Derek finishes the week by pointing us forward to the ultimate satisfaction which God has provided for man’s reborn spirit. We may go through afflictions here on Earth, but they are nothing compared to the glory we will experience when we are at last home with the Lord.

Derek speaks to situations where our enjoyment or value of the things of this life may have ended in disappointment, tragedy or frustration. God uses these events to remind us to keep a looser grip on the things of this world, but to hold fast to God and to the eternal.

In today’s study Derek looks at what happens when someone is reborn through receiving Jesus. God comes into our lives by His Spirit and rekindles that life of God which was born in us through creation. We get back in touch with eternity—and with eternal life.

Today Derek explains why there is an internal conflict in man. That is, we love things in this natural world, but all the while knowing there is something better. Taking a closer look at creation, we see that man has two sources: the dust from below, the Earth; and God’s in-breathed breath from above. That is what we yearn for—the eternal element.

In the first day of this study, Derek points out that eternity is an essential element of the nature of God. Eternity, by definition, denotes that which is outside of time or above time or beyond time—something that has no beginning and no end. God is an eternal being. Derek finishes this study on patience with five principles for growing patience in our lives. First, we recognize that patience is essential; second, we submit to God’s discipline; third, we learn to see God’s hand in frustrations that come our way. Fourth, whenever we fail in respect of patience, we confess it as sin and repent. And fifth, we cultivate a sensitivity to God’s timing.

In today’s teaching Derek takes a look at the lives of Abraham, Moses, and David. We will see how they were able to grow in patience. As we see their successes as well as their failures, we can learn from their experiences.

Raising Lazarus from the dead is the example Derek uses today to show us the value of waiting. If it was important for Jesus to wait—to get God’s direction before proceeding—imagine how important it is for us, too. Timing can be extremely crucial in all that we do if we want success.

Today Derek speaks about God’s patience. God waits—and doesn’t act on things immediately. God has a time for everything and knows when and how to deal with people. Using as examples of waiting, Derek examines the lives of Pharaoh and Paul. This brings out our need to be patient with other people.

In this week’s study, Derek focuses on patience and what the Bible has to say about it. He distinguishes between patience and perseverance in Scripture. Perseverance implies strength, effort, endurance, and pressing forward. Whereas patience is essentially waiting. Remember, God acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.

In finishing this study, Derek explains how Christ became a curse for us when He hung upon the cross. He exhausted every curse for each of us so we would not have to bear them. Then He gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the finished work of Christ on the cross and receive the blessings in our lives as a result.

Derek confronts us with a decision today; whether we will choose blessings or curses. Blessings come upon us when we hear God and obey what He says. Curses come from not hearing and obeying. It is up to you to make the decision which course to take in your life.

Derek reads from the words of Moses to the people of Israel as they were preparing to cross into the Promised Land. They could choose life and blessing or death and cursing; Moses advised them to choose life. Later, Jesus presents us with choice. Will we choose Jesus (and life), or will we choose Satan, the thief, who comes to steal, kill, and destroy? We each have that choice.

Today Derek looks at character trait of humility, which is the decision to humble yourself. God tells us to humble ourselves and then He will exalt us. Whatever our circumstances are, we have the ability to choose whether we will take the road to humility, as Jesus did, or lower ourselves by being prideful in whatever form it may take.

Derek continues this week on the necessity of making decisions. Today he looks at the importance of forgiving others so that we will be forgiven by God. If we do not forgive why should God to forgive us and answer our prayers? Remember that forgiveness is not based on feelings; it is based on obedience to God’s Word.
