Gated Galaxies

Oz 9

Fiction EN ↓ 163 episodes

It's Spring 2142 (a Tuesday), and Gated Galaxies has launched its 400 Oz-8000 ships, each carrying 50,000 "resting guests" to, hopefully, a new home on a shiny, brand-new planet. Except this whole "terraform and take over" idea isn't actually the plan; the real plan is far more nefarious and involves a great deal of cackling. But those aboard the ships don't know that, so off they toodle (those that make it out of Earth's atmosphere, at least), all shiny and optimistic. This is the story of one of those ships – the Oz 9 – and its tiny crew of hopeless incompetents. So far, they've been in spac...

Bonus: Oz 9 Meet the Characters 17.09.2023

Honestly, there's just nothing good to be gained from listening to this. It's a bunch of people old enough to know better being very silly while affecting various accents (with varying degrees of success). Good ahead and listen if you want to, but please wear headphones and do something redemptive with your hands, like making food for unhoused people or picking your nose. We'll all feel better abo...

Bonus: Meet Jonathan Pezza of Curious Matter Anthology! 10.09.2023

I know, I know, I skip a lot of bonus episodes too, but srsly, give this one a listen. Not only is Jonathan smarter than the entire crew of the Oz 9 concurrently and consecutively (yes, low bar, but still), he's also got really fun things to tell us about. Hear the interview, then for goodness' sake, stick around and hear his full-cast, immersive audio adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's "Tomorrow and T...

episode eighty-five: Dirty, greasy oligarchs 02.08.2023

Exploring the Oz 9 isn't like exploring brave new worlds in the manner of highly questionable colonialists of eras past. Except for the alligators. And the swampy bits. Also not knowing what's safe to eat (hint: not bloody much). And the near-fatal encounters on a daily basis.  OK, so it's actually quite a bit like exploring brave new worlds, except for the bravery. Just... listen to the episode....

episode eighty-four: Would it help if I spoke stupid? 18.07.2023

Exploration of the Oz 9 continues, and it's not going well. Though we did find some goldfish. And some bumper cars.  Traveling via vending machine is just unpredictable and not nearly as filling as you might imagine, but the crew are blundering around the ship from room to room and sandwich to sandwich, flirting with cowboys and this sentence is a bit long so I'm stopping now.  You've been listeni...

episode eighty-three: In short, she is baked 11.06.2023

I went back and read the opening paragraph that was here originally, and even I don't understand it, so I must have been really tired or possibly in a hostage situation when I wrote it. Anyway, it's gone, and though this means the subtitle now makes zero sense, it's still an improvement. In this episode, Olivia's I-drops (iDrops?) have gotten mixed up with some other substances, and, well, if you...

Bonus: Livestream for the Cure and Oz 9 14.05.2023

The Livestream for the Cure starts on May 17 and probably ends abruptly with much screaming on SATURDAY (not Sunday, ooops) May 20th at 8 pm when the Oz 9 crew takes over. We hope you'll join us.  Learn more here: LivestreamForTheCure.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.co...

episode eighty-two: Keep your knickers out of the biscuit tin 11.05.2023

Our crew land on a strange planet ... and find someone truly strange.  BUT: here's your chance to hear a chunk of Dr. Theo's novel as our turnip greens attempt to evade what Joe refers to as "the stupidest way to die we've come up with yet." You've been listening to: Chrisi Talyn Saje as Julie Shannon Perry as Madeline Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Tim Sherburn as Colin Eric Perry as Joe Bonnie B...

episode eighty-one: Hangover remedies and really good sunscreen 12.04.2023

Yes, I KNOW we said January, but hey, it's January somewhere, right? The Oz 9 crew are finally (?) done with their plant-based emergency and have broken free of the Milky Way Galaxy. They're currently lurking in a galaxy that (if you're looking at it sideways and are 8 years old) has a vaguely rude shape. That should keep them entertained for a while. Anyway, they might actually get off the 9 and...

Bonus: That slice of Joe Pye-Weed pie 10.03.2023

I tell ya, you turn your back for, like, three months, and someone just shoulders their way in there and takes over your ship, your characters... sheeesh. ANYWAY, if you're familiar with podcasts A Ninth World Journal or Deconstructive Criticism , you've already enjoyed the work of our own Dr. Theo Bromae, better known as David S. Dear. In this bonus episode, he gives us a glimpse of life behind t...

Bonus Discussing Oz 9: Hiatus Episode 22.02.2023

Welcome to the Audiotorium. It's Discussing Oz 9 , with Narrator and Narrator 2, Pluto, and other assorted folks. If you're not familiar with the Discussing Network and their stable of shows, Discussing Who, Discussing Trek, and Discussing Comics, you really could be listening to that instead of this. ( http://www.discussingnetwork.com/)   But in the style of Discussing Stuff, it's a review of Oz...

Bonus: Enough with the toad orgy, Two 08.02.2023

If you struggled through the classically complex and layered story of the last four seasons, you're not alone. It was, as Mrs Sheffield has it, "more twisty-turny than my graduate teaching assistant's insides after my AP Honours' Intestinal Inversion lecture and practicuum."  So Dr. Charles Tucket, who you may remember from another hiatus episode, The Oz 8000 Biosphere: Portrait of a Refuge,  has...

episode eighty: Oh my giddy aunt 31.12.2022

I'M LATE TO THE LISTEN ALONG, SO THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.  Our theme and other music is composed and performed by John Faley. Our artwork is by Lucas Elliott (who also did our COMIC BOOK and our cool pin set!! https://oz9podcast.etsy.com). Sarah Golding is our dialogue editor. Oliver Morris is our sound desiger. Oz 9 is written by Shannon Perry.  Oz 9 is a proud member of the Fable & Folly networ...

episode seventy-nine: Sand where no man is making pearls 23.10.2022

It's possible someone dies in this episode. I mean, it's possible someone dies in EVERY episode — it's really pretty astonishing when no one does — so you should probably pay attention today so you understand the chatter around the old fishbowl at work tomorrow. Today's bonus information: a really tightly woven Italian suit can protect against some wimpier weaponry.  And just like that, another pl...

episode seventy-eight: Is anyone else seeing wings? 25.09.2022

Is anyone else hearing a weird ... flapping sound? And feeling a tiny bit of a breeze? But like, a weirdly hostile breeze that's just coiled up and waiting to turn into a tornado, given even a hint of a reason? Just me? Huh. Well, it's episode 78, and if you haven't learned your lesson by now, I can't help you.  Also, there will be (WAS says voice from future) a live listen-along for season-ending...

episode seventy-seven: Mind the disco ball 28.08.2022

Content warning: There are some big emotions in this one, so please take care of you. We're getting closer to the end of Season 4, and ... well, that's it, really. We're getting closer. Break out the confetti because you get a break from us! Well, probably. We're kind of like barnacles — we have to be scraped off and then we still leave a sticky residue. Anyway, lots going on in here, so I'll just...

episode seventy-six: Covered in goat dung and yodelers 14.08.2022

It's entirely possible this story has spun a wee bit out of control. But then, isn't that a lot like...life? I mean, take your basic ergonomic keyboard. Don't you want to bash its tiny electronic brains out on a rock, only it was expensive and nominally doing something useful for your hands or wrists or something? While that might be an overreaction, might it also be considered an entirely underst...

episode seventy-five: Mad stories of trampled relatives 31.07.2022

Note: This is the final episode narrated by Richard Nadolny. His fabulous daughter Chris Nadolny Gourley takes over the mic in 76. Other note: despite what the credits say, this episode was edited by Sarah Golding and sound designed by Oliver Morris. (Both geniuses; give them lots of gigs and money.) Note 3: The subtitle is just in case he's googling himself. :) We'd say the pace is picking up, bu...

episode seventy-four: You know where the porn stash is 17.07.2022

Note: This episode is narrated by Richard Nadolny, so guard your heart. It's episode 74, and you know what that means.... DO you know what it means? Could you write it on a note and slip it to us during study hall, because we've got nothing. Things are just Nutty McNutface with this crew, and everyone's in the dark, literally and figuratively. Who can you trust when everyone's skulky and half the...

episode seventy-three: Is that a Giant Turnip? 30.06.2022

Warning: this is narrated by Richard, so take care of you. He didn't mean to make you sad. Brugmansia, it turns out, isn't a type of Italian leather shoe. Nor is it the third movement of something by Beethoven. And it is definitely NOT edible. But it can be stuck in one's mouth and swallowed, so of course, the bumfluff crew of Oz 9 did.  BTW, St. Leonard's Day isn't a real thing. But it should be....

episode seventy-two: Cahooty 11.06.2022

Content warning: Richard narrates this episode, so take care of you. This episode is dedicated in his memory. Please consider contributing to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. https://afsp.org/ Massive cahooty thanks to Oliver Morris of Kane and Feels: Daytrippers without whom this episode might never have gotten edited and out. And do stay tuned for a taste of Kane and Feels at the...

Bonus: Oz 9 Past, present, and (dare we say it) future 10.06.2022

Content Warning: Big emotions around death and suicide. Before he left us, Richard recorded several episodes ahead. Hard as it is to hear his voice, it's also a joy to have a little more Narrator to share. He wanted these episodes to go out, and we want to honor that wish.  So you will hear Richard a few more times. If that's too much for you, skip on to 76, read the transcripts instead (you can f...

episode seventy-one: Rumblings in the astral region 11.04.2022

If you've never had chocolate milkweed with rosemallows, you're really missing out. On stomach upset, whiplash-inducing vomiting, an itchy rash, and unconsciousness, which is really the best part. Despite the litany of side effects, Leet is dishing up a mug just for you, so please join us aboard the Oz 9, as we head out for another entirely pointless journey. Be sure to stay till the end to hear a...

episode seventy: Do we have any more tuber tots? 21.03.2022

Oh, hell, now we're getting all Lord of the Rings y with sacred tokens and some sort of binding agent to herd them all or whatever, blah blah blah. We're back on board the Oz 9, and the crew is far more interested in their next cocktail than in, I dunno, SAVING EARTH OR WHATEVER. Although, I could murder a cosmo.... You've been listening to Eric Perry as Dr von Haber Zetzer Sarah Golding as Mrs Sh...

episode sixty-nine (giggle): Tighter than a Minnesotan Manhole 24.02.2022

It's episode 69, and the whole world is just upside down.  Oh, come on, not even ONE "sixty-nine" joke? Sheesh. You've been listening to Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Lee Shackleford as Pluto Aaron Clark as Ben Iri Alexander as Julie Eric Perry as Mr Southers Bonnie Brantley as Jessie and Donna Shannon Perry as Madeline and Olivia June Clark Eubanks as the Albatros Richard Cowen as Leet Tim Sherb...
