The foundation of a home determines its ability to endure the test of time. Jesus taught that our lives are the same way. In his parable of the wise and foolish builders we see how easily one’s life can be built on unstable ground. When we mess up, we are quick to receive forgiveness. When someone offends or hurts us, our tendency is to force them to earn our forgiveness. It’s easy to love people who share your beliefs, make your life easier, and are a joy to be around. But what about people who don’t fit this description? How do we love people who hold different religious positions, are impossible to please, or have nothing to offer you? How should we interact with them, if at all? The parable of the Good Samaritan decisively answers that question.

As we eagerly wait for Jesus’s return, He expects our lives to be marked by Gospel urgency and wise stewardship. This week’s parable pictures three servants who are entrusted with different amounts of resources. As we’ll see, what we do with what’s been given to us matters greatly to the Lord. 

Prayer is one of the simplest spiritual disciplines for us to practice, yet at the same time one of the most difficult. Jesus used a parable of two men to show the right posture for approaching God. It wasn’t the religious elite who knew all the right things to say, but the humble sinner who knew the judgement he deserved.
