As we approach the midpoint of April I have been anticipating warmer weather. Instead, winter returned. I chose to focus on its beauty. When a mature tree is uprooted by the wind or snow or machinery, it is fascinating to discover what the roots have covered up. History is filled with finds from overgrown roots. The oak trees dropped a lot of acorns last fall and winter. Now they are food for wildlife and seed for future oak trees. If the land was cleared, there would be no trees to regenerate the land. As much as I want winter to be over, it’s not over until the last of the snow has fallen, and that could be a month or more away. In life there are many things that we wish were over but have not ended yet. BLUEBIRDS. After we had created the Lupine Field, it was suggested we include bird houses for bluebirds in our forestry plan. Our son built and installed some, and the bluebirds came. Recently I was able to visit the field of my dreams for the first time this spring. I thought back to when the field was just woods and the different processes it has been through. Soon it will become a beautiful Lupine Field where I still dream of a positive future. The time has come to close the upper trail parking lot for mud season. It seems like this event is getting longer each year with the ups and downs of the weather. Years ago, we salvaged some ramps from portable classrooms at the local school and eventually used one of them to make a bridge over the drainage “ditch” that goes through the Ormond Gardens to keep the spring runoff away from the Center’s foundation. A small flock of turkeys held a meeting on the front lawn as the winds of March still linger. Just like life, the seasons have a lot of ups and downs. I wonder if April is going to fool us into thinking spring has really arrived, or will winter come back again? I also wonder if we fool ourselves about our life purpose. The last few days of March have been wet snow turning to icy rain creating a very slippery slope on the driveway. It was wise to just stay put. I think of the times in life when we are tempted to venture onto slippery slopes, but our intuition tells us not to. As I was admiring some birch trees, I saw a mossy heart on the bark of one of them. To me, a heart shape is a sign that I am not alone. I believe we all get signs that appear in different forms, and yours may be totally different from mine. The birch trees along our driveway appear to have a lot of red in their bark. We have white, yellow, and grey birches, and the red birch will change color to white as the new bark matures. Recently, someone spotted a very unique, textured stone in the parking lot. They paused, picked it up, and brought it into the Center. It was a special moment that could easily have been missed. It seems my life is the story of working on something until I can’t do it any better at that moment, so I am always done and never finished. That is the story of winter this year. Just as the winter season was about over, we got hit with a snowstorm dropping six inches of new powder on the mountainside. At the same time, despite the inconvenience, there is a silver lining to this, often called “poor man’s fertilizer”. The earth needs more moisture. I have noticed that in the winter male yellow finches look nearly the same as the females. Now they are beginning to change color into their brilliant yellow, just in time for the mating season. In life, many people live a colorless existence without heart-based compassion. This is a wonderful time of year to regain the colors of life, discovering them again for the first time. www.michaelhathaway...

As we approach the spring growing season most of the trees appear ready to produce new leaf buds. The lone exception here in the mountains is the beech trees that are the last to release their old leaves. A lot of people have old habits that hang on beyond their time. I recently spotted the first robin of the spring on our front lawn. It is the completion of another seasonal ritual for me, and my heart is so grateful for its return. I often carry a camera with me when I am outside to have ready in case something captures my attention. It is my way of pausing and taking in the moment. Finally, the calendar says Spring. It was a long winter for me, and now, even though we may have more snow, the worst of the cold is behind us. Sometimes life seems to move so slowly and sometimes it moves rapidly. The little brook that flows by my windows is now filled with the melting snows of winter and is rushing onward towards the great ocean beyond. I can imagine the experiences a drop of water is having on its journey. Another sign of spring is the chipmunk sticking its head up in the center of our millstone and chipping away. The warmer weather is chipping away at the snow cover and people always have the opportunity to chip away at accomplishments rather than taking on too much at once.
