Our Best Jackett

Hey guys, it's Scott. Big week over here at Best Jackett. Before we get going, I just wanted to send love and support to the people of Ukraine. I know that sounds ridiculous coming from me, like an empty gesture, but my family does try and donate regularly to a bunch of causes that we believe in. I make my political leanings pretty obvious on Twitter and I've always tried to be open about the thin...

Scott : Okay. All right, here we go. Francesco, I really appreciate you taking the time to do this, brother. Francesco : Thank you for having me! Scott : It's funny to talk to you in a formal way when you and I go so far back, and it's like, we just talked for half an hour as friends. Francesco : Right, right, right. Scott : I’ll just switch over now to interview mode. But yeah, I think the first...

Hey guys, it's Scott. I am upstate at the Otesaga Hotel outside the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. It is amazing here. It is freezing cold and there's no one here and it's like The Shining ², which is amazing because Quinn just runs up and down the halls yelling hello and nobody cares. But it was an amazing trip, much needed. And I just wanted to thank you, before I get into it, for showing...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's the last week of February and we have a lot of exciting stuff going on at Best Jackett. First, today is when Night of the Ghoul #5 comes out . It's our penultimate issue and to mark the occasion, I'm gonna put some series extras here for you to browse, some designs and sketches from Francesco . This is the issue where all the s**t hits the fan right before our shocking,...

Hey guys, it’s Scott. Big, big week here at Best Jacket. First and foremost, we have class this week . So, paid subscribers, Comic Writing 101 is happening, it will be at 9:30pm EST tomorrow night . I'm going to do it from my studio. I've been having a little trouble getting Quinn to go down to sleep, so this week I think we'll play it safe and instead of going to 4th World we'll do it a little cl...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Wednesday, and I’m very excited about tonight! We’re doing our very first livestream for annual subscribers to Our Best Jacket—there's still time to sign up and get a membership, it will include all of the classes that we've done so far for Comic Writing 101. Everything is archived for you on video and, obviously, access to all the upcoming classes, plus getting one of y...

Hey guys, it's Scott. And what an exciting day all around for comics! A huge launch day for Substack, and we have a bunch of stuff going on at Best Jackett. First and foremost, Nocterra #7 comes out Wednesday. It's the start of our brand new arc. It's five issues long and it's called Pedal to the Metal. I genuinely believe it's even better than our first one—it's got bigger shades, faster trucks,...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It is Tuesday the 18th, and I wanted to say thank you so much for all the kind birthday wishes over the weekend! I really, really appreciate it, and it warmed my cold and twisted heart. On a personal note, we did pretty much nothing, which is exactly what I was hoping to do. My parents came up and watched the kids so that I could go out to dinner with Jeanie. It's the first t...

Hey guys, it's Scott. Hope you had a great, great weekend. I did, myself. I spent a lot of it helping Emmett, our 10 year-old, do his science project, which is about which bat hits a baseball further—aluminum or wood. And he had this whole belief it would be aluminum, and then all the data showed that it was actually wood when you hit it with a sweet spot. So, he was excited. Yeah, just hunkered d...

[Apologies in advance for the scratchy audio quality, I had to record while driving around and my car loves to make every awful noise imaginable. I got myself a new microphone for the New Year, so hopefully you’ll all notice a jump in quality going forward!] Hey guys, it's Scott. I thought I'd do a fun post today, something light. I'm back in the writers room with Tyler for the Wytches TV show, an...

Hey guys, it's Scott. First of all, I hope you had a great, great Christmas and holiday season and you're gearing up for New Year's full of lots of resolutions that you can actually meet. I'm sure I will never meet mine, but I'm excited to make them and break them within a few days. Christmas was great here, my parents came up visited from the city. They still live in my high school apartment and...

[Disclaimer: The transcript is from a previous recording where the audio was corrupted, so the gist of it is the same, but the new audio is worded a bit differently. Please forward all complaints to me, Scott, who doesn’t want to get my assistant Tyler in any trouble…] Hey guys, it’s Scott. I just want to remind everyone that we’re pushing the class on 3-act structure to next Wednesday the 22nd at...

Continued from Wednesday’s post on my personal goings-on and the latest items on my work docket: Lastly, I wanted to give a couple thoughts on the industry, because it's something that's been on my mind. I had a really good set of conversations with James Tynion IV and Tyler (who runs this site) and a bunch of friends just about some of these seismic shifts within comics and how they relate to big...

Hey guys, it's Scott. I'm gonna try something a little bit different with this post, and I'm going to use it as a template going forward. What I've realized is that people want a few different buckets of things from me in this newsletter. And bear with me, because I'm still learning how to use this, and I love it—spending a little less time on social media and coming over here has allowed me to en...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It is Monday the 29th. I can't believe it's almost December. But it's been too long since I've had a chance to connect with you guys. I know there's been a bunch of news that we put out that we’re finally able to talk about in the last couple of weeks. First thing was the Nocterra announcement . Crazy excited about this and finally able to talk about it. Nocterra got optioned...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Tuesday, November 16. So, big week over here, we've got Clear #2 out today from Francis Manapul and me with Deron Bennett doing letters. This book is the one that's kind of the most about this moment, the most raw and urgent of all the ones we're doing it Best Jackett. So, I really hope you'll pick it up. Francis is doing next level work. Again, it's free if you have Pri...

Hey guys, it's Scott. Tuesday morning, November 9th. Really big day for us. We Have Demons #2 comes out. It's the series co-created by brother Greg Capullo and me, and it features Jon Glapion from our Batman run on inks, Dave McCaig from American Vampire on colors, and Tom Napolitono , who did tons of stuff with me at DC on letters, with Will Dennis editing. So, it's the second of three issues for...

Hey guys, it's Scott. I just wanted to say thank you so much for making the mini-class we did Tuesday night so much fun and a big hit. I want to do more of those now, actually. Just sort of loose and a little bit more freeform, a little bit more intimate extensions of the subjects that we talk about in Comic Writing 101. If you liked it, or you you like watching it in the archive, and you want me...

That was really fun! Hope you all enjoyed our mini-class on characterization. For those who missed it, the full audio from the session is embedded in this post, and here’s a full video as well! Again, I’m really excited to meet up for our next class, which is gonna be on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 9:15pm EST. Chip Zdarsky ’s gonna be a guest speaker, and we’ll be talking character arcs using examples f...

Hey guys, it’s Scott on this rainy Tuesday morning here on the East Coast. So, I'm so excited about this week. First up, for anybody in Comic Writing 101, or anyone who's interested in taking the class, we've got a really special session this week—we have Donny Cates , my friend and an incredible writer, coming on to discuss characterization with us. That's live 9pm EST from my local shop, 4th Wor...

Hey guys, it's Scott. So, huge , huge day over here. Release day for Night of the Ghoul , the third book from our Best Jackett Press line with comiXology Originals. We Have Demons was two weeks ago, Clear was one week ago, and now here's our third— Night of the Ghoul with Francesco Francavilla , one of my close friends and one of the best artists in the industry. I couldn't be prouder of this book...

Hey guys, it's Scott. And I am back from New York Comic Con, feeling a little bit worse for wear but incredibly happy. It was a fantastic con. Some highlights from it were getting to finally see brother Greg Capullo again, give him a hug after two years of not getting to see each other, and sit together and have a drink and catch up face to face. It's a strange thing with him and Tony Daniel , als...

Hey guys, it's Scott. And I just want to apologize for the lateness with this newsletter. I wanted to do a quick thing about conventions because today is New York Comic Con. Yesterday it started, but today is my first day there. And it's the first convention I'm going to since the pandemic, so, almost two years. And it got me thinking a lot about some advice that I've gotten over the years about c...

Hey guys, it's Scott. I can't believe it, it's finally launch day for our line of books coming out from comiXology Originals. Today my very first creator owned book with Greg Capullo , after 10 years of working together, comes out. It's called We Have Demons . And it's kind of the culmination of everything we've been working on for the last decade. But it's something that we actually co-own and th...

Hey guys, It's Scott, and I am freshly back from Legoland with the family, which was a trip. It's a great place, by the way. It's mostly outdoors and they have Lego models of cities and landmarks from around the world. They got a great sense of humor about themselves, it's a good place for the kids to run around. So, fully endorsed. And I actually was the first person ever in the history of the pa...
