fact that your life is somehow more boring than somebody else’s. It’s a myth to believe that everybody has a lot more of a spectacular life than you do.

A trouble with micro and macro debates in management 22.04.2022

I talk about the problem of specifying that there is one possible best way to view the world. Micro scholars might say that their approach to understanding how the world works is better than macro folks view of the world, and macro folks may say the same thing - their way is better. The fact is they both matter, and we really don’t have a good sense of how the world actually works either way.
