Rooted: Real People, Real Issues, Real Growth
No one ever told me living a life of faith would be easy--but they also never told me it would be this...complex either. I bet you can relate. Hi, my name is Shinia, and what I desire to create here is a safe place for us to be honest about the challenges we face as believers. A place where we can share where we've gotten it wrong, and how to get it right. A judgment-free zone for those who are tired of "playing church" and are ready to dig deep into the Word and learn God's truth for themselves. This is a place to grow. Remember: we can't reap what we don't sow. Welcome to Rooted.

Galatians: Look Twice at the Two-Faced Man 02.02.2023 24:34
If you’ve been around on this podcast for a while, then you know this is not the first time we’ve addressed some discrepancies between what God intended for His church and how we, as flawed human beings, have erroneously executed on that mission. The beautiful thing is that there is forgiveness and grace where we are willing to admit, we may have gotten it wrong. However, we have to also admit, wh...
Galatians: All in the Family 26.01.2023 37:09
In an article titled “7 Key Challenges for 21st Century Christianity” the author writes that the 4 key challenge is: Those who intentionally create conflict and discord in the Christian community need to be confronted”. That is exactly what the Apostle Paul does in the first chapter of his letter to the Galatians – Paul writes the early church to warn them against the dangers of false teaching—esp...
Galatians: Relationship Status 19.01.2023 18:46
In what is thought to be his first letter, Paul writes to the church of Galatia, addressing the issue of false teaching—primarily this argument that you can obtain victory through sole human effort. This is an important lesson for us modern day hustlers—the ones who strive and grind, with the mindset that all we need to do is…well more. Work harder. Faster. And we will get better. The problem is t...
Paul: Persecutor to Apostle 12.01.2023 26:24
Last week we began our new study into the New Testament. Because the Apostle is a primary contributor to the text, we thought it imperative that we take some time to understand who Paul was, and his conversion from the person we are first introduced to in the book of Acts, to the passionate preacher we come to know as Paul. This is an introduction that really is better served in Scripture. Lets ju...
Purpose & Perspective 05.01.2023 31:45
As we begin this new year, I feel an overwhelming desire—a nudging, if you will to walk through the New Testament with you. I don’t know where you might find yourself this first week of January 2023—maybe you’re inspired and motivated to accomplish some goals, maybe you’re in an in-between place where you don’t have any specific plans, but you do desire to see some growth, or maybe you’re on the v...
Endgame: Hype in the Hibernation 29.12.2022 40:54
In the winter there are certain animals that hibernate. Hibernation is a way that animals deal with the harshness of winter. They find a safe place and they stay there until the dangers of winter pass. Hibernating animals are so still, and disengaged, --they barely breathe, their body temperature drops, and those who happened upon them would think them dead. What those observers don’t know is that...
Endgame: Culling for the Calling: How to Build Effective Teams 21.12.2022 34:24
In this series we’ve been talking Endgam e—the final stage of a game (for us, the final stage of the year). We unearthed five powerful truths that we could glean from the first two episodes, which include: Here are some truths we’ve taken from our series so far 1. It’s time to come out of hiding—you have no business threshing wheat in a winepress. The world needs you and your gifts. 2. Go in the s...
Endgame: Wheat in the Winepress: Stop Hiding Part 2 15.12.2022 26:48
Last week we started talking Endgame—our determination to finish the year strong with a game plan, a final move, a huge push. In doing so we discussed one of the mindsets that can jeopardize our ability to do just that—hiding. Hiding ourselves and hiding our gifts. Imposter syndrome, feeling inadequate or ill equipped is something everyone deals with at some point in time, especially if you’re cal...
Endgame: Wheat in the Winepress: Stop Hiding Part 1 08.12.2022 19:45
When we refer to 'endgame', we mean the final stage of a game. Now your life is nothing to play with, that's for sure, and I doubt this is your final stage, but we ARE at the END of a year. At the beginning of 2022 we talked about intentionality--understanding that acceleration doesn’t happen by accident (if you haven’ t listened to that episode, I highly recommend you pause and do that now). As w...
Unconventional Gratitude: Conviction & Clarity 01.12.2022 21:10
Can you believe that we are approaching the last month of 2022? As cliché as it sounds, I can’t help but mention that this year has FLOWN by. This is a great opportunity for us to not only close out the Unconventional Gratitude series, but also to gear ourselves up to finish this year STRONG. Look now is not the time to get complacent. With only a few weeks left in the year, we can be tempted to p...
Unconventional Gratitude: Grateful for the Gap 17.11.2022 26:17
Welcome back to a third installment in our unconventional gratitude series. The theme has been to find things that are not obvious on their face that we can still be grateful for. This means when have to really think about it before we choose to express gratitude. Each of these things so far have required some spiritual maturity... the ability to understand that while they always don’t feel good a...
Unconventional Gratitude: The Long Way Around 10.11.2022 27:40
If you’ve ever lived in a big city then you know traffic, delays, detours, they’re all pretty common. Usually traffic is the result of a lot of people trying to go the same route at the same time. It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just an unfortunate syncing of schedules, too few available lanes, and high likelihood that someone is going to crash. Life is a lot like those busy highways. Many of us have a...
Better, Broken, If, Then... 02.11.2022 21:35
Nothing can get you more riled up and irritated than someone trying to tell you about you. Am I right? Nothing about it feels good—you feel exposed, judged, and if it’s true, and something you don’t like about yourself, you may even feel ashamed. All of that rolled up together is a trash fire of condemnation waiting to burn. But what if, you could be fully known? All your secrets laid bare? Weakne...
For What? The Purpose Behind Your Prayers 26.10.2022 24:40
One of the hardest aspects of prayer is that when you pray, you have to trust that God has heard you, and that He will grant your request. We refrain, as believers, from treating God like our own personal genie in a bottle, at least we try to. But we’d be lying if we said that we didn’t want what we’ve so passionately prayed for—especially when we believe He’s the only one that can do make it happ...
The Trump Card 19.10.2022 28:52
In card games, the trump card is the winning card. For example, if you play a trump card during a game of Spades, it means that you take the whole trick - in other words, you'll pick up every card on the table. Any card game in which one card or suit ranks the highest has a trump card, and that card is the one that win s the hand. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I definitely feel like I’m pl...
Scare Tactics: Commons Fears to Overcome When Pursuing Your Purpose 12.10.2022 18:04
In this spooky season, nothing is played on more and used to get our attention than fear. In reality, that’s not too different from our everyday lives. If you’re someone who is pursuing your purpose, you know firsthand that fear loves to rear its ugly head every time you prepare to make a move. Tonight, we are going to talk about how to identify and address common fears associated with walking in...
Don't You Dare Give Up! 06.10.2022 33:59
Are you tired of not seeing your full potential realized because you get easily discouraged and give up. Let me give you more credit than that. In fact, giving up wasn’t your first choice. Mine either. You hung in there. You did your best. But ultimately, the distractions and disappointment became too much, and it just didn’t seem worth it anymore. What do you do when you are confident you’ve been...
Honor & Anger Part VI: Co-parenting Convo 28.09.2022 1:21:10
As a former family law attorney, there was one lesson that I learned very quickly. People don’t play when it comes to their money or their kids. Tonight, on our last episode of Honor & Anger, we are going to be talking about the touchy subject of co-parenting. In this series we’ve dissected Ephesians 6:1-4, where we acknowledged two main truths: children should obey and honor their parents and...
Honor & Anger V: Generational Trauma 21.09.2022 27:08
Generational Trauma. The words themselves evoke a feeling of discomfort. I get it. Who wants to think or talk about the past, especially if it wasn’t pleasant? But as Carl Jung, a Swiss psychologist once said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” We have been created with a calling and purpose, especially as parents, and we cannot allow a...
Honor & Anger Part IV: Vulnerability and Emotional Intelligence 14.09.2022 24:23
Here at Rooted, we focus on practical application of God’s Word to our lives—believing that in doing so we can be transformed into not only who God created us to be but who we truly desire to be. I don’t know about you, but a real-life area where most people admittedly need help is with parenting. God cares about us as parents and He especially cares about HOW we parent. This series Honor and Ange...
Honor & Anger Part III: Can We Talk For a Minute? Tips for Effective Communication 31.08.2022 31:40
In part three of our series Honor & Anger we address communication between parents and their children. Communication is critical and key if we are going to fully invest in and relate with our children. Communicating well helps to build trust, impart language and life skills, and overall improves the family dynamic and environment. Your words have power. Especially when directed at your childre...
Honor & Anger Part II: Love Languages of Children 25.08.2022 29:08
Many of us are familiar with the five love languages as it relates to ourselves or marital relationships, but did you know that these little humans that we call children also have love languages? Tonight, we are going to discuss the importance of communicating love to our children in a way that resonates with who they are as individuals. We will be challenged to think outside the box and to be int...
Honor & Anger: Practical Tips for Effective Parenting 17.08.2022 22:14
Two days ago, I scrolled through my timeline on Facebook looking at all the wonderful pictures of children heading back to school (I live in Texas by the way, so school began for us on August 15th). I imagined the nerves of the little ones who were starting school for the first time, or the excitement of the ones heading into their senior year of high school. I thought about the parents who may sh...
Agenda: God's Plan 10.08.2022 11:56
We all have an agenda – a preferred path, motivated by the things we want, when we want them and how we want them. That’s human. That’s natural. But we are called to be supernatural. What does this look like in real time? How can we set aside our agenda to join God in His kingdom agenda? We’ll talk about it tonight on Agenda: God’s Plan.
Watch Your Mouth! 03.08.2022 21:49
No one has greater access and opportunity to influence you, than you. You are with you at all times, in all places and in every way. You know your insecurities better than anyone, and you know the soft, vulnerable places where you struggle. What have you been telling you about you? What do you know to be true? And if you desire to think, believe, and ultimately act in a different way, where do you...
