The Silver Linings Playlist

There's never been a Palme d'Or given to not only the director but also the two leads of a film before 2013's Blue is the Warmest Colour , but there's rarely been a movie with as much power behind it like this one. Over the past decade, several articles detailing a mired production and testimonies of the troubling circumstances surrounding Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux&ap...

After a (way) too long hiatus from discussing Korean cinema, we're back talking about the great Park Chan-wook and the first in the Vengeance Trilogy with 2002's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance . The tonal shifts in this movie are gracefully done, the performances otherworldly, and the message troubling; all what you come to expect watching a Park film. Is there really anything positive we ca...

We're thinking about starting a new tradition around here for our Thanksgiving episode where each time we'll cover another Fast and Furious movie. We test this little experiment out this week by talking about this year's latest entry into this dumb-as-hell-yet-equally-entertaining franchise with Fast X . Jason Momoa seems to be the only one here that understood the assignment, and f...

It took 148 days this summer for the studios to give the WGA fair wages and protection against AI, but if you need an example of what can happen to a film during a writers' strike, look no further than 2008's Quantum of Solace . It's often cited as the most maligned James Bond film, but let us take you back for a proper revaluation as this one may be better than you remember. Great...

Rumor control! Here are the facts: even though Spooky Linings is officially behind us now, we couldn't let go of horror just yet. Alien³ is, unfortunately, not up to director David Fincher's standard, but we think there's a great movie in here that's begging to burst out. And given the possibilities of what this movie could have been, we got the best possible version. So shave...

It's no coincidence that we had five Spooky Linings episodes this season, and the titular character of our final outing this month loves the number 5. That's right: we're discussing the fantastic 2021 Candyman requel from Nia DaCosta. Is Candyman a malicious boogeyman or a ghostly Black Batman? This movie aims to get to the bottom of it - sort of. Fantastic performances, amazing vis...

Somehow, with over 160 episodes already in our back catalog, we still haven't covered a proper Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Well that serious infraction ends today as we're talking about none other than A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors . Nancy's back and so is Freddy in this classic slasher sequel that gifted us some great moments for this franchise (and some not-so-gre...

You know the schedule: first we dine, then we talk about 1989's Society ! If you've never heard of "the Shunting" before, there's not much we can do to prepare you for it. And for those that have witnessed it for themselves, it's impossible to forget. Plain and simple, this is an odd movie, but in all the best ways - part Chopping Mall levels of weirdness combined wit...

Spooky Linings continues this week on the show as we're exploring our Bodies Bodies Bodies . Is this Gen Z's very own Scream or just another try-hard horror flick? It's tough to say what this movie's longevity will be, but all we can say right now is that it's, at the very least, enjoyable. So grab your Xanax and put on your glow stick bracelets cause we're covering e...

With a new Exorcist movie getting a theatrical release this week, we thought there was no better way to kick off our Spooky Linings month than with a retrospective look at the only good sequel to the original. It's of course 1990's The Exorcist III . A slow burn, pseudo neo-noir film with a truly dreadful tone that is only hindered by its insistence at telling instead of showing. That be...

After a much needed break, we're rejuvenated, refreshed, and ready to kick off Season 7. And what better movie to be energized to discuss than one where the protagonist sits on a couch the whole time? In keeping with tradition, we're discussing yet another Aronofsky movie for our season premiere, and this time it's 2022's The Whale . A powerful yet divisive film from Aronofsky,...

We're closing up shop for the season, but not before talking about one of our favorite movies from the last few years. It's the "sometimes maligned, sometimes adored" Malignant from James Wan. A very divisive film that some audiences either didn't get, didn't have the time for, or simply didn't approve, but for those who embraced it, they found an absolute gem. A...

In our penultimate episode of the season, we're pulling up a chair to the table as we devour 2022’s The Menu . This sleek, stylish, and sophisticated tale of the elites getting what's coming to them has a rich layer of humor and terror that's worthy of your attention. So tuck that napkin into your shirt and grab your utensils as we crack open this great movie to talk about it all, a...

Somehow Paranormal Activity 2 was a huge success (at least in terms of box office revenue) despite being a dreadfully boring movie. That being said, this may be one of the funniest movies of 2010 - unintentionally, of course. We welcome returning guest Ashley McGlothren as we crack open this film to discuss it all: which fast food chain has the worst french fries, creepy kids toys, swingers with p...

This week on the program, grab your Dou Dou and pour yourself a martini cause we're once again saddling up next to Daniel Craig in his Aston Martin DB5 as we discuss James Bond's ultimate swan song with 2021's No Time to Die . With a troubled production and constant delays, this one has no right to be as good as it is. And while we acknowledge that sometimes things don't necess...

With the Academy Awards less than a month away, we're taking a look at one of the most interesting feckin' films of last year that has a lot to say about grief, friendship, and legacy; it's The Banshees of Inisherin from director Martin McDonagh. While we haven't discussed one of his movies since all the way back in Season 1 with In Bruges , we're back in familiar territor...

We're finally diving into the insane world of Paul Verhoeven with a steamy erotic thriller from the '90s. Of course we're talking about none other than 1992's Basic Instinct ! A greasy Michael Douglas tripping over himself to try and bed a young Sharon Stone; what's not to love? Well, a lot, actually. So uncross your legs and get comfortable cause we're spreading this...

We told you we'd be back, and we weren't lying. That's right; this week we're revisiting the one that started it all: 1984's The Terminator from director James Cameron. If you can even believe it, before he committed himself to the Pandorian dirt, Cameron was a pioneer of auteurism with his incredible ability to make a dollar out of pennies. Does this one stand the test of...

You deserve nice things, and if you're a fan of our show, you've got cosmopolitan taste. This week, we're keeping the 2022 A24 horror train rolling along as we jump back to the '70s with a discussion on Ti West's X . Porn, Fleetwood Mac, old people, murder; this one's got it all! So pour yourself a glass of lemonade and slip into bed with as we talk all things X , inc...

Alex Garland is known for very cerebral, thought-provoking screenplays, and while 2022's Men are both of those things, the film (frustratingly) doesn't seem to commit to anything in particular. That being said, this one has a lot to offer; beautifully haunting atmosphere, a powerhouse performance from Jessie Buckley, and a score that's out of this world. We'll discuss all of th...

Hey...you wanna see Paul Rudd's pubes? Well, you've come to the right podcast! That's right, this week we're taking things back to 2003 with the abhorrent The Shape of Things from director Neil LaBute. Never heard of this one and want to watch it? Good luck; the movie has been lost to time, it seems. But don't worry, dear listener; we're here to tell you all about it,...

This week on the program, we're granting the wishes for those of you who want more schlocky horror movies covered on the show. This time it's none other than 1997's Wishmaster . Candyman, Jason, and Freddy all starring in the same flick? Well...sort of. Tune in as Dustin and Nathan choose their words carefully while they discuss the movie, plus the worst name to yell when you'r...

If we say we have a great episode for you to kick off your 2023 with, you will agree. While you're out there working on your New Year's resolutions, we'll be in the derricks discussing 2007's There Will Be Blood . It's still (unsurprisingly) one of the greatest films of all time and deserves a rewatch. So lace up your old boots and grab your milkshakes cause we've got...

Even though we're officially beyond Christmas, you've still got one last present to open from your friends at The Silver Linings Playlist. What better time than now to discuss the "forbidden" Batman movie? That's right, we're diving into 1992's Batman Returns from Tim Burton. This one's got it all: sleazy Danny DeVito, sexual Michelle Pfeiffer, and a sulking...

We've covered some bad movies on this show during our 6-year run, but nothing has even come close to this. For the first time ever, we are asking - nay, imploring - you all not to watch this movie before hearing our episode (or even afterwards.) 365 Days is pure, unadulterated garbage, and not just in its poor direction and performances; it sets a dangerous precedent. With all that being said...
