Ozone Nightmare

Today on the 5: I came across an excellent opinion piece over on The Verge about how the CEOs of Apple and Google have done nothing about the Grok image generation problem. It's absolutely worth reading, and further evidence that these companies and their leadership only really care about keeping the money flowing.

Today on the 5: For our final commentary film this week, we did something unusual and watched a new movie, 2025's  Predator Badlands . I wasn't really that interested in this movie as it seemed like it was aiming for a different audience, and I would have been just fine passing it by. Then I saw how divisive a lot of reviews were, and at point I knew we had to watch it.

Today on the 5: One of our other commentary films this week was 1991's Dreaming The Reality , a Hong Kong "Girls With Guns" movie featuring several actors we've seen recently . This one is another magnificent entry for anyone who considers themselves an action film fan. 

Today on the 5: For one of our commentary films this week, we watched a 1979 science fiction film titled Pilot Pirx's Inquest , based on a story by Stanisaw Lem. If you enjoy classic storytelling in the vein of The Twilight Zone , this is a good one to check out!

Today on the 5: After watching this video about a video game studio closing after admitting to their use of AI , I started thinking about what it means to see these stories popping up fairly regularly. If companies keep trying to deflect customer reaction to their use of AI, what should that tell them? 

Today on the 5: For one of our commentary films this week, we watched a 1987 film titled Bloody New Year . This one tries to create a sci-fi horror movie somewhat based around New Year's Ever, and it almost works! There are a few problems holding it back from being an overlooked gem, but even so we were never bored and ended up having a good time with it.

Today on the 5: Late last week I saw a documentary on The Crtierion Channel titled Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus that looked interesting, so I decided to take a chance on it. It turned out to be a truly moving story about an artist that deserved a bigger spotlight in life. 

Today on the 5: Over the holidays I came across this Verge article making the case that the term "podcast" should be retired. Not only do I think the argument the author is making is weak to beign with, but the second half of the piece contradicts the entire idea!

Today on the 5: For our commentary film this week, Lando and I watched 1987's  Uninvited . If you only heard the synopsis and looked at the box art, you'd probably expect a low effort junky monster movie. Instead, this is a surprisingly fun and well paced B movie about a monster that isn't really all that evil!

Today on the 5: The selection for the next episode of Stacey's Book Club over on the TWiT network is a very recent release titled The Heist Of Hollow London . It's been quite a while since I've read a book I'm this conflicted about in terms of recommending.

Today on the 5: As the final "Christmas Commentary" film for this week, we watched 1975's Deep Red , aka Profondo Rosso . I was sure I had reviewed this classic from Dario Argento before, but amazingly it doesn't seem that I had. Let's get that corrected right now!

Today on the 5: For one of our commentary films this week we watched a holiday horror classic, 1974's Black Christmas . This may surprise some listeners, but I'd never seen this movie although it's been on my watchlist for quite a while now. Having seen it, I completely agree that this one is a must see regardless of whether you watch it at the holidays or not.

Today on the 5: For one of our commentary films this week, Lando and I watched a Hallmark movie titled  My Southern Family Christmas . You read that right, we watched a Hallmark movie! This might seem like a joke, but I wanted to see what a Hallmark film featuring Bruce Campbell would be like. The results shouldn't really be suprising.

Today on the 5: Roguelites are a genre of video game that I have not historically had much interest in. I've tried a few, and whiler I see the appeal of the games, none have really connected with me. That might change in a big way when  Carmageddon: Rogue Shift comes out!

Today on the 5: As someone who wanders across various sites that cover movies and television, one of the recurring review subjects right now is IT: Welcome To Derry . Most of the articles feature pictures of the central villain, Pennywise The Dancing Clown. Every time I see them, it reminds me why I think this new version of the character is an example of terrible character design.

Today on the 5: For one of our commentary films this week, Lando and I revisited a sequel neither of us had watched in a long while, 1985's A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge . A movie that fell under the shadow of the movies that followed, this one is a lot better than most give it credit for.

Today on the 5: One of our commentary films for this week is Supercop , a Jackie Chan film co-starring Michelle Yeoh. It's certainly a fun enough movie, but after watching so many top level action films, this film is just a bit short in that department.
