As the fall foliage is reaching its peak and the nights are getting longer, the feel of summer is winding down. The cooler and leafless days of autumn are setting in. The hills are alive with the colors of fall foliage. People flock into nature during the couple of weeks the leaves are at their peak. I usually take a hike on the Center trails from the top of the mountain while others like to make the climb up from the Center’s parking lot. Our goal is to make it possible for everyone to experience nature and the beautiful views. The foliage here is now at its peak. Nature is putting on an amazing show. People often strive to achieve peak performance in sports, as well as the arts and other areas where they can measure success in their lives. There is something about the fall season and travelling country roads that brings me back in time. I imagine what it might have been like to travel them a hundred years ago. For some reason, the leaves on our trees are some of the last to change, while others across the valley are almost at peak foliage. The calendar has changed to October as the days rush by. According to the news the beautiful sunset we recently experienced was caused by two hurricanes off the coast of Florida and the Carolinas. We are constantly being affected by weather, but also situations in our lives affect us almost daily. A blanket of fog covered the lake when we awoke at the family cottage. The small island close to the foot of the lake seemed to be floating in the water creating a peaceful scene. I do not usually think of birch bark having any red color, but I recently noticed some. I believe it is a time when the old bark is giving way to the new growth of the tree. There are a lot of things that we can miss in life when our mind is not taking in all that is happening around us. Most of the wildflowers, sometimes called weeds, have gone to seed here on the mountainside. Still, many of their arrangements, before they fly in the wind, are beautiful. I enjoy them all season long. The fibrous seeds in the milkweed pods are now setting sail in the winds of autumn. Many of them will find fertile soil for new milkweed to grow next spring. The landscape here in the mountains has experienced a major drought this summer. Finally, a little payment on that debt has been delivered with some drops of liquid gold. It is very easy in life to become burdened down with many kinds of debt. I was recently given a sturdy portable reclining chair that I could take outside to relax in nature for a few moments. It is a wonderful way to rejuvenate my mind and connect with my Soul. The red winterberries have ripened and are waiting to make their full presence known when the fall foliage has disappeared. Then they will stand out against a bleak late autumn landscape. I watched a male turkey trying to herd his flock and from the way he was all frumpled up, it apparently wasn’t going very well. I think of people like that when things aren’t going the way they want them to. We are now officially entering the fall season. The temperatures will soon fall to the freezing point, and the leaves will fall from the trees. A tiny clump of blue flowers amongst dried brown grass and ferns reminded me that something doesn’t have to be big to stand out in the world. There are people who go about their daily lives with a positive attitude doing small acts of kindness that may overlooked. The mountains surrounding the valley are well rounded from the mile-high ice that covered the land during the ice age. As the earth warmed, the melting ice rounded the jagged peaks and reshaped the landscape. There is something about the sky that is mesmerizing, especially when the clouds are drifting over the mountains. When I decided to create a memorial meditation spot just above the Ormond Gardens, it turned out to be a bigger project then I first thought. A few years ago, I cleaned up a small area that was covered with wood debris. Now the goldenrod has taken hold and is welcomed by insects searching for the last drops of nectar before frost sets in. Of course, there are still invasive plants which would like to take over. The same is true in people’s minds. I saw the first pumpkin person to welcome in the fall season standing silently outside the local Historical Society. Soon the valley will be invaded with many more outside businesses and private homes.
