Native Art Voices of the Four Corners

On this month's episode of Native Art Voices, guest artist Cody Todacheene is joined in the studio by host Venaya Yazzie. Todacheene is a local pencil & visual artist, often incorporating cinematographic elements into his works. He describes his pieces as "dark" utilizing dramatic shifts in lighting to better frame his subject.

Zane Lee - A Navajo Lapidary artist from Farmington, NM and current San Juan College student. Zane is an artist who works with mineral stones, who shapes them and creates jewelry using both new and old techniques of Southwest tribal people.

Gabriel is a Navajo from Farmington, New Mexico and is also a San Juan College student. As a child, Gabriel would observe his grandmother as she would be knitting in their home, and that is the beginning of his interest with the craft of knitting. Gabriel creates wonderful characters and animals and insects using knitting techniques. He sells and shows his work at area craft shows and markets.

Gary Bernally is a 2-D Navajo artist and Vietnam Veteran who lives in Shiprock, NM but is originally from Arizona.  Gary bases his artwork on the history of the Navajo People, the American Indian Relocation Program, Indian Activism, the occupation of Alcatraz and issues of cultural stereotypes of Native people in the Four Corners area.  His colored pencil art images are based on social commentary...

Breydon Othole is an acrylic painter from Zuni New Mexico. He specializes in creating complex cultural works of every day life within the pueblos. He is a skilled painter having many of his works displayed in the "Ancestral Rich Treasures of Zuni Cooperative Gallery."

 Danielle Burbank is a local writer from the Farmington community but is originally from Crystal, New Mexico. She is a Navajo woman who wrote a book about the Navajo Code Takers for the young readers. She is a descendent of a Navajo and wrote this book as a way of teaching the youth about the efforts that these men did in World War II. 

Eugene Joe b. 1951 is a Navajo sand artist from Tó, or Shiprock, NM. He is a descendant of a family of traditional Navajo sand painters.  Since 1963 he has been using sand in a contemporary form with modern colorful iconography. Eugene also works in the reservation schools mentoring and teaching students Art.

Janet Yazzie is a Navajo painter from the Arizona region of the Navajo nation. She is a contemporary painter, using bright acrylic hues to create landscapes and the modern life of Navajo people.

  Diné silversmith. Coeburn Palmer is from Fruitland, NM but is originally fyy try on the eastern region of the Navajoland at Whitrock, NM. He specializes in “traditional” techniques and aspects in his prcoss of Navajo silversmithing. As an emerging Diné artist Coeburn is rooted in his Diné roots for inspiration of his jewelry designs.

Monique Holiday is a Diné (Navajo) artist and is from the Farmington area. She is an alumnus of the Institute of American Indian arts in Santa Fe New Mexico. She is a painter who works primarily in acrylics. She depicts the Navajo culture via the women of her community.

Elmer C. Yazzie is a Navajo Fine Art painter and a U.S. Vietnam Army Veteran.  He is from the Navajo Nation and resides in Shiprock, New Mexico with his family. He is an alumnus of the Institute of American Indian Arts!

Venaya Yazzie is joined by Nate Nez! Nate Nez is a Navajo artist from the Navajo Nation and resides in Albuquerque, NM and is alumnus of the University of New Mexico with a B.A. in Art.  He is an Army veteran of the 2003 Iraqi War.  His art is in the field of paintings and mural art.

Venaya Yazzie is joined by AJ Begay! AJ Begay is a member of the eastern Navajo reservation originally from Nageezi, New Mexico. She is a Army Veteran of the late 1990s. She served as an 82 Charlie as a Field Artillery Surveyor.
