Much detail about the priestly garments and the consecration of the priests and all items used in worship

Detailed instructions are provided for building the tabernacle and each item inside it. Clearly, God cares about the details and about beauty, and He expects us to give of the beautiful things He gives us to use in worship.

More laws are detailed for the Israelites, along with commands to celebrate festival, then the people are consecrated and the elders see God!

God speaks to the Israelites at Mount Sinai and the people tremble in fear. God gives them the Ten Commandments and begins to clarify specific laws and decrees, such as these laws regarding injuries and slaves.

After many miraculous events, God provides manna and quail for the Israelites, yet they continue to grumble and complain and fail to always follow God’s instructions. Moses realizes that he cannot lead the people by himself, but he needs others to support and help him. Sometimes wise relatives visiting from a distance can help us recognize our needs and evaluate how best to meet them.

God again delivers the Israelites from the Egyptians by parting the Red Sea.

God’s mighty power is displayed through the final plague on the Egyptians. Instructions for Passover are given and the Israelites leave Egypt.

Moses and Aaron go before Pharaoh and God sends the plagues on Egypt. Water to blood, frogs, gnats, livestock killed, boils, and hail... but still Pharaoh rejects God.

Exodus 4-6 Moses complains to God about his inability to speak, then Aaron is included as they go speak to the Israelites and to Pharaoh.

A new generation of Israelites becomes numerous. A new Pharaoh oppresses them, and they cry out to God, who raises up Moses to deliver them.

Israel gives his blessing before he dies, and Joseph also dies as we conclude the book of Genesis.

Jacob (Israel) moves from Canaan to Goshen with all he owns. The famine is severe and Pharaoh acquires all the land, except that of the priests.

Joseph reveals his true identity.

Joseph interprets Pharoah’s dream and is restored to a position of prominence. Pharaoh’s dream comes true, and Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt for food.

Some adult situations arise as Tamar is mistreated, Joseph flees from Potiphar’s wife and her pursuits, and Joseph is forgotten after he interprets the dreams of the cupbearer and baker.

The family drama continues. Jacob and Esau separate and their descendants are listed. Jacob becomes Israel and his descendants are listed. Joseph has dreams which make his brothers angry, and they sell him as a slave.

Jacob returns to his brother Esau, wondering if he will be accepted. The men of Shechem wish to intermarry, but it doesn’t end well for them.

Jacob increases his flocks and his household and leaves to return to his father.

Rebekah helps Jacob steal his brother’s blessing, Jacob flees to Laban, receives God’s blessing, marries Leah and Rachel and has children.

Genesis 25-26 Esau sells his birthright for a cup of stew, Isaac and Rebekah act similarly to Abraham and Sarah, Isaac finds room for his people

Genesis 22-24 A beautiful passage that demonstrates God’s abundant provision and Abraham’s faithful obedience. Abraham is obedient to sacrifice Isaac, but God provides a ram instead. Abraham’s wife Sarah dies and Abraham seeks a wife for his only son Isaac. He trusts that God will provide and God does provide even before the prayer is spoken.

God dealt differently with Abraham and Lot and others in the Old Testament, and it can be difficult to understand the reason for some events that have been recorded for us in this passage.

Genesis 16-18 Abram becomes Abraham and Sarai becomes Sarah, Hagar conceives and Ishmael is born, none were found righteous in Sodom and Gomorrah. How good to know that God hears our cries and uses us in spite of our weaknesses.

Abram and Lot and Sarai set out to a new land.

Job 40-42 Today we finish the book of Job. We read God’s description of great creatures, probably what we know of as dinosaurs, and the repentance that comes when God speaks to Job and his friends. Job’s wealth is restored in double measure and we have a happy ending to Job’s story.
