"Instead of working through every hypothetical to try to get the perfect thing up front, find something that seems plausible. And try it with a commitment that we have to honor, that we come back to it and say, "Is this working?", and have that evolving thing happening? "Yeah, we got it on paper. But we didn't get it in, as you might say, 'people's hearts and minds'. We didn't get it in a way that shows up in people's behavior, or that results in compliance or support of whatever the thing was that we were working toward." "And so what we want to do is not be afraid of it, not run away from it. And also not drag them into the deep end of it. Or bring ours in with them. But to be curious and  check in. "Don't take away someone's coping strategy without giving them something else that works for them." Karen & Paul talk about working with people who are dealing with difficulty in ways that are causing problems for those around them.

"Starting to question assumptions about how things have to be when we settle in the new place and then seeing what other people's capacity for experimenting with those assumptions, I think, is an important place to start." Karen & Paul discuss making the most of change.

"We often hear, 'This is really great! And we can't, because we don't have everyone on board.'" Paul & Karen  talk about creating change by starting small – and without everyone.

"We tell ourselves a story about 'If I don't do this thing – or if I do this thing that I want to do – somebody else will be unhappy with me. And therefore, I don't have a choice, I have to do it.'" Paul & Karen discuss obligation, resentment, and reclaiming a sense of agency.
