Derek finishes this week by stressing the importance of responding to God when He speaks to you. Repeatedly ignoring or sidestepping His promptings can cause you to be rejected. This is not God’s will for you.

Today Derek makes the distinction between repentance and remorse. To repent means to change your mind (this is a decision), and then you must go in a different direction (this is the action you take). Remorse is an emotion, and not a decision. Repentance determines our destiny for time and eternity.

Derek teaches on making the decision to praise God in all circumstances, no matter whether we feel like it or not. Praise brings satisfaction to the ones who have made that willful decision. Have you decided to bless the Lord at all times and to have His praise continually in your mouth?

In today’s study Derek looks at two decisions made by David in Psalm 103. These decisions are to bless the Lord and to remember His benefits. “To bless the Lord” is to adopt a right attitude toward God—in humility, reverence, acknowledgment, and bowing. “To forget not” means we remember the blessings of the Lord; we focus our mind on the Lord’s benefits.

To begin this two-week study, Derek delves into the foundational difference of a person’s spiritual experience: is it based upon your will or your emotions? It is a person’s will that decides to serve God. Man is a three part being—made of spirit, soul, and body—and it is in the soul that makes decisions.

As Derek finishes this study, he shows us, from the book of Colossians, that all things of God are available to us in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the image of God and all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him. All that God has, has been provided for us in Christ, and it is through our understanding of the riches in Him that we receive of His fullness.

In looking at the first commandment, Derek asks, “Who (or what) is your God?” As Christians, we must be totally committed and loyal to God; He tolerates no rivals. We cannot love God and continue to love the world with its materialism, rebellion, sin, and self-pleasing. If God is in first place, your source, you will have a solid foundation.

Derek uses the experience of his wife, Lydia’s, death to expose us to the reality of this temporary life. Instead, we must hang on to the strength and truth of the eternal. We should be willing to give up what we have here in this life, trusting that God cares and has a plan for us. Just what is the gospel of the kingdom? Derek points out the need for the gospel message to be presented fully. He tells us the “good news” culminates in the kingship of Jesus coming into each person’s life. It is to be an inward kingdom consisting of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Derek continues his teaching this week on learning by living; by looking at some vital practical lessons he learned in serving God and His people. Today he emphasizes the importance of what we say with our mouths—whether we mean what we say, or not. Scripture makes it clear that we are responsible for what we say. Your words indicate what is in your heart.

One of the mental fortresses we battle is pride. Derek stresses that the essential condition for receiving the Word of God is humility. He shares that in the process of self-humbling we must put down pride and choose humility instead. As we do so in God’s sight, He will give us the grace to succeed.

We all have battles in our minds—in our thoughts. Our minds are at enmity with God, hostile to His Word, and need to be changed. Today Derek explains, through the Word and personal experience, how we must fight our way through discouragement, doubt, and fear to walk in victory in truth.

Derek takes the calling of God and extends it by showing us that we are to be servants. Even though that may entail suffering, we must first be servants of the Word and then servants of the people. If these are the other way round, it can lead to many problems. Nothing else can come before serving the Word of God.

Today Derek emphasizes that you receive your calling from God on the day when you are saved. He then challenges us to decide to do whatever it takes to find and fulfill that calling. We must make it our goal to put our calling first in our life, and as we do, we will find that other things fit into place.

In this new study, Derek shares with us the most important practical lessons about the life of faith he has learned from his experiences. He begins with his most outstanding message: God is faithful, and discusses how this theme runs throughout the Bible.

Derek finishes this study by pointing out that all nations will have the gospel preached to them—and that includes the Jewish people. At some point the full number of the Gentiles will be brought into the kingdom and the hardening of the Jewish hearts will end. That will open wide the door of salvation to the Jews. Derek shares one specific sign Jesus said would herald the end of the present age and His return in glory. That sign was the proclamation of the gospel of the kingdom to all nations in the whole world. It is Priority Number 1—to move out ahead of the forces of evil and carry out this task with great urgency.

Jesus said there would be signs taking place, which will lead up to the end times. Derek reveals how they are present even today. As we see these things happening, we are exhorted to be on the alert, guarding our hearts and praying so that we may be ready for that day.

Today Derek speaks about the bride who has made herself ready for Christ. She has clothed herself in fine linen, which are the righteous acts of the saints. We have been created in Christ Jesus for good works, each strand of which will make up our clothing. It is up to each one of us to seek the Lord about what He has for us to do.

Throughout the New Testament God’s requirements for holiness are nearly always linked with the anticipation of the Lord’s return. This is echoed by the exhortation of the writers of the New Testament. It is the strongest single motivation for holy living, and if we are truly motivated in that way, then we will live holy lives.

In today’s study Derek points out that all creation is looking forward to the return of Jesus when the sons of God will be revealed in all their glory. When Adam and Eve fell, creation was subjected to the circumstances of sin. But at Christ’s return, redemption will encompass all creation as well as man.

Derek points out that the return of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom is the only hope for suffering humanity. It is only the return of Jesus that will put an end to war, poverty, sickness, oppression, injustice, hatred, and more. Only His return will bring righteousness, peace, relief, and deliverance to the oppressed, sick, and suffering.

Today Derek looks at what Christ’s return will mean to Christians when we are finally all assembled together as His bride and His body. Derek gives a picture of the marriage of Jesus with His bride, the Church. The bride has made herself ready, and the universe is exulting. What a reason to long for His appearing!

For what reason should Christians be longing for Christ’s appearing? The first is that at His return our personal salvation will be completed. Our corruptible, dead bodies will be changed into glorified bodies, just like the glorified body of Jesus.

Derek begins this new study on the return of Jesus by first taking a closer look at those who are actually longing for His return. These are the ones who are eagerly awaiting that time when they will be given a crown of righteousness. Then Derek challenges us with this simple question: “Are you qualified?”
