James poses a rhetorical challenge. "You say you have faith. Fine, show me your faith without showing me your works. But I'll show you my faith by my works." God can see our hearts. But men can only see the difference that Christ makes in our lives as He affects a change in our behavior and demeanor. Our actions become the barometer that shows whether our faith is real. To illustrate this, two peo...

Pastor Robert Rohlin explains why Martin Luther was mistaken in his view that James should not be in the Scriptural canon. Paul and James both refer to works but refer to 2 different things. Paul refers to "works of the law" meaning the keeping of Jewish laws. James refers to "works of mercy and righteousness" which naturally occur in our lives if we have a true saving faith in Jesus Christ. Paul...

James makes it clear in his epistle that real faith cannot coexist with favoritism or racism. Both are contradictory to the very nature of the Gospel message. James chides his readers for sometimes showing favor to a rich person over a poor person. The reality is that Jesus didn't even have a place to lay his head at night. He would have identified better with the poor person in his earthly minist...

Pastor Robert Rohlin in a previous message explained 3 key concepts to overcoming temptation. In this message he explains the importance of the 4th concept -- learning how to rest in the Word of God. This includes learning how to meditate on God's Word and why fasting is not just a religious exercise but an excellent tool to make wise decisions. Pastor Robert Rohlin is the executive pastor at Firs...

Pastor Dale Thornton continues his series on God's Salvation Package, this time focusing on the fact that Christ was the only route to our becoming reconciled to the Father. Pastor Dale Thornton is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Las Colinas in Irving, Texas --...

On this Resurrection Sunday (Easter), Pastor Robert Rohlin explains how the resurrection not only gives us assurance of our eternal salvation in Christ in the future, but it gives us victory over temptation here and now! There is a precise process in Scripture that you can apply to overcome temptation and it is explained in James 1:12-18. This is a practical message that wise people will hear with...

We are glad to have the pastor speaking again. In the New Testament, "crowns" are often used to refer to our eternal rewards that in heaven become the offerings the saints lay down before the throne of God as an act of worship. In this passage, James mentiones one of the 4 crowns defined in the New Testament -- the crown of life. That crown is related to our response to trials and testings. There are 3 essential requirements for us to past the...

This sermon examines James 1:9–12 and explains how trials test and refine faith, expose the fleeting nature of earthly wealth, and culminate in the promised crown of life for those who love God. It sets out three practical responses: ask God for wisdom in faith; reframe suffering as purposeful discipline that increases hope; and persevere in love until approval. A Christian should listen if seekin...

James has just told us that we need to intentionally rejoice during times of trials and testings. But that is not easy. In fact, the only way we can do that is if we have wisdom which is the ability to see our circumstances from God's point of view. Pastor Robert Rohlin talks about how praying for wisdom has become a daily practice for the last 40 years. Wisdom enables us to more clearly see the b...

Pastor Robert Rohlin celebrates his 40th anniversary of his ordination as a pastor by dealing with plumbing problems, computer problems, and logistical issues. Sometimes life becomes a trial! So it is appropriate that this message deals with the first command of the book of James -- "Count it supreme joy when you have trials!" What? How can you do that? What good comes of trials? These questions a...

Pastor Robert Rohlin begins a new verse-by-verse exposition series of the epistle of James. The author was the half-brother of Jesus Christ and the head of the Jerusalem church. This book was written between A.D. 45-48 and is the earliest book of the New Testament. While Paul taught that before God, salvation is by faith in Christ alone, James taught that before men, our salvation is only evident...

In this fifth and final message from the book of Habakkuk, the prophet gives reasons why he will choose to praise the Lord regardless of how bad things get for his nation or his personal life. He resolves to praise God because God is always worthy of praise even when we do not understand why He allows certain things to come into our lives. Why did a loved one die? Why is one of your children autis...

In this fourth message from Habakkuk, the prophet ceases his objections to God's actions or inaction. Now he simply offers 2 petitions: (1) God, show your power and glory quickly. (2) God, remember to show mercy to those who repent. This begins one of the most beautiful passages on praise in Scripture. And there is also some interesting information on Michelangelo's statue of Moses. Pastor Robert...

In this third message from Habakkuk, there is a poetic series of 5 "woes". Each of the first 4 woes has a reason stated for the woe maked with "for." In the middle of these woes is a passage asserting God's glory. The woes also end with a reminder that God is in His temple. Essentially, even in times when God is judging a nation, God is in the midst of the judgment and offering hope to believers t...
