Generations (Talking 'bout My Sports...)

The episode you have all been waiting for. The debate on Intangibles. Steve is adamant there are things that cannot be measured, yet he tees it up so easily for me to dispute. Steve wants mystery and not knowing. I want probabilities to be in my favor. It gets heated.

The NBA Finals are upon us. Steve and I discuss the NBA Finals over the generations. At the end, we discuss this year's finals. Why are the games so spaced out? Is it because the Conference Finals went 4 - 1 and 4 - 0? You know I bring up the Warriors of the past and Steve has to go to his last '60's early '70's bag of tricks.

With recent passing of Bill Walton, we wanted to look at his career and how it changed over the generations. Steve remembers the UCLA Walton. The 2x dominant NCAA Champion. He remembers the oft-injured but dominant Walton of the Dr Jack Ramsay Blazers--along with Maurice Lucas. Steve and I have talked about the Dynasties over the Generations. This one is the opposite. In light of the Denver Nuggets going down, we discuss the ingredients to be a repeat Champion and a Dynasty. Oh, and I go from Jim Everett apologist to the Karl-Anthony Towns Apologist.

Steve and I discuss how jealousy transcends generations and sports. We discuss different players, teams, and the times. Caitlyn Clark, Diana Taurasi, Dawn Staley, Kareem, Calvin Murphy, Bill Russell, Will Clark, Franco Harris, and Jim Brown all mentioned.

Watching the NBA playoffs this week, I was regaled with the defensive theater that is Luka Doncic. This made me think of the Generations of Floppers, which led to the foulers, and ultimately the tough guys. Steve and I explore the change over the years and the usual suspects that get put in each category.

Steve and I discuss series comebacks. With the NBA playoffs in full swing, we discuss which teams currently have a shot at coming back, but we dive deep into all-time comebacks. Steve and I discuss the idea of more arm surgeries in baseball today versus over the generations. Steve postulates that pitching and pitchers are fungible and say the Warrior Dynasty is Over! I debate the book on Steph isn't over yet and make a shocking observation on a current young player.

Steve and I discuss the explosion of Women's Basketball of late. We discuss how it is refreshing and exciting and how this is different over the Generations. We explore how and why it has changed. Then, the GOAT discussion from the comments by Dawn Staley in reference to Caitlyn Clark.

The Kinks, then Van Halen questioned, "Where have all the good times gone?" Steve ponders where the big men have gone. Specifically, where the post players have gone. In my response, I use math...again. It's all math. It's always been math. But, there skill has changed too.

We discuss gambling again. Pete Rose rears his ugly head. March Madness was discussed recently but now we have something to reference from the first couple of rounds. The NBA season is starting. Well, ish. My Shohei take is kind of boring.

Lighter topic this week. Or, maybe not so much. Sometimes you never know if things are going to get cynical or political. But, hopefully, entertaining no matter. Steve and I discuss how uniforms have changed over the Generations and how numbers have impacted the game or players as well. Spoiler Alert: Steve hates the Astro's "rainbow" uniforms.

Steve and I discuss how owners and ownership of teams has changed over the Generations. With 51 years on this planet, I have been alive for all but 6 Super Bowls. I remember watching every Super Bowl starting with Steelers - Cowboys in 1976. I submit my theory on how pro sports players and their abilities to play more than one sport. Steve submits his theory why it is not as prevalent any longer.

Every sports fan loves a sports movie. Many are terrible. Many are terrible, but still somehow are good. Some are actually good. Steve and I discuss our favorite sports movies. I submit one movie is a sports movie if Die Hard is a Christmas movie. We celebrate the life of a recently passed actor in one of the funniest sports movies ever made.

Steve and I wax nostalgic about some of our favorite unsung players. The players that don't always get all the accolades or notoriety as some of their teammates, but are just as integral to the success of those teams. We discuss players like Henry Lawrence, Jose Uribe, David Eckstein, Larry Smith, and more.

Season 2 of Generations is here. We cranked out 26 full episodes last year. Starting the New Year talking about players that had a New Beginning somewhere else. Steve calls it new Latitudes, New Attitudes. Oh, and we finally announce the Listener Appreciation party details.
