My intention every day is to wake up thinking of something I am grateful for and to go to sleep at night with the same feeling. There are a lot of sights in nature that look scary at first, like icicles hanging off the eaves. They look like monster fangs ready to take a bite out of the house. There are many sights that can play tricks on our eyes and minds. Life can be scary in many ways. Our maple trees are being tapped this year, and I always love to watch the process. The term “sappy” relates to the emotions we experience in life when they flow through us like the sap flows in the trees in the spring. I am always watching for signs, and when I saw the frozen heart in the brook with a layer of leaves on its icy bottom, I realized that it was another sign of coming spring weather. The sun is getting higher in the sky every day, warming the air and the icicles on the edge of the roof which are dripping. March 1 is the first day of meteorological spring. It is a great time to enjoy the last few weeks of the winter season with the increasing daylight and warming temperatures. It seems as though I have had a lot to keep track of lately. I am watching squirrel tracks leading to the old maple tree where, when the sap is running, they chew on the limbs to sip the sweet liquid. The bird feeders are all hung about a foot from our windows, giving us wonderful opportunities to observe the birds that come for the food. I can tell without even looking when the woodpeckers are gathering suet because the sound is like a knock at the door. As I looked out the window into the woods, I spotted two bald eagles facing each other on a tree. Looking closer I realized it was two snowcapped burls. I often see things in Nature that are not what I thought. The same thing happens in life. With all the ice and snow that has accumulated on roofs and trees it is very important to keep watch for hazards from above, demonstrated by the large ice chunks by our front door. Had we been standing under them, they could have caused serious injury. The weather forecast was for a blizzard covering a good part of New England, and our local school was cancelled. However, we woke up to a snowless view of the mountains while the southern part of the state got a snowstorm. In life we have choices in how we deal with predictions beyond the weather. Last night the sunset was very red. According to the old saying, “Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailor’s delight,” the morning was supposed to be fair weather. We received six inches of snow overnight and are now getting ready for another storm due tomorrow. The pointed icicle lodged into a snowbank reminded me that Nature wants me to make a point about making points. I think that mindfulness is important. The way a point is made can make a big difference in the way it is accepted. I really enjoy my coffee, but I realized I was probably drinking too much, and some friends suggested drinking white pine needle tea for positive health results. So, I went out back, away from any pollution, and gathered some pine.
