As followers of Jesus, it can be difficult to discern what role we are meant to play in society, politics, and the like. The parable of salt and light provides great insight here. Like salt, we are called to preserve and enhance life around us. As light, we are to dispel darkness and reflect the beauty of Christ to the world around us.

Prayer is one of the simplest spiritual disciplines for us to practice, yet at the same time one of the most difficult. Jesus used a parable of two men to show the right posture for approaching God. It wasn’t the religious elite who knew all the right things to say, but the humble sinner who knew the judgement he deserved. 

Materialism is an idol that plagues the Western church today. Thankfully Jesus told a parable about a rich man with lofty goals to accumulate wealth. The foolish man primarily focused on himself and was neglectful towards God. Jesus reveals to us the folly in such an approach to life and God.

As Christians we know we are supposed to read the Bible. It claims to be living and active, but sometimes our experience with the Word doesn’t fit that description. Jesus’s teaching on the Sower provides a spiritual lens through which we can better understand all of this. His explicit interpretation of the parable provides us a good launching point for our next series.

In this final scene we witness the brutal execution of Jesus. He’s beaten, mocked, nailed to a cross, and left to die. Incredibly, he met repeated insults with gentle blessings. Enduring tremendous pain in every form, he remained under controlled. Here in the darkest moment of all of history we see the gentle Lamb of God bearing the sins of the world.

Just as predicted, Peter denies his relationship to Jesus three times. The next scene Mark provides is Jesus with the Roman Governor Pilate. Unlike Peter, He faithfully acknowledges his identity and embraces the death sentence it carries. In a moment that many would plead the fifth, Jesus stands resolute as the faithful lamb of God.

Leading an armed crowd, Judas approaches Jesus and greets him with a kiss. Chaos ensues as Jesus is forcibly arrested and Peter cuts off a man’s ear. Instead of matching the violence of the moment, Jesus responds with rational words. In a moment of tremendous betrayal, we see Jesus respond in kindness.

After dinner Jesus and the twelve go to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. In a moment when Jesus needed encouragement and support, his friends repeatedly fall asleep on him. Instead of revoking their disciple cards, he calls them to persist in prayer and continue with him. Firm and consistent, we see Jesus model a patience with his men that we should take note of.

Immediately following such a tense moment, we see Jesus and his disciples singing a worship song to God. Here we will see joy and peace that surpasses understanding.

After their father’s passing, Joseph’s brothers fear that he will deal harshly with them. On the contrary, Joseph promises to provide for them and their children. He sees that the hand of God had been working throughout his life and trusts it will continue. This week we explore how trusting our sovereign God leads to peace and generosity.

After pronouncing blessings on each of his twelve sons, Jacob makes his final burial requests. As his father passes, Joseph throws himself on him and weeps sorrowfully. This week we explore the love shared between a good father and a righteous son; how one man can finish strong while another carries on.

Joseph finally reveals his identity to his brothers and they are terrified. He makes it clear to them that though they are the ones that sold him into slavery, it was ultimately God who sent him to Egypt. Joseph forgives his brothers and extends to them the grace of God. This week we see the healing power of forgiveness.

During a severe famine, Joseph’s brothers travel to Egypt to buy food. This provides an opportunity for him to test them and see if they will act righteously. The same brothers who betrayed him are given the opportunity to make a different choice. This week we process how the Lord uses testing to reveal the hearts of men.

Two years after Joseph interpreted dreams for prisoners, he’s asked to interpret the dreams of Pharaoh. His gifting earns him a release from prison and a job as head over all of Egypt. Joseph’s life looks like a roller coaster of extreme highs and lows. This week we’ll investigate how God uses everything for our good and His glory.

Joseph notices that two fellow prisoners are upset, so he helps by interpreting their dreams. One is restored to his former position in Pharaoh’s court and the other is executed. This week we see that despite the difficulty of his own situation, Joseph still had a heart to invest in others.

God gives Joseph favor in the eyes of Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials. Potiphar’s wife takes notice of Joseph and attempts to seduce him. He avoids sinning but gets thrown into prison anyways. This week we acknowledge that obedience to God will always cost us something.

Joseph’s father sends him out to the pastures to check on his brothers. They see him coming and plot against him. Joseph ends up beaten, humiliated, and sold off into slavery. This week we’ll wrestle with why God allows his children to suffer.
