Our Best Jackett

Hey guys, it's Scott. It is Halloween. It is Monday, October 31st. And I'm sorry I didn't do a post on Friday, but like I told you, we came back from Disney with the wheels off on this one with a couple of us sick and all kinds of stuff due for the kids, and so it was a bit of a mess. And getting ready for Halloween was equally messy. We were that family that was in Spirit of Halloween at, like, 7...

Hey guys, it’s Scott. It's Tuesday, October 25th and I'm just back from Florida (late last night at 2:00 in the morning), so I am jet lagged yet again. But the trip was worth it, we went down there for family reasons and to visit Jack (our 15 year-old)’s best friend growing up, whose family moved down there when the boys were about eight/nine years old and they've stayed in touch and stayed very c...

Hey guys, it's Scott. And I just wanted to make a short post to let you know about something that I think is just amazing . My buddy, and I think the best writer on the stands right now, James Tynion IV , has teamed up with Elsa Charretier and PK Colinet to make a short live-action horror film on Kickstarter . It's called Room Service . It's going to be unbelievable. He told me about it a long tim...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It is Wednesday, September 27, and as you can probably tell from my voice, I got back very late last night from Memphis Comic Expo after a couple canceled flights, but it was completely worth it. I had a blast. I'll talk a little bit more about it in a minute, but first I just wanted to mention a couple exciting things we have going on at Best Jackett right now. Yesterday on...

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit bestjackettpress.substack.com [Sorry about the duplicate post from yesterday, that was an earlier draft that you can safely ignore! - Ty] Hey guys, it's Scott. It is Friday, September 9th, if we can get this post in today. And I'm really sorry for the delay between the last post and this one, it's just that we've been getting our boys b...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Tuesday, August 30, and I can't believe summer's over (or almost over for those of you still clinging to the last days of sunshine). I have one kid who is just in his second day of 10th grade, which I can't believe—he's a real teenager, and then another kid who is inside desperately finishing all the reading he was supposed to do for school over the summer and didn't wan...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It’s Tuesday, August 17, the day after the 45th anniversary of the supposed passing of Elvis Presley, which I celebrate. I used to go to Elvis Week all the time, I can talk about that in a second for no reason other than my own enjoyment. But before I do, I just wanted to say we have two books I'm really proud of out today, the first— Dark Spaces: Wildfire #2 from IDW. It's m...

Hey guys, it's Scott. I am back from Ireland and I had such a good time over there. I'll tell you about it in a minute, but first allow me to shill, please, because I am really genuinely excited and thrilled and over the moon about what we're planning for our second year at Best Jackett. So you guys are clear, when we signed up for Substack to do Best Jackett, we didn't want to do comics, we wante...

Hey, guys, it's Scott. And as you can tell from my voice, I am just back from San Diego and I wanted to do a bigger post. I really wanted to do something where I kind of took you with me and posted throughout the day, but it's just impossible. I thought I could do it, but Tyler and I both really hunkered down and made an effort and it was just too much. I'm really sorry, but I'm gonna have Ty post...

*Apologies for the delay, it took a bit to finalize the SDCC schedule!* Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Tuesday, July 12, the week before San Diego Comic Con, the first in San Diego since 2019, so you can feel the anxiety and excitement, I think, all across the comic world. I'm going to be there from Tuesday through early Sunday, so there are plenty of chances to come say hi if you're going, and if you...

Hey, guys, it's Scott. It's Wednesday, July 6, and we have so much going on over here at Best Jackett in the next couple of weeks, so I just wanted to give you a quick primer. I can't even wrap my head around it and I'm a little bit overwhelmed, but I'm very excited. So a week from today, on the 13th, we have the first issue of Dark Spaces: Wildfire coming out. It's co-created with Hayden Sherman...

Hey guys, it's Scott. You're gonna have to forgive the noise. I am officially stuck in Seattle. Our flight has been canceled twice on the way back from our vacation, so we're desperately scrambling to try and get these little monsters home. This is the second day in a row we're caught in this hotel and terrible maelstrom of cancellations of flights and all of that stuff, so it’s our payback for ta...

[Apologies for the audio quality, I’m in a very noisy part of Hawaii that made this episode a real pain for sound edits] Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Tuesday, June 21. I am away on vacation with my family in Hawaii, which is amazing . Big news—this week, the finale of our second arc on Nocterra comes out, Nocterra #11. It has one of the biggest twists of the series, something we've been building to...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Tuesday the 14th and it's a really big week over here for Best Jackett! First, we have Undiscovered Country: Destiny Man #1. It's an Undiscovered Country special that gives the whole secret origin of our big bad guy and fan favorite, The Destiny Man. It's a bottle issue, so if you’ve not been reading the series, you can pick it up and get a sense of what we're all about...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It is Wednesday, June 8, and I'm getting so excited for our class next week that we will do from 4th World Comics on all the kinds of mistakes you don't want to make in comics, so it should be fun! I'll try and invite some guests to also tell horror stories and so on. But we’ll take a lot of your questions about things that you might do wrong, things that you are worried have...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Tuesday. It's the last day of May and it is a huge day for us over here at Best Jackett. We have two massive books out this week, one digitally and one in print. The first one is Clear #6 , the finale to our first arc. Clear is a series I'm doing with Francis Manapul, one of my closest and longtime friends and one of the best artists in all of comics, and it imagines a f...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Thursday, May 26. I just wanted to do a post about a topic that's been on my mind for a while, and then sort of address a couple other things at the end of the post. But one thing that I was always told as a creator coming in was that you have to be one of three things to succeed in this business—you have to be good at what you do (you have to be like a good writer, a go...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Tuesday, May 24, and I'm really glad a lot of you guys enjoyed the paid post about conventions . I'm really excited about convention season. It was announced I'll be at San Diego Comic Con , I'll be there the whole time. We're gonna be doing a lot of stuff for our second wave of comiXology/Dark Horse releases. I have a book coming out with IDW called Wildfires with the g...

So before we get started, two big things. First, as paid subscribers, your deadline to send me a book...

Hey guys, it’s Scott. It's Tuesday and I am very excited for this week. We are doing our Comic Writing 101 class tomorrow night, Wednesday, straight from 4th World Comics. It's going to be a blast! Get your mind off all the craziness and horrors of the world. But the topic this week is going to be pitching . So we're going to be talking with Will Dennis, who was the head editor at Vertigo at DC Co...

Hey guys, it's Scott. And I was going to do something today about Disney and about this kind of ride that we kept experiencing. All their new rides seem to be this really cool and fascinating combination of physical, old school attractions that are black box rides with huge sets and then also big simulator components, big 3D movies and stuff like that. And it's this really interesting blend of ele...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It's Wednesday (New Comic Book Day), and in that spirit, I thought I'd spend a little bit of time highlighting a few books, at least, that I hope you'll go and check out. Before I get to it, We have Nocterra #9 out today by me, co-creator Tony Daniel , and our incredible team. If you're not reading the series, it's about a darkness that falls over the Earth and changes every...

Hey guys, it's Scott. It is Tuesday in April. Wow, how did that happen? I am back. I'm fully recharged after the trip with my son, and the writers room for Wytches is over. Now we just wait on pins and needles to see if the show gets greenlit. Really, everybody, please send your good thoughts to Elvis or anyone that you revere to make this happen for us, because I really think it will be something...

Continued from Wednesday’s post on my foundational experiences with Joker in media: So that was brewing in my head as the DNA of my Joker if I ever got a chance to write Joker or work with the character. He was going to be the devil, he was going to be the sort of snake-like thing that sees you, knows exactly what you're afraid of, and then becomes that thing to challenge you. The Batman Who Laugh...

Hey guys, it's Scott. I am back and completely jet lagged from my trip with Jack, our 15 year old, out to Colorado. I'm not going to get too into it because I want to talk Joker, but it was it was amazing. With a teenager, a lot of our interactions are “come on Dad, get off my back!” and me being like “if you just apply yourself…” and all of those things. We're close, but it's hard with a 15 year...
